Americas Blown Away By Red Force

By Dyon Ravello

To date the ICC Americas had displayed credible performances twice against Barbados Pride. First setting the Pride 183 to win in the opening match of the 2016 Nagico Super 5O tournament. Americas showed that they deserve to be on this stage as Pride needed a late order partnership to secure a hard-earned four wicket victory. Against Jamaica Scorpions the Americas were set 261 for victory, but could only manage a meager 76 in reply.

Following a rained out match against the host and group leaders Trinidad and Tobago Red Force, Americas returned to their feisty ways scoring 202 against a boosted Pride team with six returning West Indian Test players. Again the Americas could only pry out six wickets but nonetheless a credible display by the amateurs.

With just pride to player for in the finally two matches the Americas tackled Red Force for the first time, winning the toss and electing to take first strike. Losing earlier wickets has been a chronic problem for the Americas this tournament. So serious that it cost Ruvindu Gunasekera his job as captain and his place in the side for Friday’s (1/15/2016) match. However the changes proved futile in resolving the issue with the top three being dismissed for 24 within the first 10 overs. Of the top three Steve Taylor was into his fourth innings of the tournament with returns of 17, 12, 41, and 3. Stand-in captain Nitish Kumar who too has also played the entire tournament to date with returns 25, 42, 0 and 2. Akeem Dodson in for his second match on tour, negate the spin with patience. On being served up pace Dodson revert to the aerial root as his means. His first streaky drive eluded the fielder at cover but trying to repeat the shot his paid dearly as Kyle Hope scoped up a leaping catch. Dodson maybe well advised to stick to the shots along the ground if he wants to prove that he belongs at this level, as loose aerial shots are reminiscent of Sunday league club cricket.

Srimantha Wijeratne

Only Srimantha Wijeratne 30 showed purpose against the dominant Red Force as he followed up on his 46 versus the Pride two nights earlier. Wijeratne seemed to be growing in confidence in front of the stumps and is the only player to have played more that one significant innings on tour. Timroy Allen was the only other play to get into double figures for the Americas in a paltry total of 81.

Defending a small total is never a simple task and even more so for a unit learning on the job. Hope compounded the Americas plight as he took 15 off Allen’s first over, the first of the chase. Mohammad Ghous bowled a tight second over, with Jeremy Gordon keeping the Red Force batsmen honest. Hope showed his disdain to dish three boundaries off Ghous. Again Gordon showed the he deserved to be on this stage with his second over. Captain Kumar then turned to himself and Danial Ahmed to try to create inroad in the Red Force line up. Ahmed was on point and even accounted for Hope, working the timber. With time running out Kumar reverted to part-timer Steven Taylor to turn over his off breaks, an over or two which would have been better served for Gordon to show his experience. Red Force completing a compelling nine wicket victory with more that 37 overs to spare.

In the end it was a poor decision to win the toss and bat as the measly total deprived the bowlers of getting a full workout. So too the field placing left a lot to be desired as Kumar had his spinners bowling with Mid Off in the circle even when the initial power-play was completed. In sum Americas have one more chance to play for pride and it serves as an opportunity for the top order to show their true potential; Taylor, Dodson, Kumar, Wijeratne and Amsterdam in particular. Similarly here lies another chance for the bowlers to display their credentials; Gordon, Allen, Ahmed, Ghous, Muhammad Ali Kahn and Hammid Shahid.

The Hero Caribbean Premier League has announced a number of changes to its player draft format for 2016 which will once again see some of the world’s greatest T20 players join the “Biggest Party in Sport”.

The new rules have allowed the six franchise teams to sign one “marquee” player as a free agent before the draft process begins.  Over the last two months the teams have been in negotiations with the best players in world cricket and will be announcing their marquee stars in the first few weeks of the New Year.

The number of players that the franchises can retain before the player draft has been reduced from four to three whilst the squad size increases from 16 to 17 for the new season.

Further changes to the rules include the number of players who must live in the franchise territory being reduced from four to two, whilst the limit on overseas players has increased from four to five.  2015 also saw the introduction of ICC Americas players, with two being selected for the Tridents and Patriots squads. In 2016, at least six ICC Americas players will be guaranteed a contract.

Overall the salary cap for each team has increased to US$780k from US$600k.

Commenting on the changes to the format, Tom Moody, International Director of Cricket for CPL said; “Our aim each year is to make CPL even bigger and better so that we can attract the best T20 players in the world and make it as entertaining as possible for the fans.  Over the past few months we’ve worked alongside the franchise owners to make sure that the 2016 player draft is open and competitive so that the buzz and excitement of CPL will start building from January right through to the tournament launch in the summer.

From early January 2016 we’ll start to reveal the franchise marquee players and the retained players so that by the time the draft comes around in February fans will already have plenty to talk about.”

The 2016 Hero CPL Player Draft will take place in February 2016 with further announcements due in the coming weeks.

Windies PCL Team of the 4th Round

Barnwell

Christopher Barnwell scored 79 and took 5 wickets

The fourth round concluded with just one centurion, the least this season. There were consistent performances by the spinners  while there was a welcomed return for speedster Sheldon Cottrell. There were many contenders for batting places on the team of the week probably the most competitive thus far. With seamers and fast bowlers picking up a large percentage of the wickets compared to previous rounds.

