Davis lays blame on TT selectors

Veteran Administration on T&T, Champions League Returns

Trinidad and Tobago Captain Denesh Ramdin exerted his best efforts a chief tactician during the 2013 Champions League T20

Trinidad and Tobago Captain Denesh Ramdin exerted his best efforts a chief tactician during the 2013 Champions League T20

FORMER TRINIDAD and Tobago and West Indies opening batsman Bryan Davis is laying the blame on the national team’s exit in the semi-final phase of the T20 Champions League squarely on the hands on the TT selection panel.

In his latest column on the Catholic News, Davis argued with an interview reportedly given by coach David Williams who was satisfied by the team’s effort.

“Now how could it be possible to be satisfied when losing the final opportunity to win the most prestigious club tournament in the world, the Champions League T20,” said Davis.

Mumbai Indians defeated Trinidad and Tobago (dubbed “the Red Force”) by six wickets and Davis described it as “a convincing defeat: signed, sealed and delivered!”

He continued, “don’t let anyone say that it went to the last over! In this type of cricket contest, a 20-overs affair, if the batting team is cruising to victory, there is no need to finish the game off and risk losing wickets and allow the opposition to sneak back in.”

Davis agreed that the loss of pacer Rayad Emrit, due to a right shoulder injury, was crucial “but not one big enough to defend a total on that pitch of 153 for five.”

He wrote, “Denesh Ramdin, the skipper, did an excellent job throughout with his bowling changes and his field placing. It would have been a tough decision at the time as to whether at the completion of Sunil Narine’s second over he should have been allowed to continue to bowl out his spell or save his last two overs for later in the game. Ramdin took the second choice.”

About the team itself, Davis noted, “the tour selectors are on the spot and I have a lot of respect for their undertaking, as choosing a winning team is not an easy thing and needs deep analysis and constant probing. Having said that, they must have the courage of their convictions and it seems to me that conviction was absent.

“The cupboard was bare in India; the chosen team exposed the selectors’ lack of imagination and knowledge. So that when Lendl Simmons batted at the top of the order from game one and failed in his first two games, not even getting off the mark, consideration had to be given to saving him from himself. Nonetheless, they persisted, and he did well in the third; yet in the semi-final, he again seemed out of sorts and failed to score, getting out to an ill-advised stroke.”

Focusing on the batting, the former Glamorgan right-handed batsman commented, “with Jason Mohammed not coming to terms with his game and he and (Nicholas) Pooran supposedly the stabilisers in the middle order, someone like Simmons should have been moved there.

He would not then have been tempted to try rash shots like at the start of the innings since the field would have contained more boundary fielders, the ball would have been a bit older and he would have had every chance to properly evaluate his game and the team’s needs.”

Navin Stewart was recalled to the team after a few years in the wilderness and Davis described him as “a hard trier but in a situation beyond his capabilities.

“On Indian pitches his medium-pace bowling is non-penetrable plus it’s not steady enough to be effective. His slogging style of batsmanship is hardly successful where stroke-play is necessary. I have observed after some years of studying t20 cricket that the stroke-players are the successful ones, even though they attempt an ambitious swing now and then.”

He added, “Sherwin Ganga was never given a second chance after his flop in the first game while others benefited, but he should not have been replaced by Stewart at the time. A coach is supposed to build a player’s confidence but there was little evidence of that happening with Ganga or Pooran.

Davis ended, “TT ought to have opened with Adrian Barath, placed Simmons in the middle order for Pooran, and included Ganga for Stewart. That team would have had a better chance, in my opinion!”

T&T To Host 2014 Regional Super 50

Foreign Sides To Feature At Eight Team Tournament

superCombined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) will not be taking part in the 2014 Super50 cricket series tournament that will be played in T&T at the end of January. T&T Guardian understands that the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) made the decision because of the fact that the tournament is sponsored by the T&T Ministry of Tourism and hence they wanted to attract two foreign teams in an effort to enhance the tourism effort made by the sponsoring country. The T&T government in an effort to boost this country’s image as a sport tourism destination, has decided to sponsor the previously not sponsored Super50 for the next three years. As a result the tournament will be played in T&T and the WICB wants to give T&T the chance of maximum international exposure.

