Windies Extends Contract Pool: Team Predictor

by Dyon Ravello

With the West Indies fielding a least two different squads in the limited overs competitions and Test, the WICB has seen it necessary to extend its contracted list from 15 to 20 players. A year earlier the IPL contingent of Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo and Keiron Pollard refused to accept contracts with the WICB, which allowed for more flexibility in being available for the various T20 fanfares around the global. Others who were refused contracts included Lendl Simmons, Denesh Ramdin, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Sulieman Benn, Nikita Miller, Brendan Nash and Devon Smith. The 2011-2012 Contract List:

Grade A: Shivnarine Chanderpaul
Grade B: Fidel Edwards, Ravi Rampaul, Darren Sammy and Marlon Samuels.
Grade C: Adrian Barath, Carlton Baugh, Devendra Bishoo, Darren Bravo, Kirk Edwards, Kemar Roach, Andre Russell and Shane Shillingford.
Development Contracts: Kraigg Brathwaite, Shannon Gabriel, Nelon Pascal, Kieran Powell and Devon Thomas.

With the West Indian cricket scope on the rise in the past year, some of the names retained last season may even benefit from contract upgrades.  Looking at the now expired contracts of those listed in Grade A and B should be renewed without much hesitation. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, remain the Caribbean’s premier Test batsman surely deserves another Grade A package. Captain Darren Sammy and Marlon Samuels have exceeded expectation this term. Short forecast, predict that Darren Sammy’s two year tenure at the helm of the West Indian unit will continue for the foreseeable future, especially so in the limited over versions.

Ravi Rampaul, and Fidel Edwards have remained vital parts of the bowling unit and the current Grade B package would be sufficient, no surprised if they both receive upgrades. In the bowling department Kemar Roach has been lethal in Test and like Shiv a Grade A pack is deserved. Tino Best should come in a basis Grade C but his return to international cricket could yield him a Grade B offer. Like the quicks off spinner Shane Shillingford has earned his wage in the last term and should be on cards for the coming season. Shannon Gabriel was rewarded with a developmental contract, for which he repaid the selectors on his brief tour of England. Gabriel, once fit is set to form part of a very robust bowling attack and he too would be in line for an upgrade.

In the batting department, Darren Bravo should maintain his current offer as he continues to shines as a long-term prospect in the middle order. Likewise Adrian Barath may benefit from the lack of competition for the opening positions and retain his offer. Developmental contracts received by Andre Russell, Keiran Powell and Devon Thomas, are likely to improve as their performances has been more than ample to warrant at minimum to Grade C. Denesh Ramdin, Narsingh Deonarine and Assad Fudadin will be keen once an offer is presented after solid performances in 2012. So too Limited overs specialist, Johnson Charles and Lendl Simmons will be keen to sign on the dotted line.

Kemar Roach, a true leader in West Indian Cricket

T20 Gladiators

The unknowns, a la Gayle, Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Sunil Narine and to a less extent Dwayne Smith will all be keen to remain available for the continued T20 carnivals across the globe. Gayle and Narine have been key players in all three formats and for them to accept retainers will give the side more stability throughout the next season. As much as the IPL NOC’s have disrupted the stability of the team, it has made way for a number of players to come to the fore, most of whom have repaid the trust placed in them by the selectors.

As for Pollard, and the Dwayne Reigns their international selections have been limited to the shorter versions, and this has not adversely affect their commitment to both country and franchise. Dwayne Bravo would be under most consideration for his country as he is a proven campaigner in all formats as well as captaincy material. Pollard had matured into a sturdy limited overs bat but a place in the Test Arena has been most elusive.

The Blackist

Ramnaresh Sarwan has recovered his form at a time when his country could have use his stability at number three. However, Sars’ return was enjoyed most not my his test mates rather by his county following 0n the English first class circuit. Sarwan who recently won a his arbitration case against the WICB remains on the coaches blacklist, at least for the interim. Brendan Nash is another professional on the County circuit at peak form, repaying Jimmy Adams’ belief in him at Kent. Like Sars, Nash does not seem to feature in Gibson’s short or long-term forecast. A pace named Jerome Taylor rose to lead the fledgling attack, has now fade from grace. So much that he has not even feature for his native Jamaica in WICB competitions. From the backlist candidates most likely to return are Sarwan and Nash.

Development

WICB have already received dividends from the investments made on the players listed as development retainers and more so from the Sagicor High Performance Center. From the A team Delorn Johnson and Verasammy Permaul have excelled strengthening the reserve pool. From the currently HPC camp Sheldon Cottrell, has been a consistent fast bowler since making his debut for Jamaica. Other names worthy of mention include; Kevin Mc Clean, Jonathan Carter, Kraigg Brathwaite, and Kirk Edwards.

