On June 26th 2012 NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly formally opened the fifth season of the NYPD Cricket series. The twelve team tournament opened at Gateway oval with Daredevils taking on Lycans. Batting first Daredevils got a lively start from Bilal Khan (23). Lycans would keep their opponents in check with three quick wickets. US National Youth player Prasanth Nair batting at four consolidated as his mates played cameos around him. Nair’s confidence grew as he began to take the attack to the Lycans. Nair played straight and was rewards for his accurate stroke play dishing out eight sixes as he remain unbeaten on 76 as Daredevils closed on 179 off their allotted 20 overs. Lycans were not up to the fight as they foiled for 53 as Daredevils and Nair set the tone for an exciting tournament.
On Thursday, at Kissena, Kryptonites piled up 208/3 against Knight Rider, with Antu scoring 71, Ikram 50, and Mithun 36. Deoram Puran, Tuhin Ahmed, and Sultan Zain had a wicket each. in reply Knight Riders feared slight better that Lycans but it did no justice to their cause as they could only get to 81. Only Tuhin Ahmed 31 gave any resistance as Patwary and Hossain had three wickets each.
Superstars batted first against Night Owls, with Clifton Hamilton (23) anchoring the top order as wickets fell around him. Hamilton’s efforts were more than sufficient as Dino Choweenam (37) and R. Islam (36) accelerated towards the end of the innings. Superstars 162 all out with two deliveries wasted. Captain Sayed had two wickets and Khan picked two for the Owls.
For Night Owl Sayed returned with an aggressive cameo to follow up his efforts with the ball. But it was not enough as the Superstar bowling kept the run rate in check with wickets falling at regular interval. Anwar Komal, Anwar Hussain, Wazid Shaw and Choweenam all picked up two wickets each.
Dragons score 135/6 and defended well against Punjab who fell 15 runs short. Play continues on Tuesday July 3rd at Gateway Oval and Thursday at Kissena.