As a result the WICB is in talks with two foreign countries to take part in the tournament and the games which will be carried on ESPN will then be beamed ‘live’ back to those countries. The government will then use the opportunity with eyes trained on the country, to showcase the twin-island republic, so that visitors can come to T&T’s shores. The CCC, therefore, makes way for one of these teams. The only other way it can get in, is if negotiations with any of the other two teams break down. The other reason for taking the CCC out of the tournament, is to give the six original territories their identity. The source who gave the information also revealed that since the advent of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the six territories have lost their identity as players are playing for different countries. The CCC was comprised of players from across the Caribbean and the home base was in Barbados.

The source added that the players who would have normally represented the CCC would then be more or less drafted into their national sides, so that they still get the opportunity to play regional cricket. The Regional Super50 is also going to get a new name as there would also be smaller sponsors coming on board and the WICB is yet to finalise that detail. This would be done after consultation with the various sponsors. Currently all the business of the tournament is being taken care of by the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) as the WICB is yet to name a committee to take charge of the tournament.

An American Cricket Home Remedy

American Cricket Revolution: Charting The Course

by Dyon Ravello

As we continue to ponder which organization will taken us forward, where is the money going to come from or how can we bridge the gap between the expatriates and homegrown Americans. There is a simple and immediate solution, which can help improve the quality of cricket in America. Not to say that leadership, funding and expanding constituencies is not important, as they are like the boulders in the bucket, a work in progress toward being effective.

So here comes the sand; as one continues to observe this fledgling sport, one synonymous to a neglected child screaming for attention, one can notice some simple habits, which can go a long way. Whether you arrive to the park as a player, a coach, a sport journalist, an umpire or as starved fanatic there is no differentiation it’s cricket as usual. Players of various ages backgrounds talents and experiences grace the fields throughout the summer months competing for supremacy, bragging rights, records, and most importantly selection.

At any given club match there is very little if not any pre-match preparation. Compare cricket to other sports be it lacrosse, soccer, track and field you name it, there is always some segment of time allocated to pre-match preparation better known as “warm ups.” This is a necessary aspect not only in sport but should be applied in ones everyday life for the athlete as well as those not so athletic. For the simple reason the warm up gets the body ready for the day’s proceedings as a driver warms his engine especially during the cold months. Secondly the warm up serves as a revision period for the muscles, a reminder of the talent, and skill harnessed by the beholder.

NYCR Donate1To examine cricket more closely, American cricket is saturated by the; Twenty/20 frenzy, League 40 and all that comes in between. To be frank I am not one to preach doom and gloom when it comes to Twenty/20, as it has surely shaped cricket for the better if not only commercially, especially with America, of all places waiting to exhale. Like Twenty/20, 40 over cricket definitely has a place but to what degree? Are we as Americans content with the numerous festivals across the national being the only significant and immediate aspiration after league cricket?

Take us Combine Under-19 2013 as the primary example, 15 of the nation’s most talented youth cricketers with a chance to earn the right to play at the Under-19 World Cup with the opportunity to be notice by scouts, clubs and franchises. Unfortunately with four 50 over matches played last July (2013), the likelihood of half the squad having had the experience of an extended match was non existent, with only captain and national senior team batsman Steven Taylor having such prior exposure.

As an enthusiast, and a planner one cannot recommend far less dictation to leagues, organizations, and promoters to implement 50 over competitions so that our nationals, those who are directly entrusted with our hopes of progression are better prepared. But this is an open challenge to administrators from the parks of Long Island in the east to LA in the west, to implement “Two-Day Two Innings” competitions. This therein will help our batsmen develop a greater appreciation and appetite for batting. Our bowler will now have to become wittier in their strategies and in so doing covering the 50 faults as well as preparing us for the possibility of first class play at the Intercontinental Cup.

Sweet Revenge As Richmond Hill Overpower ACS

EACA Blitz T20 Champions 2013: Richmond Hill

by Royo P. Sankar

Richmond Hill Cricket Club (RHCC) defeated American Cricket Society (ACS) by seven wickets in a nerve wrecking battle last Sunday at the famous Baisley Park (Cage), in the final of the Eastern American Cricket Association’s T20 Blitz competition. As the EACA drew the curtains on the 2013 season it was all topsy-turvy in this fina. Both sides panicked in front of a huge crowd; with ACS off to a great start, but their middle order failed to capitalize, destroyed by the veteran off-spinner Ramphal Bactowar. An opening stand of 85 off 13.1 overs which included 44 dot balls, between Sudesh Dhaniram and Wahid Ward, chasing a somewhat modest target at a required rate of just above a run a ball, kept everyone pondering what was going to happen next. In the process setting up the game for an exciting finish. However, RHCC’s, Debo “Sachin” Sankar provided resolute anchor role in the last couple of matches and continued his coherent form, to ensure that RHCC prevailed as he and Deryck McDonald picked-off 28 from just 20 balls for victory.