American Cricket Forum At Its Best: Physical Fitness

Dear American Cricketers, Aged 20’s 30’s 40’s and younger, this is what Peter Della Penna, ( DC) had to say about our national team’s fitness:

“Rating D: The team looked very tired batting second after having to field for 50 overs against Denmark and Nepal. The heat In Malaysia was draining on every team, but a team’s strategy can’t be based on winning the toss to avoid having to field first.

USA looked particularly woeful on the second day of back-to-back matches. The team had a 3-0 record playing after an off day and a 0-3 record playing for the second time in two days. The World Cricket League format is not new to USA, so there shouldn’t have been any surprises about what was expected in regards to the fitness requirements to make it through six matches in eight days.

Just about the only players who looked like the heat didn’t affect them were Nadkarni and Allen. Otherwise, most players struggled whether it was batting, bowling or fielding. USA’s 23 missed chances in the field can be partly attributed to the poor fitness standards. The playing field was level for all teams with regards to the heat, but it looked like USA felt the effects more than most.

Top of Form

S. Hossein Most of the guys has fulltime jobs, and in some states there is only a few months of warm weather

Vello Cricket tho. I agree with you that’s an excuse especially if you aspire to play at the international level

L. Hoops S. Hussein, unfortunately I don’t agree that those excuses are valid anymore. If you want it, you have to make sure you stay fit even if it means jogging on a tread mill during the winter. Players, especially in NY have basically reduced the game to batting and bowling. Once those mediocre standards are tested at a higher level, players become expose and their performances decline.

Vello Cricket well said there Hoops those excuses may work up until U-19 and especially at club level, but to move from ICC Div 3 to Div 2 it will require more commitment and effort than in Div 4

S. Hossein Yep that’s what I am getting to, we need an infrastructure to nurture players, have them play all year round if possible, have camps in sunshine states. And of course it’s up to the players to stay fit at all times.

Vello Cricket well said S. Hossein, sunshine states would be ideal, I am sure we can develop winter programs, sponsors welcome

S. Hossein Until we have players constantly playing 50 matches we will take longer to get better

Vello Cricket Yes your quite right, even Two Day, TWO INNING matches

A. Mohammed I think the USA team is doing well to just go out there a play against teams who are training day in day out. USA performs on just raw talent and we do and average job, just imagine if we trained everyday like the rest of the world.

S. Hossein Nobody said you guys do not do a good job, you guys made us proud; we are just discussing ideas that could further nurture and improve our performance

A Mohammed Our fitness is compared to teams who are training every day. There is “cricket fitness” and then there is “physical fitness”. I think peter should have done a separate grade for each. “Physical fitness” I think we can go head to head with any team.

L. Hoops S. Hossein is right A. Mohammed but you going to have to explain the fitness to me.

S. Hossein A. Mohammed is right, but it’s called “match fitness”

A. Mohammed I can go to the gym every day and become physically fit but if I do not go on a cricket field and do the necessary training such as catching, fielding, bating, bowling that means I am not “match fit”.

L. Hoops You can go to the gym and become physically fit. Going to the cricket field to practice uses your physical fitness to enhance your talents not your cricket fitness. I could be the worst player batting, catching and bowling, however I go out and become super fit; does that mean that now I am fit? but my cricket gets better?

A. Mohammed your cricket will get better if you practice cricket, it all comes down do USA players are not practicing enough? Enough for international scale at least.

L. Hoops I am cricket fit but the reason I did not run in from Mid on to take that catch is because In not physically fit?

B.Thompson Youngsters in High school should join their indoor track teams; they might not win many races but they will be in shape for the spring.

A. Mohammed You think USA is more cricket fit or physically fit

L. Hoops I would replace the word cricket fit in a different way. Talent + physically fit equals cricket fit. (Match Fit)  I would say the US team is a talented bunch that lacks physical fitness (few exceptions); as a result, they are not match fit or cricket fit.

Nyyouth Cricket Central Contracts are the very core to a sports team.

Mark A In USA?

Nyyouth Cricket yes Mark.

Nyyouth Cricket sleep, eat, and breathe cricket

Mark A Any of the test playing nations, but not the associates, they called us Hamburger cricketers.

Nyyouth Cricket so how do they expect the Associates to improve?

Vello Cricket Well said Teacher Rick. Central Contracts, so the players are not distracted by other means of living, Ireland has it, Holland and Scotland play in the county championship where they are playing regular cricket so they would have contracts or something close to. That is the only way. WICB had retainer and in TNT have annual contracts, it provides motivation and stability for the system

Omar W Barbados has contracts to but the 12th and 13th man have a big role to play by after each wicket make sure them there with water and I did not watch the games but the guys had to be flat the guys need to cheer on each other and don’t be tired during the game and at the end you should be tired put in you all every ball

New York Women Cricketers Show Serious Interest

By John L. Aaron

 Female Players Eager To Compete

Despite a cricket season that’s in the sunset of 2012 in New York City, several female cricketers and some aspiring ones are demonstrating an eagerness to be part of a revitalized cricketing movement among their peers.

