ATLANTIS BOUNCES BACK WITH DOUBLE-HEADER WINS

EASTERN AMERICAN CRICKET ASSOCIATION 2012 T20 BLITZ

Club regroups for EACA T20 Blitz
By John L. Aaron

After coming up very short in the Eastern American Cricket Association’s Power40 Zone Division “A” championship final, Atlantis Cricket Club bounced back last weekend to win it’s first two matches in the league’s 2012 T20 Blitz tournament at Heckscher State Park.

Atlantis’ Mach Speed outruns Phantom

With several players unavailable for the start of the EACA’s phase two 2012 tournament, Atlantis fielded two players short in both matches; starting against Phantom Cricket Club shortly before Noon and Arsenal later in the afternoon. Winning the toss against Phantom and electing to bat, Atlantis quickly got up to Mach speed striking 28x4s and 12x6s in their tally of 262 in 20 overs, mainly off the blade of opener Henderson Blades, who struck 145 not out (19x4s, 9x6s) and Alex Amsterdam who narrowly missed a half-century striking 2x4s and 1×6 in his knock of 47.

Atlantis lost three wickets along the way; Ryan Sukhdeo, 23 (2x4s, 1×6), Nicholas Standford, 6, and Alex Amsterdam, 47. The wickets were shared by three Phantom bowlers, F. Baloch 4-0-34-1, S. Regmi 4-0-61-1 and H. Naseer 4-0-29-1. Extras contributed 40, while the remaining two Phantom bowlers A. Bangash 0 for 59 off 4 overs and S. Murtaza 0 for 49 off 4 overs, chipped in with sizable contributions.

In response, Phantom disappeared for a paltry 77 all out in 20 overs, with the top three batsmen Atif Bangash, 19, Shakeeb Murtaza, 13, and Vignesh Murali, 10, being the only ones along with Extras, 17, to record double-digits. Bowling for Atlantis: Skipper Prashanth Nair captured 3 for 13 off 4 overs. Alex Amsterdam 4-0-15-2 along with Hugh Craig one for 3 off 2 overs and Keon Lake one for 9 off 4 overs were responsible for the remaining wickets, as Phantom fielded only nine pilots.

Atlantis robs Arsenal with 10 soldiers
Atlantis, having posted 262 in the first match, appeared to not have enough arrows left in its quiver to shoot down Arsenal Cricket Club, posting only 136 for 7 in the second match of the day, which was reduced to 17 overs.

The EACA Power40 Zone Division “A” runners-up Atlantis got off to a painful start losing its first four wickets for less than 50 runs, with three of those wickets falling with the score stuck at 44. Top scorers in Atlantis’ 136 were Alex Amsterdam, 55 not out off 35 balls (4x6s, 4x4s), Keon Lake, 36 off 26 balls (3x6s, 2x4s) in the opening slot and opening his account with a massive six over long-on, Henderson Blades batting down the order recorded a patient 17, while Kavishwar Bridgepaul scored an even 12 via two sixes. Extras appeared 13 times.

The Atlantis wickets fell at 9, 44, 44, 44, 71, 102 and 103. Bowling for Arsenal; Maqsood Alam was the pick of the crop with 3-0-36-3, with Rehan Shahid, Shaveed Zaman and Lisan Chowdury each grabbing one wicket for 12, 21 and 25 respectively.

Arsenal was scuttled out for a mere 90 in 16 overs, with Prashanth Nair grabbing 4 for 15 off 4 overs with his right-arm leg-breaks, a feature within his arsenal for some time now. Although the Arsenal batsmen showed remarkable poise at times, the Atlantis bowlers were able to focus, contain the batsmen and keep the victory within sight, while defending one of their lowest totals for the 2012 season.

Alvi Ali top scored for Arsenal with 26 off 28 deliveries (2x4s), with contributions of 14 not out and 11 coming off the bats of Ayyas Chaudry and Ibrar Ahmad respectively. Extras contributed 15, as Atlantis robbed the Arsenal of the victory by 46 runs.

The Arsenal wickets fell at 33, 37, 47, 57, 59, 73, 80 and 86. In addition to P. Nair’s 4 for 15, Hugh Craig had 2 for 17 off 3 overs, Alex Amsterdam 2 for 22 off 4 overs and Keon Lake 1 for 16 off 2 overs.

And so the day ended on a very positive note for a rebounding Atlantis that’s hoping to make it to the semi-finals in the EACA’s T20 Blitz. This Sunday, the 2-0 Atlantis will clash with the 1-1 LIUCC at Brentwood, NY. Match time is 1:00 pm.

