Windies Geared Up Against Struggling Aussies

by Dyon Ravello

West Indies were not winners on Tuesday against the PM’s XI but there were notable highlights heading into Friday’s first One Dayer against the struggling Australians. Kieran Powell and Ramnaresh Sarwan were both among the runs with 92 and 63 respectively recovering from their abysmal showing during the recently completed Caribbean T20. Andre Russell scored a late innings half century, out performing the other three all-rounders in the line-up.

Can Sarwan reignite his flair Down Under?

Can Sarwan reignite his flair Down Under?

On a day when the slower variety proved more useful than the quicks. Tino Best, skipper Darren Sammy and Dwayne Bravo all scored 70 plus with the ball in hand. Sunil Narine had a miserly return with ten over for 2/32, as Kieron Pollard was the next best with the ball with figures of 7/0/37/2. The Windies will have some cause for concern aa the middle order collapse after a promising start from the top order. The quartet of the Bravo brothers, Pollard and Sammy contributed 29 in between the top three’s 189 and Russell’s 54.

With Chris Gayle rested for the tour opener and Kemar Roach returning at Perth, Gibson’s charges will be boosted by these two leaders in their respective departments. Gayle’s presences at the top will ease doubts regarding Powell’s ability to take his place on Friday. Johnson Charles had 34 against the PM and will be a capable contender in the event that Powell is unable to recover.  Roach returns to the pacy tracks of Down Under where he had gained his reputation by wrestling Ricky Ponting. Kemar will be geared to repeat similar performances on this tour as well.

As for those playing catch up, game one is just three days away. With a strong bench there is no room for complacent, especially with an objective to climb the rankings. As the home team has struggled in their recent series, the visitors will look to pounce on the opportunity. Hopefully the over-confidence of Bangladesh does to take reign. To add to the motives for success, West Indies may want to play with Marlon on the mind. The Marlon Samuels of the T20 World Cup and the tour of the Bengal region in late 2012.

VelloCricket predictions for the starting lineup on Friday: Chris Gayle, Kieran Powell/Johnson Charles, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Darren Bravo, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Darren Sammy, Devon Thomas, Sunil Narine, and Kemar Roach.

ACF Releases Constitution Draft

The American Cricket Federation (ACF) announced today that the organization’s draft constitution was ready to be issued for public comment.

Announcing the time table for adoption, Prof. Gangaram Singh, the Coordinator of the Constitution Committee, said: “It has long been our goal to provide US Cricket with a selfless platform that will unite all cricket constituencies through a universal appeal that can accelerate US cricket development. In addition to the months of internal committee deliberations of several experts and experienced cricket administrators, and unanimous adoption by the Steering Committee, we determined that the draft should also be made available for comment and input to the wider cricket community for whose benefit it was designed”.  See “Constitution” below.

About the American Cricket Federation

ACF Logo(1)(1)The ACF was founded by a large group of experienced cricketers and administrators united in the belief that US cricket needed and deserved a new direction. Incorporated on October 9, 2012, it is currently managed by a Steering Committee whose members and biographies may be found on the ACF website at www.cricketfederation.org

With a highly successful intra-regional league tournament already staged on turf wickets in California, another early goal was to define governing principles and a vision to translate into a Constitution that would be attractive to the vast majority of US cricketers and stakeholders. Now in fruition, the next goal is to convert that attraction and benefit into a membership electorate that will have the voice in electing and setting the agenda for a truly representative national body. The Steering Committee will dissolve concurrent with the earliest possible election.

The ACF promises a new path forward for cricket in the US and the constitution is an important expression of that intent.  In the document, ACF embraces the core tenets of American ideology – transparency, equal opportunity, and accountability. The constitution also stays true to the ethics and principles of transparency, inclusiveness and fairness.

The Constitution – A Path Forward

In preparing the draft, the Constitution committee studied several important documents including the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act, Lord Woolfe’s independent governance review of the ICC and best practices followed by the national governing bodies of other sports. Key features are:

Broad participation: The first guiding principle of ACF is to widen its membership and partner with them in promoting cricket. This inclusive spirit mandates the provision for several classes of members and also recognizes specific designations such as Women, College, Youth and Softball cricketers, besides Clubs and Development Administrators in order to provide them with a voice.  While the constitution recognizes the importance of the leagues, the document also contemplates representation for each of these categories thereby allowing players, smaller organizations and individuals involved with development the ability to shape the agenda for the board. Eligibility requirements for each category are also clearly laid out in the document.

Accountability
: ACF embraces the concept of a senate and house of representatives to ensure a system of checks and balances.  The eleven member ACF Board, which will have ultimate authority over the business and policies of the ACF, will also ensure cross-geographic representation.  The Advisory and Judicial Committee, which will have direct representation from men and women players, clubs, leagues, colleges, youth and development leaders, will discuss matters to be taken to the Board and also serve as the dispute resolution body.

Fair representation and term limits
: The ACF Board will comprise six directors from the league zones, four directors at-large, and one independent director.   Of the four at-large directors, one will be directly elected by softball leagues and three will be elected by player and club members. The presence of an independent member is consistent with Lord Woolfe’s report and corporate best practices. To ensure continuity, the members will have staggered terms. Significantly, members of the board may not serve more than two successive terms.  The Advisory and Judicial Committee will comprise eleven members. Men and Women’s clubs and players shall each provide two representatives, as well as Development Administrators, and College/Youth cricketers.   The committee will also have direct representation from hardball and softball cricket leagues.  The Advisory and Judicial Committee will have a two-term limit with each term lasting 4 years.

In the coming days, the draft constitution will be distributed to signatory leagues and posted on the ACF website for all well-wishers of cricket in the US to review and provide their input.  ACF expects formal adoption of the constitution in February and will shortly open website access to accommodate applications for general membership.

In order to meet this expectation, the Steering Committee has set an initial comment period of 10 days, which will close on January 31, 2013. The Constitution committee will consider the comments received during this period. Following this, the committee will produce FAQs and interpretative guidance to address the most common concerns as well as make any revisions deemed appropriate. Nominate Your League and Grounds As the Best In the Land

Dear US cricket lover,

Hope you are having a good new year.  As you are aware, DreamCricket.com is celebrating the new year with the third edition of the New Inning Foundation USA Cricket Awards.

There are still a few hours left to submit your league or cricket program as well as a cricket ground in your area for nomination in DreamCricket.com’s 2012 New Inning Foundation USA Cricket Awards to be decided by a fan vote later this month.   We’ve received 9 nominations so far for best league/program and over a dozen grounds have been nominated.

Whether your league has 10 teams or 30 teams, 100 players or 300 players, is played across one city or encompasses several cities or even states, here is your chance to present your league and the grounds in your league for prestigious recognition through the audience of USA’s cricket community at DreamCricket.com. If you’d like your league to be nominated to be included in the fan vote by DreamCricket users to determine the winner, please respond with an email to content@dreamcricket.com by midnight on January 10 with your league’s name and a sentence or two on why your cricket league is the Best League in America. Separate submissions may be made for any ground that you think should be recognized as the Best Ground in America.  We will follow up with a small list of questions in connection with all nominated leagues or grounds and present the information to US cricket fans for a vote.

After the completion of the fan vote to determine the winners in each category, the winners will have a feature article written about them on DreamCricket.com and a plaque will be sent to the winners.