Following several coaching sessions with West Indies women’s cricket coach Stephanie Power and USA national coach Linden Fraser, the ranks of interested women cricketers have grown, and interest appears to be at an all-time high. The most dynamic ingredient is the mix of women participating in the now revitalized program under the continuing watchful eyes of coach Linden Fraser, New York Women’s Cricket Coordinator Venelda Wallace, Regional Representative Krish Prasad, and the region’s Marketing Director Dyon Ravello. There are no fewer than eight national women players romping alongside their younger male counterparts every weekend at the Spring Creek Cricket Ground in Brooklyn, NY.

For the past two weekends, some sixteen ladies have engaged in drills and scrubby matches involving several of the regional Under-15 lads in New York. The scrubby matches have been extremely useful according to Coach Fraser, “They provide realistic match scenarios in a competitive environment, which is great to help elevate the skills of the women players, while providing an on par opportunity for the Under-15 players.”

Coach Fraser was complimentary in his praise of those players who had traveled some distances to get to the ground for the 10:00 am start of the double-header event. He singled out Ms. Rohani Patel, 14 years-old who was up at 6:00 am to travel from Virginia to participate in the day’s matches, before traveling back to the Commonwealth State.

Despite the outlook being very bleak for a national women’s tournament in the US this year, the energy level and enthusiasm of the New York women cricketers and a few from the neighboring State of New Jersey, appear to be very high. New York Women’s Coordinator Venelda Wallace, in reiterating the objective of the training program, said, “We want to keep the interest level high, while providing an opportunity for the ladies to maintain a level of fitness and skills, so that they would be ready when called upon to play in any tournament.”

In a double-header clash last weekend against the Under-15 lads, the ladies were defeated by 50 runs in the first match, however, in the second match the sparse crowd on hand witnessed a nail-biting draw, as the lads scored 60 runs in 18 overs, (restricted with the bowling help of at least two under-15 lads) only to see the women claw, scratch, and wiggle their way to a match-ending 60 runs as well on the very last ball of the 18-overs contest. The Women’s XI included national players Doris Francis, Triholder Marshall, Karen Bayles, Delkash Shahriarian, Grace Chadderton-Richards, and Melissa Sandy. Doris Francis with figures of 4-0-16-3 and Triholder Marshall 3-0-3-2 and Karen Bayles 2-0-10-1 were among the day’s wicket-takers.

National Regional Representative Krish Prasad stated that, “Despite the ladies not playing a lot of cricket during the past 10 months at the regional level, he appreciated the level of enthusiasm, and dedication shown by the women players.” He openly apologized to the ladies present for the lack of any formal regional tournaments organized at the national level for the past year.

Atlantis Sets its Sights on EACA T20 Blitz Title

EASTERN AMERICAN CRICKET ASSOCIATION – 2012

ACC Completes Group Phase With Perfect Record On Course To Semis

By John L. Aaron

Atlantis Cricket Club last Sunday firmly established that it has earned the right to be considered one of the top four clubs in the EACA, by completing its third successive win in the league’s Group “A” T20 Blitz, and against Long Island United Cricket Club (LIUCC) at Brentwood, NY.  Coming off of double-header victories against Phantom and Arsenal the previous Sunday, Atlantis apparently wanted to make an emphatic statement that the team was regrouping after its devastating loss to Everest/ACS in the league’s Power40 Zone Division “A” final.

Nicholas Stanford scored 108 to lift Atlantis to EACA 2012 T20 Blitz semifinals. Photo by John Aaron

Accepting the offer to bat first, Atlantis reached 192 for the loss of five wickets in exactly 20 overs. The club opened with vice-captain Nicholas Standford and Alex Amsterdam, and the duo remained at the crease until the 13th over with the score at 133. Alex Amsterdam was caught off the bowling of Sajeed Khan going for a heave-ho, and only two runs shy of a half-century that included 3x6s and 3x4s. The slender all-rounder had played a supporting role alongside Standford who would go on to score his second century of the 2012 season before losing his wicket bowled Qasim Dastgir on the last ball of the 20th over. Standford’s ton of 108 included 5x6s and 10x4s off 65 deliveries. Along the way he saw the fall of the wickets of Shawn Mason caught, 2, Henderson Blades run out, 4, Keon Lake caught and bowled, Khan, 00, with Jason Greaves emerging not out on 8.

