MMZ Top Liberty

Water logged conditions inhibited run scoring

A soggy Lido Beach pitch combined with a poor batting display from Liberty Sports Club (LSC) and a spirited bowling effort from opposition Meten Meer Zorg Cricket Club (MMZ) resulted in #TheBlueNation being defeated for the second time in 2014. Shines Beepat picked up 4 wickets for 8 runs to lead the MMZ attack in defending 125 runs in a game reduced to 30 overs.

cricket let's play usaThe day began with both teams working together to make the game possible. After about an hour of work the pitch was cleared of water and the bowler’s run up was dried up to facilitate start of play. The game was reduced to 30 overs when play started at 2:30 PM.  LSC won the toss and immediately sent in the opposition looking to take advantage of the conditions.

Imtiaz Hassan struck first up with two wickets in two balls in his second over. This brought US National batsman Andy Mohammed to the crease to join Sumon Bari. The pair would consolidate to add 45 before Mohammed (25) held out to Hassan off of Altaaf Habibulla’s 3rd ball in the innings. Habibulla would pick up two more wickets; Andre Persaud for 10 and Beepat for 20, while the MMZ innings edged along.

Eighteen year old Javed Shakoor was introduced and bowled Zaaid Majeed and Ajaz Asgarally for two runs a piece. Trinson Carmichael then cleaned up the two remaining wickets to add to Bari’s (21) wicket he picked up earlier off of a ballerina-like leaping catch by Bose Persaud.

BI_Sports_Logo_T20-1Hassan finished with 2 for 34 off 6 overs, Carmichael and Habibulla three wickets and a maiden each for 14 and 20 runs respectively. Shakoor bowled his 5 overs for 26 with two wickets while Terrence Madramootoo bowled 5 overs for 26 runs. Gangaram Lochan added a crucial 22 not out batting at number 8 for MMZ before they were bowled out for 125 in the 29th over.

Confident of chasing what appeared to be a par total for the conditions was clouded with doubt when Beepat got one to roll along the surface to bowl Francis Mendonca and another to hold up to resulting to a mistimed return catch from Dilly Khillawan. This left LSC 2 for 2 after the first over. Carmichael picked off 3 boundaries before he lost his skiper Danesh Deonarain for 2, again to one which held up from Beepat.

The hard hitting Madramootoo only managed 1 before he was cleaned up looking to go big, reducing the chase to 18 for 4 in the ninth over. Imtiaz Hassan joined Carmichael and the pair added 22 before Lochan milked some extra turn to go pass Carmichael’s edge to bowl him. Hassan, looking to take control of the match, stroked some handsome blows for a game high 30. His enterprising knock would fall short when a 31 runs partnership between Habibulla and him ended with Hassan holding out to long on. Habibulla who chipped in with 18 was run out shortly after to knock the wind out of the chase.

With a climbing run rate and the lost of too many wickets MMZ tightened the pressure on LSC resulting in Bose Persaud being bowled for 9, Jason Rooney run out for 5 and Tooneshwar Kristona bowled for 2. This left Javed Shakoor not out on 1 when the team was bowled out for 90 in the 28th over.

The loss leaves LSC at 8-2 with three challenging matches in  Division A of the EACA Power40 left. MMZ, enjoying a late spurt, improves to 7-3 and will be looking to continue their winning run.

Westbury Whip Cosmos

Metropolitan Cricket League: All To Play For With One Round To Go

By Sham Ali

Cosmos' Keith Edie has been in good nick this season as he score 52 in a losing effort against Westbury #NYMDCA # Metro League

Cosmos’ Keith Edie has been in good nick this season as he score 52 in a losing effort against Westbury #NYMDCA # Metro League

(Celebrating 31st Anniversary):- It was a near perfect day for cricket and an almost perfect one for Westbury as Cosmos suffered a crushing 7-wicket defeat at the hands of Westbury at Westbury High School last Sunday (7/27/2014). This opposition appeared intent and determined as if they were fighting someone else’s battle, in contrast Cosmos did not do much to counter-attack and as a result had to absorb a second defeat for the season.

Westbury won the toss and decided to field under overcast skies that eventually gave way to bright sunshine. It was a decision that fitted squarely into the Cosmos plan, however, on this occasion; Cosmos were not only guilty of an overly cautious approach but appeared flat-footed against a relatively run-of-the-mill bowling attack. Opening batsman Hemchand Hardeo (8) began his inning with a few crisp drives that did not penetrate the field and was the first to go when he steered one softly to second slip. Tegana Mckenzie walked in earlier than usual and began his inning with mixed aggression before he fell to a smart piece of stumping by Kevin Baugh from wide down the leg side, and when Faisal Taj (21), after being watchful in the early overs, held out at deep mid-on where Javein Thomas took a well judged catch off Ballister McLeish the Cosmos scorecard read 71 for 3.

However, at 102 for 4, the innings was poised for a push towards the 200 runs mark, unfortunately, it was at that point too that the Cosmos innings took a very different route and fell apart. Sohan Dass was stroking the ball cleanly until his in decision on a long-hop ballooned to extra cover, and immediately thereafter David Mohamed cautiously sliced another short ball to slip. With the fall of Dass and Mohamed in quick succession Cosmos innings then wobbled within the next 10 runs as the opposition ceased the opportunity to go for the jugular.

