Mendonca’s Ton Headlines Record Win For Liberty SC

Blue Nation back to winning ways

Liberty SC's Francis Mendonca scored 103 in a record crushing win over All Star C.C.

Liberty SC’s Francis Mendonca

A scorching century from opening batsman Francis Mendonca was the main attraction in a 283 runs victory by the GMA Enterprise sponsored Liberty Sports Club over All Star Cricket Club. All of the top five batsmen in the LSC line up got past the half century mark after #TheBlueNation chose to bat first. The result was a LSC team record score of 385 for 5 off 40 overs before the boys in blue bundled out ASCC for 102 in their chase.

All Stars CC started off the day on the back foot having shown up late resulting in them forfeiting the toss and losing 3 of their batting overs. Bad quickly became worse when Mendonca and Dilly Khilawan strode to the crease. The pair scored briskly complements of Mendonca who got to his half century by the 8th over. It would take him 9 more overs to get to his maiden Liberty Spots Club century in just his 4th Eastern American Cricket Association (EACA) match for the club.

Spanking nine fours and a six (9x4s, 1x6s) Mendonca dominated a 161 runs opening partnership, also a new club record. Khilawan played responsibly and allowed his partner to take control of the ASCC attack. Mendonca stroked 17 fours and a six (17x4s, 1x6s) in his knock which spanned 18 overs. Khilawan would bring up his half century shortly after Mendonca departed for 103. Dilly struck five fours and a six (5x4s, 1x6s) during his stay at his crease but was out leg before wicket for 50, shortly after bringing up his 2nd half century in 2014.

Trinson Carmichael and captain, Danesh Deonarain, continued the assault on the All Stars attack. Carmichael, the aggressor in the 3rd wicket partnership, stroked nine charismatic fours and a six (9x4s, 1x6s) before he also departed shortly after he had posted his half century, 56. Deonarain struck three fours and two sixes (3x4s, 2x6s) to notch 57 to his name during his stay at the crease which ended in the final over.

If the previous four batsmen provided fireworks Terrence Madramootoo ensured that the spectacle ended with a BIG BANG. The hard hitting right-hander exploded two fours and sky-rocketed six hefty maximums (2x4s, 6x6s) to race to 55 in no time as the innings closed. Imtiaz Hassan and Andy Harricharran each struck a boundary to close off the inning and finishing 6 and 5 not out respectively.

An exhausted All Stars CC unit, needing to score in excess of 10 runs an over to get close to the target within their 37 overs, commenced their chase with an unnecessary run out of their captain Ganesh Morgan. The tragic start signaled a constant procession of wickets falling before ASCC was eventually bowled out for 102.

Veteran seam bowler Tooneshwar Kristona rolled back the years and produced a mesmerizing spell of swing bowling to wrap up the victory for LSC. Kristona bowled 3.5 overs and picked up four (4) wickets for seven (7) runs to seal a club record 283 runs victory. Earlier in the defense of the mammoth total Madramootoo picked up 2 for 37 off 8 overs, Leon Mohabir accounted for 2 scalps for 22 runs in his 5 overs while Imtiaz Hassan picked up 1 for 19 off 4 overs.

For All Stars Kamal Ahmed 31*, Rahi Faruque 20 & Vaughn Dookran 15 were the only batsmen to make it to double figures.

#TheBlueNation will take on Arsenal CC at Heckshire State Park in their last match of the EACA Power40 Zone stage of the competition.

Liberty’s Imtiaz Hassan, continued to be consistent but it was not enough against ACS/Everest

A patient innings of 80 by Tamesh Balwant and a penetrating spell from Andre Stoll helped Everest/ACS edge Liberty Sports Club (LSC) by 19 runs at Lido Beach. Imtiaz Hassan continued his consistent performances for LSC with 1 for 34 off 8 overs and a hard hitting 47 while Trinson Carmichael picked up three wickets and struck 31 along with Francis Mendonca scoring 35. Their efforts, however, were not enough to chase down the below par 206 set by E/ACS.

Winning the toss and choosing to bat first Everest’s top order, with the exception of Balwant, never looked fluent in their innings. Stringing together small partnerships and benefiting from a number of drop catches the experienced side reached 132 for 5 by the time the second water break was taken at the 30th over.

Balwant batted with great composure and patience hitting seven fours and two sixes on his way to 80.  He eventually was dismissed in the later part of the innings, sacrificing what appeared to be a sure century in an effort to up the team’s total. The experienced Zamin Amin came in at number seven (7) and added vital runs to the total with an unbeaten 50. The knock included 22 off the final over of the innings to spur Everest past the 200 mark to end on 206 for 9.

Bowling for LSC Carmichael finished with 3 for 54 off 8 overs, Andy Harricharan  2 for 38 off 7 overs while Hassan, Terrence Madramootoo and Leon Mohabir picked up a wicket each.

Whatever confidence #TheBlueNation had as a result of restricting ACS to a get-able total was quickly removed by Andre Stoll’s opening spell. The former Guyana youth player peeled off three (3) quick wickets in his first four (4) overs. Carmichael watchfully staged a fightback, however, and even turned the attack back on Stoll hitting him straight back over his head for 6. The lanky paceman would get his revenge when Carmichael went for an expansive drive through cover but only succeeding in edging to the wicketkeeper.