The Atlantis wickets fell at 133, 144, 154, 157 and 192. Bowling for LIUCC – Sajeed Khan had figures of 4-0-31-3 and Q. Dastgir 4-0-31-1. The other four bowlers used by LIUCC were unable to penetrate the Atlantis batting line-up and accounted for a combined contribution of 127 runs. The LIUCC’s bowlers also contributed to 22 extras, including 18 wides.

Stanford in full flow during Atlantis’ recent tour of Guyana

In response LIUCC lost their first two wickets with the score at 17, both compliments of some fiery bowling from the arm of Casper Davis, Jr. Adnan Khan, 5 and B. Zia, 11. Except for fifth and sixth-wicket partnerships of 42 and 30 respectively, LIUCC found it very difficult to build a challenging response, as they kept losing wickets at a quick pace. LIUCC batting at times showed glimpses of a fighting spirit, yet the Atlantis bowlers, although giving up 20 extras were extremely proficient in restricting the LIUCC’s batsmen.

Top scorers for LIUCC were Waqas Ashiq, 44 off 31 balls, including 1×6 and 5x4s. J. Khan contributed 30 off 18 deliveries with 2x6s and 2x4s. Sajeed Khan, 14 and opener B. Zia, 11, were the only other LIUCC batsmen to reach double-digits in the team’s tally of 150 all out in 19.2 overs. The LIUCC wickets fell at 17, 17, 34, 47, 89, 119, 129, 123, 140 and 150. Bowling for Atlantis – Casper Davis, Jr 4-0-14-3, Jason Greaves 1.2-0-4-2, Hugh Craig 4-0-24-2 as K. Lake and D. Hurley each with one wicket for 29 and 34 runs respectively, rounding out the wicket-takers of the day.

Having completed a sweep of its three T20 matches in two weeks, Atlantis has set its sights firmly on the league’s T20 Blitz title for 2012. However, the club must first get past Richmond Hill in The Cage this Sunday, to advance to the 2012 finals. Game time 11 am, with Meten Meer Zorg facing Power Champs ACS Everest in the second semifinal from 2:30pm.

Champions League T20 2012, Take Your Pick At Team Red Force

Take your pick at Team TnT’s Red Force as the journey continues in the Land of Mandela. Team TnT are making their first trip to South Africa after missing the second Championship finishing third in CT20 back in 2010. The Red Force has developed an impressive record on their two previous visits to India, reaching the final in 2009 and completing a creditable group phase performance in 2011.

Kevon Cooper impact on CLT20 will be key to Red Force Success in 2012

As much as the Champions League have been a gracious blessing for cricket in the Caribbean more so in the Twin island republic it has come with its losses. In 2009 TnT played unbeaten till finals day when New South Wales were crown the inaugural Champions League winners. The Trini’s run in 2009 propelled Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo into the IPL spotlight with both benefiting from lucrative contracts on the Indian circuit. TnT again qualified for CLT20 in 2011 after missing South Africa in 2010, with both Pollard and Bravo playing for their IPL contingents. Red Force losing two very valuable players, which showed at crucial times in 2011. Without the big all-rounders, Team TnT unearthed a star in Sunil Narine, as he spun webs around the Champions League batsmen, benefit TNT 2011.

A year later Narine has joined Pollard and Bravo on the IPL trail after an outstanding campaign on the sub-continent. Narine too will not be wearing red in South Africa CLT20 2012, TNT’s curse 2011. Nevertheless Ramdin’s men will be brewing with confident when they line up against Hampshire and UvaNext in the qualifying stages of CLT20 2012. The likes of Lendl Simmons, IPL’s Kevon Cooper, and leg spinner Samuel Badree, will be vital to TNT’s hopes of advancing to the main stage and beyond. There is no surprise that former captain Ganga merely missed selection, as a true pioneer of the game has passed his time at least in the shortest version. Likewise Dave Mohammed, remains a fallen angel far from his animated celebrations of CLT20 2009, as he too will be looking on from the LED screen. Newcomers to CLT20 Evin Lewis and Yannick Ottley have earned their selections rising from a list of very competitive athletes.

Williams Perkins makes his return to the squad alongside Navin Stewart, both having missed out on Caribbean T20 earlier in the year. The team is completed by seasoned campaigners all of who made the last trip to India; Darren Bravo, Jason Mohammed, Sherwin Ganga, Rayad Emrit, Ravi Rampaul, Adrian Barath and Shannon Gabriel. With only two qualifying spots up for grabs the Men of the Land of Soca/Chutney fever will be keen to take care of business against their English and Sri Lankan counterparts as they look to advance to the main event.

Game Time:

October 10th 17:30 GMT, 13:30 ECT/EST Trinidad and Tobago and Hampshire.

October 11th 13:30 GMT, 9:30 ECT/EST Trinidad and Tobago and Uva Next.
