Club regroups for EACA T20 Blitz

After coming up very short in the Eastern American Cricket Association’s Power40 Zone Division “A” championship final, Atlantis Cricket Club bounced back last weekend to win it’s first two matches in the league’s 2012 T20 Blitz tournament at Heckscher State Park.

With several players unavailable for the start of the EACA’s phase two 2012 tournament, Atlantis fielded two players short in both matches; starting against Phantom Cricket Club shortly before Noon and Arsenal later in the afternoon. Winning the toss against Phantom and electing to bat, Atlantis quickly got up to Mach speed striking 28x4s and 12x6s in their tally of 262 in 20 overs, mainly off the blade of opener Henderson Blades, who struck 145 not out (19x4s, 9x6s) and Alex Amsterdam who narrowly missed a half-century striking 2x4s and 1×6 in his knock of 47.
Atlantis lost three wickets along the way; Ryan Sukhdeo, 23 (2x4s, 1×6), Nicholas Standford, 6, and Alex Amsterdam, 47. The wickets were shared by three Phantom bowlers, F. Baloch 4-0-34-1, S. Regmi 4-0-61-1 and H. Naseer 4-0-29-1. Extras contributed 40, while the remaining two Phantom bowlers A. Bangash 0 for 59 off 4 overs and S. Murtaza 0 for 49 off 4 overs, chipped in with sizable contributions.
In response, Phantom disappeared for a paltry 77 all out in 20 overs, with the top three batsmen Atif Bangash, 19, Shakeeb Murtaza, 13, and Vignesh Murali, 10, being the only ones along with Extras, 17, to record double-digits. Bowling for Atlantis: Skipper Prashanth Nair captured 3 for 13 off 4 overs. Alex Amsterdam 4-0-15-2 along with Hugh Craig one for 3 off 2 overs and Keon Lake one for 9 off 4 overs were responsible for the remaining wickets, as Phantom fielded only nine pilots.

Atlantis robs Arsenal with 10 soldiers
Atlantis, having posted 262 in the first match, appeared to not have enough arrows left in its quiver to shoot down Arsenal Cricket Club, posting only 136 for 7 in the second match of the day, which was reduced to 17 overs.

The EACA Power40 Zone Division “A” runners-up Atlantis got off to a painful start losing its first four wickets for less than 50 runs, with three of those wickets falling with the score stuck at 44. Top scorers in Atlantis’ 136 were Alex Amsterdam, 55 not out off 35 balls (4x6s, 4x4s), Keon Lake, 36 off 26 balls (3x6s, 2x4s) in the opening slot and opening his account with a massive six over long-on, Henderson Blades batting down the order recorded a patient 17, while Kavishwar Bridgepaul scored an even 12 via two sixes. Extras appeared 13 times.
The Atlantis wickets fell at 9, 44, 44, 44, 71, 102 and 103. Bowling for Arsenal; Maqsood Alam was the pick of the crop with 3-0-36-3, with Rehan Shahid, Shaveed Zaman and Lisan Chowdury each grabbing one wicket for 12, 21 and 25 respectively.
Arsenal was scuttled out for a mere 90 in 16 overs, with Prashanth Nair grabbing 4 for 15 off 4 overs with his right-arm leg-breaks, a feature within his arsenal for some time now. Although the Arsenal batsmen showed remarkable poise at times, the Atlantis bowlers were able to focus, contain the batsmen and keep the victory within sight, while defending one of their lowest totals for the 2012 season.
Alvi Ali top scored for Arsenal with 26 off 28 deliveries (2x4s), with contributions of 14 not out and 11 coming off the bats of Ayyas Chaudry and Ibrar Ahmad respectively. Extras contributed 15, as Atlantis robbed the Arsenal of the victory by 46 runs.

The Arsenal wickets fell at 33, 37, 47, 57, 59, 73, 80 and 86. In addition to P. Nair’s 4 for 15, Hugh Craig had 2 for 17 off 3 overs, Alex Amsterdam 2 for 22 off 4 overs and Keon Lake 1 for 16 off 2 overs.
And so the day ended on a very positive note for a rebounding Atlantis that’s hoping to make it to the semi-finals in the EACA’s T20 Blitz. This Sunday, the 2-0 Atlantis will clash with the 1-1 LIUCC at Brentwood, NY. Match time is 1:00 pm.