ACA edge Punjab to take Vellocricket Festival

by Dyon Ravello

ACA edged Punjab in velloCricket Festival

velloCricket hosted its first Cricket Festival on September 1st at Marine Park. Americas Cricket Academy hosted Punjab in the friendly encounter, which was contested fiercely from ball one. Punjab batted first after winning the toss. Opening with Shabaz and Bilal, Punjab were circumspect in their approach. Anthony Karim induced the first chance for the Students as Bilal was caught at short third man by Chris Singh. Shabaz was joined by Junaid Alam as the pair took control with an partnership of 108 Junaid benefited from a chance as Ravello failed to hold on to a return catch. Shabaz remain composed as he scored 60 with Junaid scoring 48.

Dino Cho Wee Nam worked Junaid Timber to break the partner as he accounted for  .Wahab Munir leg before. Ata Khan had Irfan Naseem leg before and Imran Mahzar caught at cover trying to push the scoring rate at the close of the innnings. Ravello bowling the final over ensured there was no late flourish concede a mere three runs as Punjab closed on 163 off the allotted 20 overs.

Jahanzib Alam missed out a T20 ton scoring 94 for Americas Cricket Academy, an Academy Record. Photo By Mark Audain

The Academy were in all sort of trouble as Cho Wee Nam steered Wahab Munir to gully for the first duck, Babar taking a simple catch. Zafar Khan got into the action from ball one with Abdullah Syed caught at first slip by Mahzar. Jahanzib Alam joined Hugo D’Oliviera but would soon see the back of his partner. D’Oliviera bowled for the third naught of the innings. Munir was not done as he had Anthony Karim caught a slip by Mahzar for no score. Zafar had his second first ball victim of the innings, Andre Kirton bowled, Americas Cricket Academy reeling at 15/5 chasing 164.

Jahanzib was joined by Sameet Khawaja set about the repair job as they saw out Munir and Zafar. Khawaja rotating the strike for his partner, no stranger to frenetic finishes. Earlier in the season Khawaja partnered with Rafique Nazeer to pull off a three wicket win against Travel Treat needing 30 runs from 18 deliveries. This time around longevity was required, as Jahanzib dishes the Punjab bowling for maximums and boundaries, Khawaja played the perfect anchor role.  The pair added 116 for the sixth wicket to claw the Academy back into the match. Jahanzib piled on the runs taking a liking to Babar’s off spin, but it would be Babar who would get his man, Jahanzib falling six shy of a century.

Sameet Khawaja cameo features in another ACA win

Ravello joined Khawaja with an equation of 33 runs required from 36 deliveries.  Khawaja fell caught at the wicket, for a well played 38 as Ata Khan came to the wicket. Ravello picked off the singles and doubles before Khan was leg before to Saqib. Ravello was then joined by Sean as the pair worked away at the total. Ravello chipped down the wicket to dispatch Saqib straight down the ground for a boundary to keep the equation in the Academy’s favor. With 5 runs needed off the last over,  Naseem bowling for the first time,  concede two singles and a double in the first three deliveries.  Ravello had the luxury of a break on the fourth ball, then replicated the stroke which yielded a boundary earlier off Saqib.  Americas Cricket Academy recovering from 15/5 to win by two wickets and take the first velloCricket festival.

Harlene Take 5 As Victory Advance to EACA Divison B Final

by Dyon Ravello

Harlene Singh usually opens the bowling for Victory in the Eastern American Power 40 competition, but last Sunday in the semifinal against Arsenal, he was regulated to first change. Tahir Khan got the timber rolling, removing NYPD alum Hasib. Navjot Singh was replaced by his namesake Harlene after three over with immediate success as Harlene scattered stumps in his first over. Harlene removed Arsenal captain Ali Alvi and Masood both leg before to strike three wickets in as many overs. At the other end swing bowler Khan induced the edge for Kabir to hold on to a catch at the wicket.

Incidentally Harlene was replaced with Navjot and Gary Cheema both failing to make an impact. Harlene returned to effect a run out at the bowlers end as he accounted for another scalp. Arsenal struggled to build partnership till the 9th wicket pair, with Harlene striking his first five wicket haul. Ibra Adnan batting at eleven due to tardiness struck fear into the Victory bowling hitting three towering sixes, taking a liking to Rohit Kwatra who was hit yards beyond the ropes for consecutive maximums. Adnan was left stranded on 26 not out, with Harlene scalping 5/35 and Tahir Khan 2/19 Arsenal posting a disappointing 121 in 25.3 overs.

Victory needing a mere 3.05 runs per over were in the driver’s, with their game to lose. Opener Charan played some streaky stroke by ironically he outlasted, Jasdeep, Rohit, and Navjot. Adnan followed up his cameo with the bat as he accounted for Rohit bowled, Charan leg before and Navjot caught. Nipun and Kabir anchored the innings fending off testing spells from Adnan and Masood. Nipun rallied to score 41 not out, with Kabir consolidating for 18, in an unbeaten fifth wicket stand. Victory completing a six wicket win to reach the EACA Division B 2012 final. Falcons defeated All Stars in the second semifinal to advance to meet Victory in Sunday 9th Final.
