Cricket Let’s Play USA / Staten Island Cricket Club YOUTH CRICKET MATCH
14 OCTOBER 2017
MAKING CRICKET HISTORY
By Mr. Clarence Modeste
On Saturday 14th October 2017 two youth teams gathered at the historical Walker Park, Staten Island, New York, for a T20 cricket match. This was the first youth cricket match, apart from Youth Festival Cricket, played at Walker Park. The impetus for this match sprang from a request by Mr. Dyon Ravello, president of CLPUSA (Cricket Let’s Play USA), a youth cricket program started in 2014 with students in Queens and Manhattan. Mr. Ravello made the request after coaching a couple of sessions at Walker Park in the absence of Mr. Linden Fraser who was away for a couple of weeks. The Executive Committee of the Staten Island Cricket Club (SICC) agreed not only to having the match but to hosting. Due to the greater advancement and experience of the CLPUSA (they play with the hard ball whereas the SICC students have experience only with the soft ball) it was agreed that the students from both programs would be placed in a single pool and divided into two teams. This was done with the help of Linden Fraser, the Staten Island youth coach and Mr. Dyon Ravello. The teams were designated “A” and “B”.

Staten Island Cricket Club Youths (SICC)
Cricket Let’s Play USA (Queens) (CLPUSA-Q)
That Saturday began, as usual for the Staten Island Cricket Club Youths, with a yoga session which includes parents followed by a youth only karate session. It was a lovely afternoon, warm for that time of year and a number of parents were in attendance to watch and encourage their children. The decision was made to play 20 overs. Team B won the toss and elected to bat. The children, none older than 14 years, the youngest at 6, threw themselves enthusiastically into the match. They bowled with expectation, fielded with urgency and at bat they showed a desire to score runs. Together these brought joy to their families and a good measure of satisfaction to their coaches.
Some performances are worth noting from Team B Jayden Babulal scored 15 runs, Naveer Ramsarran 10, Jayden Higgins 7, Bharat Babulal 6 and Jenany Jayakumar 5. From Team A Notable scores were: Alex Babulal 14 runs, Ali Chowdhury 8 and Haris Muneeb 5. Noteworthy bowlers on Team B were Jayden Higgins who took 3 wickets and Janany Jeyakumar who took 2. Noteworthy bowlers for team A were Harris Muneeb who took 2 wickets and Adesh Persaud who also 2.
Each team batted out its allotted 20 overs. Team B scored 62 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Team A responded with 56 for the loss of 9 wickets. The match was enjoyable and exciting as it seemed for a while that team A’s score might catch up with team B’s. Only for Haseeb Chowdhury to successfully defend 18 runs off his last over.
Dr. Kumar Balakrishnan, Staten Island’s 2nd vice president, took on the task of providing refreshments as well as providing operational assistance. Dr. Sushila Balakrishnan carried out the task of taking photographs. Umpiring services were provided by Mr. Clarence Modeste and Mr. Naresh Ramsarran.
ICC World Cricket League Division III, Road to England 2019 Cricket World Cup
The Team USA squad has been announced for ICC World Cricket League Division 3 in Uganda.
Following on from the USA’s success at #WCL4, the extended squad of 31 players named in the lead up to that event were joined by 13 new faces at the March trial at Moosa Stadium in Houston. This group was then reduced to 19 for the recent Skill Development Camp in Houston where players were further assessed to reach the final squad of 14 players, plus one traveling reserve.
Commenting on the squad for #WCL3, USA Chairman of Selectors Ricardo Powell said: “The selection panel believes we have selected the best possible squad to represent the United States of America at the upcoming World Cricket League Division 3. It was pleasing to see some significant improvements in individual players at the trials. There was strong competition for spots, meaning some quality players have missed selection. We encourage all players across the country to keep working hard on their game and as we continue to drive the standard of U.S. cricket forward.”
“Four changes have been made from the squad that travelled to LA for WCL 4. We feel these players will boost the squad’s batting depth and also its flexibility, with additional spin bowling options. We wish the selected players and coaching staff all the best for their preparation and a successful event.”
USA Head Coach Pubudu Dassanayake said: “I have been pleased to see the improvements in a number of players, both those who have been selected, but also those who are unlucky to miss selection. We have had two great camps in Houston to challenge our players and help to increase performance standards. We are looking forward to getting the group together in LA for some more practice matches before we head to South Africa for our pre-tour, on the way to Uganda. There is plenty more hard work to be done to prepare as best we can over the next month but I am confident this group can go to Uganda and win WCL 3.”
Team USA squad: Steven Taylor (Captain), Akeem Dodson, Alex Amsterdam, Camilus Alexander, Elmore Hutchinson, Fahad Babar, Jasdeep Singh, Mohammed Ahsan Ali Khan, Mohammed Ibrahim Khaleel, Mrunal Patel, Nicholas Standford, Noshtush Kenjige, Timil Patel, Timroy Allen, Sagar Patel (traveling reserve).
USA has selected 18 in preparation for the World Cricket League Division Three in Uganda this May. Following trials where 50 players participated in Houston from March 16th. The 18 players will return to Houston from April 6-9 to finalize selection for Division Three which is due April 21st.
The squad is as follows: Akeem Dodson, Ali Khan, Camilus Alexander, Elmore Hutchinson, Fahad Babar, Ibrahim Khaleel, Jasdeep Singh, Mrunal Patel, Nicholas Stanford, Noshtush Kenjige, Prashant Nair, Randall Wilson, Ravi Timbawala, Roy Silva, Sagar Patel, Steven Taylor, Timil Patel and Timroy Allen.
The squad includes 11 incumbents from the Division Four campaign, with Abdullah Syed and Danial Ahmed both missing out, while Alex Amsterdam is doubtful due to work commitment. From the remaining seven only Mrunal Patel has represented the United States at the senior level. Wilson and Sagar Patel are both former youth players knocking on the door. The hype about the three First Class player carry through with Alexander (Windward Islands), Khaleel (Hyderbad) and Silva (Sri Lanka) all making it to the final round of trials. Noshtush Kenjige completes the list with his talent and ability keeping him in the mix since the USA Combines of 2016.