Sent in to bat after losing the toss, openers Tamesh Balwant 43 (24) balls and Steve Nowrangilall 39 (20) balls, set ACS off to a flying start.  The pair bludgeoned 62 from 31 deliveries as RHCC opening bowlers Kevin Darlington and Deryck McDonald were clobbered around the park. Their four overs with the new ball leaked 53 with Nowrangilall hammering McDonald’s second over for two fours and a six. Then Balwant took seven off Darlington, before he smoked Shameer Sadloo for 17 in his first 5 balls. But Balwant mistimed a low full toss, bowled from behind the popping crease, as he lobbed straight into the waiting bucket of Ronald Evelyn fielding at long off. Ramphal Bactowar, bowling from the Basketball Court End (N) then became the bowling demon as RHCC sent chaos into the ACS camp. He first flattened Steve Nowrangilall stumps then had Karan Ganesh 6 leg before, playing down the wrong line, Amjad Khan 2 swept straight to Darlington fielding at deep backward square, who did not had to move an inch and Tryon Forde 9 trapped in front. ACS slumped to 112 for 6 by the 14th over.

It was the veteran Zamin Amin batting at number 7, stuck around and was the only other ACS batsman to record double digit 19 from 17 balls as S. Sadloo, Dhaniram and Kumar Nandalall cleaned up the tail. Terry Hastoo duck, Aun Merchant 9 and Ralph Ogle nought were all back in their comfy chair watching Saheed Amin unbeaten on zero, fir a championship total of 144 all out in 19.3 overs. RHCC’s Ramphal Bactowar spun a web around ACS with his prolific leg spins, for returns of 4-0-11-4

With just over a run a ball for victory, it appeared the game would be finished by the 15th over with RHCC’s power-house lineup led by Sudesh  Dhaniram and Wahid Ward. However, it was not what the huge crowd expected, with Wahid Ward coming off a blazing unbeaten century the previous week and Dhaniram known for his exuberant batting display. The duo took a contrasting approach as they milked the bowling and took advantage of any wayward bad deliveries. The first 4 overs yielded 33 runs with Dhaniran mowing Ganesh’s second over for 12, which include three boundaries.

Zamin Amin was introduced from the Foch Boulevard End (S) and immediately began to extract some turn and bound, sending both openers into defensive mode. His four overs would yield a miserly 8 runs with a maiden, an outstanding bowling performance defending 144. RHCC panicked momentarily with the run rate climbing and the scorecard read 57 without loss in 11 overs, with a futher 87 required from 48 balls. Wahid Ward then smoked two sixes off A.Merchant in the 13th over, while Dhaniram stroked seven in the 14th over, bowled by Ganesh, for Ward to thump the final delivery into the crowd.

Trayon Forde was introduced and immediately dismissed Sudesh Dhaniram for 47 (7x4s, 1×6) 41 balls and Wahid Ward 42 (5x6s) 45 balls. With 33 required form 24 balls, Debo Sankar then strode to the wicket and immediately began to mow down the required target with every ball he faced, Shameer Sadloo (1) was run out going for a double as he was sent back by Debo. RHCC eager to make amend following their two runners up finishes in as many EACA championships. With a further 31 required from 18 balls they needed a big over to bring back the game within their reach. That over would be the 18th, which was bludgeoned for 25, Debo.  He deposited the first ball into the crowd then followed up that with a glorious cover drive that rocketed to the fence, McDonald then got into the act with two scorching boundaries through mid-off that raced towards the boundary. The catalytic over which illustrated as 6,4,1,4,4,2 proved that RHCC had matured following ACS’s 2012 EACA T20 Blitz Triumph and Big Apple’s 2013 Power 40 Title.

Karan Ganesh took the ball with seven needed from 12 balls. It was all over for ACS as the duo nudged around singles with Debo handing the final rites to ACS with a double through backward-point as the RHCC players and supporters invaded the field, celebrating wildly with high-fives. Debo Sankar 34 (3×4, 1×6) from 19 balls and Deryck Mcdonald 12 (2×4) from 7 balls remained unbeaten.