BI_Sports_Logo_T20-1Only Keith Edie stood in defiance while looking for a partner to halt the opposition’s charge, but no one stayed around long enough as wickets tumble around him. Edie eventually went for a patient 52 runs when he nicked one to the wicket-keeper and the Cosmos tail wagged when Cyril Choy popped a simple catch to mid-off, Rasheem James played inside one that turned on him and took his stump, Ralston Levy then pulled a short ball to the boundary and in the process stepped onto his stumps. It was an eventful turnaround within five overs that resulted in a dramatic collapsed of Cosmos to 113 for 9 in the 31st over, and with that the uncertainty of the day which began under cloudy skies left Cosmos dry of runs. Ricky Kissoon and Sajib Salam played within their ability to with a ninth wicket partnership of 16 runs by the end of the allotted 37 overs.

Westbury had a few things to do and one of those was to knock off the required 130 runs needed for victory in a hurry, and Cosmos needed to make a few early inroads into the opposition line-up if they were to make a ‘match’ of a small target. D. Ferguson and J. Thomas were solid and did not offer any half a chances as they began their reply in an aggressive mood. They raced to a 57-run partnership by the 10th over during which time Cosmos searched for a breakthrough between four bowling changes. The breakthrough finally came when Levy bowled Ferguson (26) around his legs with the score on 61, however, by that time the Westbury’s inning was well course. Bartington Bartley and Thomas then stepped on the peddle with some excellent running between the wicket to post an aggressive 52-runs partnership before Thomas (41) was run out going for a third run. Levy then trapped leg before Bartley who had raced to a purposeful 48 runs. At 113 for 3 by the 17th over, the end result in this match-up was academic as K. Baugh and D. Campbell ensured a comfortable victory.

Cosmos will play Sheffield at Floyd Bennett next Sunday 3rd August.

Liberty SC Edge Past Falcons In Low-scoring Affair

Khilawan, Carmichael Keep LSC Atop

Dilly & TrinsonDilly Khilawan stroked a patient 62 before Trinson Carmichael scalped 4 for 16 to ensure a 47 runs Liberty Sports Club (LSC) victory over Falcons Cricket Club (FCC). On a humid day in Bronx’s Van Courtland Park the GMA Enterprise sponsored LSC posted 179 for 9 batting first then returned to defend the chase, bowling out FCC for 132 in the 33rd over.

On a heavy outfield where value for proper cricket shots was hard to come by The Blue Nation inched along at 46 without loss by the 12th over before Francis Mendonca (18) was left stranded after being called through for a single. Mendonca’s opening partner, Khilawan, would remain steady at the other end as he partnered Carmichael for another 42 runs before another unfortunate run out. Khilawan drove straight back and the outstretch hand of the bowler glanced the ball unto the non-striker’s stumps to find Carmichael (17) short of his ground.

Khilawan kept on going in weather and playing conditions which made batting hard work. The right-hander struck three fours (3×4’s) and two sixes (2×6’s) in his 29 over innings. Skipper, Danesh Deonarain (14) and Terrence Madramootoo (1) had short stays at the crease with Khillawan before he too fell via the run out route.

cricket let's play usaAltaaf Habibulla came in at number six (6) and batted well with the remaining batsmen. The diminutive left-hander carved out an unbeaten 34 hitting one four (1×4’s) and a six (1×6’s). Vijendra Singh (9) and Bose Persaud (13) shared a 12 and 45 runs partnership respectively with Habibulla to boost the total. Jason Rooney and Javed Shakoor fell quickly in the final over in an effort to get late runs.

Sudesh Hemnauth picked up 2 wickets for 27 while Brahma Sanichar, Manoj Shamsundar and Akshay Homraj took a wicket each for Falcons CC before they limited LSC to 179 for 9.

Having only 37 overs to chase the total due to a late start Falcons started briskly taking 23 off the first three (3) overs. Joining in what seem to be the order of the day after LSC suffered 4 run outs, Falcons lost their first wicket when Carmichael and Mendonca combined to catch Mohammed Zaheid (9) short of his ground.  Tooneshwar Kristona would strike two (2) overs later to remove Manoj Shamsundar for 16.

Jagdat “Bear” Hardeen had a brief stay at the crease before he cut Carmichael straight to Habibulla at backward point for 11. Denesh Harriprashad (24) and Zulfikar Ali (18) shared a 38 runs partnership before Vijendra Singh trapped Ali leg before. Singh would strike once again in his next over.

Eighteen year old Javed Shakoor meanwhile was enjoying a favorable bowling debut for LSC in Eastern American Cricket Association (EACA) Power 40. Having sent down 3 overs for 13 runs during the Harriprashad and Ali partnership, Shakoor bowled Harriprashad in his fourth over after which he completed a maiden. The young right arm orthodox would go on to finish his 8 over spell with the a wicket maiden for 31 runs.

Imran Khan (34) struck a few lusty blows to keep the Falcons camp hopeful but once introduced back into the attack, Carmichael wrapped up the victory for LSC. The Falcons CC inning ended at 132 all out in the 33rd over. Carmichael ended with figures of 6.2 overs 4 wickets for 16 runs.

The LSC bowling was rounded off by Vijendra Singh 2 wickets for 26 runs off  5 overs and Kristona 1 wicket for 13 runs while Habibulla and Madramootoo bowled economically for 25 off 5 overs and 19 off 6 overs respectively but were unlucky to not pick up a wicket.

The win takes #TheBlueNation to 8-1 in the EACA Power40 tournament as the Division 1  tournament continues.