With the innings at 43 for 4 at Carmichael’s departure it was up to Francis Mendonca and Imtiaz Hassan to consolidate and keep LSC on track to the target.  Mendonca handled the paceman with ease and even picked off a few elegant cover drives before the pair saw off Stoll who finished with figures of 4 for 31 off 8 overs. The pair then started to work away at the other bowlers with Hassan taking a particular liking to Zamin Amin’s slow left-arm spin. The left-hander blasted seven (7) sixes and a four before an unfortunate short delivery kept low to trap him leg before on 47.

Terrence Madramootoo joined Mendonca and the pair continued to keep the chase in check but Mendonca would fall off a miss timed drive. Captain, Danesh Deonarain came and went playing an injudicious shot when his team needed a sensible innings. Madramootoo would fall shortly after with about 50 more runs needed and appeared all hope was lost.

Vijendra Singh, who has been enjoying some success with the bat late in the inning, kept some hope alive, however. The left hander struck 21 runs which include hooking Charlton Senior for six. His valiant resistance was over when he was the last batsman to go for Liberty SC at the end of the 37th over with the score on 188.

Besides Stoll’s exploits, Merchant picked up 3 for 27 while Zamin Amin picked up 2 for 47 and Karan Ganesh one (1) wicket bowling for Everest.

The loss leaves Liberty SC at 5-1 heading into the July 4th weekend break with games against All Stars and Arsenal CC while Everest/ACS improve to 4-2 with games left against Arsenal & Long Island United CC in the Zone stage of the Eastern American Association Power40 tournament.

Liberty SC Extends Unbeaten Run To 5-0

Carmicheal, Hassan rout NY Centurion after Madramootoo’s blitz

Terrence Madramootoo topscored with 67 as Liberty blew away NY Centurions

Terrence Madramootoo topscored with 67 as Liberty blew away NY Centurions

An inspired spell of new ball bowling between Trinson Carmicheal and Imtiaz Hassan routed New York Centurion Cricket Club for a paltry 54 when they met Liberty Sports Club (LSC) at Flushing Park on Sunday. Carmicheal bowled with fiery pace and hostility to scalp 6 for 29 off 7 overs while Hassan’s guile and accuracy was on premium display to knock over 4 for 15 in 8 overs. The duo build on a Terrence Madramootoo’s blitzkrieg earlier when LSC batted first. The big hitting right-hander hammered  Six (6) sixes (6’s) and a four in his inning of 67 to help LSC post 194.

The host captain, Danesh Deonarain, won the toss on the first summer Sunday in 2014 and chose to bat. Openers Dilly Khilawan and Altaaf Habibulla went about their task in very workmen like fashion, accumulating runs and picking off the odd boundaries on the heavy Flushing outfield. Habibulla was the first to go, run out, for 28 having made an injudicious call for a single. Khilawan would follow shortly after being trapped leg before.  Carmicheal once again got a start before he was adjudged leg before wicket for 14.

Madramootoo joined Deonarain in the middle and right away he signaled his presence with a powerful six over wide long on.  The pair would add 25 before Deonarain miscued a pull shot and was out for 20 off a sharp catch by Trevor Singh.  Hassan’s stay at the crease was brief but the fall of wickets did not bother Madramootoo. He went on to hit 25 off an over while he and Bose Persaud put on 42 for the 6thwicket. Another massive six brought up Madramootoo’s half century as he had celebrated his birthday the day before. The power hitter only needed 11 overs to get to his 67 and would have possibly scored even faster had he found a reliable partner to stay with him.

The remaining LSC batsmen moved the score along to 194 after Madramootoo was out with 183 on the board.  Carlos Bachu was the pick of the NY Centurion bowlers with 2 for 21 off 6 overs while Shamar Graham and Carlton baker picked up two (2) wickets each.

Centurion’s attempt at a chase lacked any resilience baring Graham and Bachu who both managed to get to double figures. Six batsmen returned to the pavilion failing to get off the mark and that included numbers two (2) through five (5). Hassan trapped Trevor Singh on the crease for 8 to start the crumble, then had the number (3) batsman nicking to the wicket keeper, Bose Persaud. The double strike by Hassan inspired Carmicheal to his own double strike the very next over.

Nicholas Harripersaud managed an edge to the keeper and Steve Ragubar lost his leg stump the next ball. The hat-trick ball saw a loud LBW appeal turned down before a maiden was completed. Hassan sent down a maiden immediately after then wicket numbers 5 and 6 would fall to leave the chase in tatters at 6 wickets for 9 runs in the 7th over. Bachu counterattacked, making room and heaving at the pace of Carmicheal. He would get through with 14 runs before the paceman uprooted his middle stump to celebrate his five wicket haul.

Graham played sensibly for his unbeaten 16 but the remaining batsmen were wrapped up in the 15th over to seal a massive 140 runs victory.

The win moves Liberty SC to 5-0 in the Eastern American Cricket Association Power40 competition. #TheBlueNation takes on the formidable Everest/ACS next Sunday at Lido Beach and will be looking to make it 6-0.