Jamaica Scorpions were made to work for their third consecutive victory as the Leewards Hurricanes were relegated to their fourth straight defeat this season. Wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton scored 51 in the first innings to resist Cottrell’s 5fer on return to first class cricket, as he was supported by Nikita Miller with 4/53. Scorpions left it to the lower order to do the bulk of the batting with Carlton Baugh topscoring with 73. Miller showed his all-rounder ability with 51 of his own. Offspinner Rahkeen Cornwall had 4/76. Shane Jeffers scored 62 with 52 from Orlando Peters as Hurricanes posted a lead. Miller returned with the ball a second time to scalp 4/71. Scorpions were lead home by skipper Paul Palmer 51 to compete a dodgy three wicket victory.

Barbados Pride returned to winning ways as they dismissed the Windwards Volcanoes. For the Pride Kyle Corbin 68 and the in form Sharmarh Brooks 51 led the batting with wickets for Liam Sebastien 4/68 and three each for Shane Shillingford and Dalton Polius. Sebastien scored 47 to rally the lower order as the Volcanoes conceded a first innings lead of 117. Captain Kevin Stoute continued his stellar form with the ball for the Pride this season with 4/30 supported by quick Miguel Cummins who had 3 wickets. Brooks added 66 to his first innings half century, while Roston Chase scored 71 to add to his first innings 35. Sebastien added two more scalps and Shillingford three. Volcanoes got start from Tyrone Theophille 47, Miles Bascombe 40 and Johnson Charles 44 but were undone by the spin of Sulieman Benn 6/55. Chase chipped in with two wickets to complete a resounding 181 run win for the Pride.

Guyana Jaguars continued their rampant dominance with an innings victory over Trinidad and Tobago Red Force. Red Force batting first needed lower order knocks from Marlon Richards and debutante Uthman Muhammad, 53 each to post a respectable first innings total. The Red Force top order was rocked by the seam of Christopher Barnwell 5/32. In response the runs just kept flowing for the Jaguars with a century for Assad Fudadin (102), and half centuries for Leon Johnson 92, Shiv Chanderpaul 82, Raimon Reifer 64 and Barnwell 79. Batting a second time Red Force failed to surpass the Jaguars’ lead, with only Kyle Hope scoring 74 showing any resistance. Veerasammy Permaul scalped 5/62 to add to his 3/59 in the first innings and supported by Gudesh Moti-Kanhai 4/43. The Jaguars have opened up a 20 point lead following their four match winning streak.

Team of the 4th Round: Kyle Hope, Assad Fudadin, Leon Johnson (c), Sharmarh Brooks, Roston Chase, Christopher Barnwell, Carlton Baugh (wk) Nikita Miller, Liam Sebastien, Veerasammy Permaul and Sheldon Cottrell

West Indies PCL Team of Round 3

John Campbell

John Campbell single-handedly delivered win number two for Jamaica Scorpions over T&T Red Force

As the West Indies PCL season completed its third round there were three centurions the most for a round this season. Four players retained their places from the team of the second round, with no West Indian internationals making the cut. In the first round there were six Test players in the team of the round and only one in the second round.

Winwards Volcanoes took care of the Leewards Hurricanes within two days after an early first inning declaration of 24/7 by the later. Controversy over the preparation of the pitch has lead to an investigation into the matter. With the declaration being the only highlight of the first innings it took the second innings before the players could come into action. Tryone Theophille top-scored with 62 to counteract Alzarri Joseph’s 7/46. Nkrumer Bonner led the Hurricanes batting again a mantle that he has taken up this season, scoring 64. Liam Sebastien scalped 5/76 assisted by Alston Bobb 4/48 as the Volcanoes complete a pedestrian eight wicket victory.

Guyana Jaguars had the largest margin of victory, by nine wickets over Barbados Pride. Vishaul Singh added 121 to his 150 from the previous round with 74 from captain Leon Johnson, Assad Fudadin got a start with 42. After being routed in the first innings Pride were forced to follow-on. There was more impetus on the second time of asking with half-centuries by Jonathan Carter (89), Sharmarh Brooks (53), and Roston Chase (50). Gudesh Moti-Kanhai grabbed six wickets in the second innings for a match haul of 9/98 supported by Steven Jacobs 4/123 and Veerasammy Permaul 4/103 leading the reigning champions to their third consecutive win on the season.

Jamaica Scorpions rebounded from their first round lost to Barbados Pride, making it two in two over Trinidad and Tobago Red Force.  Red Force posted a competitive total of the back on a maiden First Class hundred by Jeremy Solozano (110), with only the in-form Steven Katwaroo (45) offering real support. The Scorpions replied with a maiden First Class century of their own, Andre Mc Carthy (121) following up his near miss 92 in the second round. Tamar Lambert returning to the line up supported with 45. Imran Khan was the main operator for the Red Force with the ball with 7/90. The Red Force second innings went pear-shaped to the spin of John Campbell, who claimed 7/73. As if that was not enough Campbell returned with the bat scoring an unbeaten 83 to sting the Red from the Force leading the Scorpions to an impressive six wicket brace.

Team of Round 3: Jeremy Solozano, John Campbell, Leon Johnson (c), Vishaul Singh, Andre Mc Carthy, Jonathan Carter, Tyrone Theophille (wk), Liam Sebastien, Imram Khan, Alzarri Joseph and Gudesh Motie-Kanhai