ALLEN BOOST FOR US NATIONAL MEN’S TEAM

World Twenty 20 Qualifers, Dubai 2013

US Allrounder Timroy Allen back at the office and ready for National Duty

US Allrounder Timroy Allen back at the office and ready for National Duty

USACA is delighted to announce that talented all-rounder Timroy Allen has reconsidered his decision to retire from international cricket and has made himself available for consideration by the US National Selectors for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier to be played in Dubai in November 2013. Allen announced his retirement earlier in the year citing his growing business and his family’s financial needs as his reason for being unable to continue his cricket career for the US.

Allen has only recently become a father again to Timroy Allen Jr and said he has had chance to reflect on what many people considered a premature retirement at the age of only 26.

Speaking from Orlando today, Timroy said; “Fatherhood has helped me put a few things into perspective and to understand the importance of senior players guiding the next generation coming through. When I announced my retirement earlier in the year, I was juggling a growing family with a new business and the pressures that those things bring. I said some things publicly in the heat of the moment at the time, but my passion for US cricket has always remained strong.

The game of cricket and the USA National team is bigger than any one person. In order for the team to do well at the ICC T20 Qualifier, we all need to be prepared to make a contribution. I am delighted to be in a position to make myself available should the national selectors wish to select me to represent this great country again. I really appreciate USACA giving me another chance to be considered for national honors. I want to do everything I can to help my teammates push USA cricket as far as it can go in this really important tournament”.

Timroy’s concerns over his business have been eased by support from the US National Team sponsor, Smart Choice Auto Group who has offered support to help to run his business while he is away and USACA is grateful to Mr. Shakhi Muhammad and Smart Choice Auto Group for their forward thinking in this situation.

Richmond Hill Look To Dethrone T20 Champs ACS/Everest

EACA T20 Blitz Final 2013
By Royo P.Sankar

Richmond Hill CC & Everest/ACS defeated their opponents in the Eastern American Cricket Association T20 Blitz semi-finals this past Weekend and will face off in the Grand Final this Sunday at the Baisley Cage.

Wazid Ward 141 (62) helped Richmond Hill CC surge into the EACA Blitz T20 Final, and eliminated Big Apple for sweet revenge

Wazid Ward 141 (62) helped Richmond Hill CC surge into the EACA Blitz T20 Final, and eliminated Big Apple for sweet revenge

Richmond Hill Cricket Club (RHCC) last Sunday stormed into the final of the EACA T20 Blitz tournament with a seven wickets and nail-biting victory over their EACA Power 40 final nemesis, Big Apple Cricket Club (BACC) . Led by Wahid Ward who can bat, but also has the capability to tear apart an attack at will. Well, his team needed someone to fire if they were going to make it to the grand finale, he would answer their heed by letting the opposition know and looked imperious during his onslaught, smashing a breathtaking unbeaten 141 from 62 balls that were peppered with 14 blistering fours and 9 massive sixes—in the process registering his first ton for the season and left the Big Apple bowlers in disarray and permanently scared.

It was a thrilling spectacle that had the RHCC camp and supporters cheering incessantly. In their pursuit of 231 at 11.60 an over, RHCC lost prolific batsman Sudesh Dhaniram in the second over, but a second wicket partnership of 136 from 66 balls between Wahid Ward and Debo ‘Sachin’ Sankar was the bedrock in their chase, and they made it look ridiculously easy. More so, stupendous— in the process left a gaping hole in the center core of the Big Apple attack that failed to contain a determined top order. It was a see-saw and nerve raking battle that had not only the players involved, but the hundreds of cricket lovers witnessing the event at the edge of their seats.

Former West Indies U-19 Batsman, Richard Ramdeen scored 122 (56) in vain as Big Apple with sacked

Former West Indies U-19 Batsman, Richard Ramdeen scored 122 (56) in vain as Big Apple with sacked

Earlier, BACC skipper Zaheer Saffie called correctly at the coin flip and had no problem batting first under overcast condition and proved to everyone his decision was a correct one with immense 231 off their allotted 20 overs . Former West Indies U-19 batsman Richard Ramdeen smashed a superb century as he and Romeno Deane (19) plunder 53 in 4 overs providing a searing start in their opening stand. Ramdeen dominated that partnership when he creamed Dhaniram first over for 16, that went for 20, then carved consecutive sixes, inside out from the next, before skipper Shameer Sadloo promptly removed him from the attack. Deane ran himself out going for a quick second run. Ramdeen had done the same a week earlier in the Quarterfinal fixture, as he called Deane only to be short of his ground. However, Zaheer Saffie joined Ramdeen and the pair quickly took the score to 137 in the 12th.With both batsmen tearing away at the RHCC un-penetrative bowling attack. Saffie later fell, stroking a quick-fire 47 from 23 balls (4x4s, 3x6s).

Ramdeen continued the onslaught on RHCC bowlers and bought up his century going for a quick double, raising his bat, high in the air to a cheering Big Apple camp and supporters. He then smashed Shameer Sadloo for 5 scorching boundaries in his third over before Wahid Ward had him caught for a stroke-filled and spectacular 122 form 56 balls (16x4s, 5x6s) with the scorecard on 175 in the 15th over. Andre Kirton stayed briefly for 9 , while Clain Williams and Thelston Johnson were left unbeaten on 22 and 10 respectively in their final total of 235.

BACC wicket fell at: 52 (R.Deane), 137 (Z.Saffie), 175 (A.Kirton) and 216 (R.Ramdeen). The RHCC bowling figures: S.Dhaniram 2-0-38-0 , R.Bactowar 4-0-41-1 ,Z.Sadloo 4-0-54-0 ,S.Sadloo 4-0-46-0 ,K.Nandalall 4-0-33-1 and W.Ward 2-0-20-1.

In their chase of 232 at almost 12 an over,RHCC suffered a early set back when Sudesh Dhaniram (5) flicked Thelston Johnson full toss straight to R.Ramdeen fielding at long-leg with the score on 5 as the BACC players began to celebrate wildly across the field as if the game was over. Not so fast, Forget it! Debo Sankar partnered Wahid Ward at the center, as the duo stunned the BACC bowlers and everyone watching with scintillating stroke-play and fireworks aplenty. Raining sixes and fours filled the atmosphere, as the Baisley Pond Park was burning runs with Big Apple  feeling the brunt of the heat with Wahid Ward and Debo Sankar on fire.

The duo were always on course despite the daunting run rate of near 12 an over with Debo providing the early tempo in their partnership— smoking 4x4s and 4x6s in his 55 from 30 balls before he was given a dubious run out decision that most spectators believed needed the third umpire review. With the scorecard reading 141 in the 13th over and a further 94 required from 42 balls . Shameer Sadloo coming in at number 4 joined Wahid Ward at the crease as the match suddenly shifted to turbo-gear. With Ward continued to mow-down the target to bits and pieces. He clubbed  Andre Rusty Kirton 3rd over for two massive sixes then followed up that by mowing two more that went very far, beyond the boundary, this time the bowler was Telston Johnson. Shameer Sadloo then got into the act, carving consecutive sixes off Zaheer Saffie’s 3rd over and taking the score to 224 in the 19thover.

With 12 required for victory in the final over the match was heading for a nail-biting finish. Andre Rusty Kirton was entrusted with the ball hoping for a BACC victory. However, that was easier said than done as Wahid Ward smoked his first delivery through long-off for 4, then followed up that with another in the same direction, this time a couple of bounces into the fence. Four balls remaining and 5 runs required, everyone on their feet. The third delivery Ward pulled through mid-wicket for a couple then swung at the next, but only got a single. two balls remained, one run for victory. Shameer then hit a full toss straight back into the hands of Kirton. Deryck McDonald then strode to the wicket with one ball and one run for victory, he thumped the final ball straight down the ground for a boundary as the RHCC supporters and players invaded the field, celebrating wildly.

RHCC wickets fell at : 5 (S.Dhaniram), 141(D.Sankar) , 235 (S.Sadloo) Bowling BACC : A.Kirton 4-0-48-1, T.Johnson 4-0-29-1, S.Raghubar 1-0-17-0, M.Gomes 3-0-32-0, N.Balram 4-0-39-0, R.Ramdeen 1-0-12-0 and Z.Saffie 3-0-42-0.

Richmond Hill CC spurred by a blistering knock of 141 off 62 balls by Wahid Ward successfully chased down 235 against Big Apple CC in Semi-Final 1 played at Baisley Pond. RHCC will go into the final having lost only one match in the group stage, that against Liberty SC. Their rout to the final included knocking over Atlantis CC in the Quarter Final.

Everest/ACS remained undefeated in the competition when they beat Liberty SC inside the 20th over chasing 173 in their semi-final match. E/ACS won both of their group stage matches and got a walk over for two others. They then defeated Meten-Meer-Zorg CC in he Quarter-Final of the tournament before knocking out Liberty SC.

The two experienced squads will clash at 1 PM at the Baisley Cage to determine the winner of the T20Blitz competition. The match will also bring an end to the 2013 season for the Eastern American Cricket Association league.
