Can Jamaica Dent Team T&T In CT20 Opener

by Dyon Ravello,

Jamaica have swept all the Caribbean silverware up for grabs, all but one. The T20 prizes has only been shared by Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana both from the Southern Caribbean. Tamar Lambert will be keen to add the Caribbean T20 prize to the cabinets at Sabina as it comes with qualification to the Champions League.

Can Gabriel fill the Rampaul void

Can Gabriel fill the Rampaul void

Without the reggae nation’s twp premier batsmen Marlon Samuels and Chris Gayle the task seems more challenging. Surprisingly though Jamaica’s record five consecutive seasons at the helm of the regional four day competition, have come with minimal contribution from the globetrotting heavyweights. Lambert will be able to rely on the experience of seasoned campaigners like, Nkrumah Bonner, David Bernard Jr, Odean Brown, Sheldon Cotterell, Andre Russell, Nikita Miller and Krishmar Santokie. New faces have been add to the squad, John Campbell, Yannick Elliott, Jermaine Merchant, Andre Mc Carthy, and Aldane Thomas completing the line up

As the Northerners attempt to rock the Trinibagonians they will have to take on an almost full strenght contingent. The defending champs who have made the shortest format the version of choice in recent time with be will the IPL stars, Sunil Narine, Dwayne Bravo, and Kevon Cooper, but not Keiron Pollard. Pollard will be on his way back from the Big Bash and will be available for Game 2 against Combine College Campuses.

Trinidad and Tobago will be well aware of the challenges at hand with the field reinforcing its artillery. Jamaica is just the initial hurdle with Guyana and Barbados toning up to dethrone the co-host. Ramdin’s troop will be eager to sweep the field in an attempt to make amends of the 2012 Champions League T20 flop. A change in format had been set for more fierce competition with each squad facing off before the semifinals. The slightest of errors will cost Champs and Challengers alike in the quest for CT20 and Champions League glory.

Proudest Moments For US Cricket 2011-2012

By Dyon Ravello

The 2012 season began with the Public Schools Athletic League, Spring Cricket. Like the game here on the North American continent, PSAL emphasizes that cricket deserves to be part of the American Culture. With schools across the boroughs of New York City contesting the nation’s premier high school cricket tournament. The challengers came from Brooklyn, Manhattan and even as far as the Bronx. From a pool of 26 teams, Long Island City High of West and John Adams of South meet in a true battle for the King of Queens.

Allrounder Sajib Salam proved the difference for his troop as they top the Spartans led by the prolific Troy Mars. Both Salam and Mar were integral to their team’s quest with both players figure with bat and ball. Mars tonned 197 and 170 odd to lead the batting aggregates. Salam was not out tonned as he had centuries of his own. Salam was the better man with ball in hand. Salam’s pinpoint Sunil Narine likes spin trumped Mars in the wickets column. Mars’ off break with crucial at the beginning of the innings retard any momentum the opposition attempted to generate. Vellocricket commends both Long Island City High and John Adams Spartans on their feats in PSAL cricket 2012. Similarly Sajib Salam and Troy Mars were the standout during the PSAL cricket season.

Amid the PSAL action the club cricket began across the New York Cricket Region. Brooklyn, Metropolitan, American, Commonwealth and Eastern American all held contest in the year of the dragon. In the preseason Millat Sports hosted an invitation Twenty 20 tournament with Challengers lifting the seasons first silverware. As the summer frenzy sizzled the nations meet for the Roy Sweeney Benefit. New York XI, practically a second XI showed its worth to eliminate tournament favorites Guyana. Normalcy was restored as Jamaica thumped the New Yorkers to win the Final.

Brooklyn Panthers velloCricket Team of the Year 2012

New York Cricket Academy hosted its first Sixes Tournament with eight teams participating. Troy Mars was among the headlines again scoring 52 not out for Americas Cricket Academy in the tournament opener. But the day would belong to the Stallions who proved to have more desire than Liberty SC to take the trophy. Stallions with a true team effort in the 27 run win as inaugural Sixes Champions.

The United States of America Cricket Umpires Association (USACUA) held its first annual memorial match. The officials met the administration, New York Cricket Region, (NYCR) with the Twenty 20 affair going down to the wire. Jacob Emmanuel and Dhaval Patel provide the momentum as the NYCR closed on 123. USACUA played a mixed bag of caution and aggression to combat the opponents. NYCR’s skipper Dyon Ravello completed two accurate throws to find the USACUA batsmen short. Ravello bowling offspin accounted for three wickets, with Shoaib Mustaq being the key dismissal. Mustaq threaten to take the game away with his cavalier stroke play but held out off Ravello. The drama did not end there as the Officials grinded the Admin with Ricketts holding the tail together. The Officials held on to a narrow one wicket win for Mr Owen Roberts and Mr Jerry Kishun.

From school play to schools out, the NYPD United Cricket League provide a natural succession to the PSAL through the summer vacation. Twelve club teams participated attempting to gain the coveted COP Ray Kelly trophy. The usual suspects Lycans, Stallions, Dragons and MMZ Superstars among the main contenders. Superstar remained the only undefeated team at the end of the group phase as Dragons needed an 11th hour wins to stay alive in the tournament. All tournament Trinson Carmichael imposed his blade on all the COP’s bowlers. Carmichael’s disdain was most distinct in the knock out phase with the earlier struggling Dragons featuring as run away winners on the final day. Along side Carmichael, Prashant Nair, Syed, Sajib Salam, were deserving of recognition. Carmichael out batted all comers to top the aggregate. Nair scored 204 runs only to be dismissed once, to average as much, miles ahead of the field. Syed was the most consistent among wicketkeeper batsmen. Salam’s feat with the ball was vital to his second champions of the season with the Dragons.

On to the open events, In the Metropolitan Cricket League (MCL), Westbury lifted the League trophy turning back Progressive. In the Eastern American Cricket Association (EACA), ACS Everest defeated Atlantis thrice to regain the Power 40 crown. Everest not only recovered the Power 40 crown but also stomped home with the Blitz T20 prize as well as, to be the undisputed EACA winners on all fronts. The season ended with Team USA advancing in World League play to Division III finishing second behind Nepal in Division IX. Bedessee Destroyers returned to winners row after a 24-month drought dating back to their Radiant Info T20 Triumph in 2010. In Brooklyn, Panthers emulated their EACA counterpart Everest, winning League and T20. However, Brooklyn Panthers exceeded all others taking home the knockout title to finish the season as treble winners, a fitting finish for team of the year.

Officials who made the season worthwhile were Fitzroy Hayles the USACUA President, along side USACUA Training officer Mohammed Baksh, Umpires Coordinator Steven Kalloo and Carl Patrick. The Late Douglas was recognized for his tireless four decades of officiating as an Umpire, unfortunately he departed this season. From the NYCR John Wilson, Lester Hooper, Venelda Wallace, Kris Prasad and Nigel Harper work diligently to ensure the success of youth and women tournaments hosted by the region. Ricky Kissoon, lead way as coach of the New York Youth Selection during this past season. Kissoon was rewarded with a nomination to the USACA Youth Committee.

In the media, Mark Audain’s camera was as sharp as any other capturing event around the various leagues. John Aaron, Shivnan Ramjattan, Kriti Mohan, Danesh Deonarain, Kerk Higgins, Raheel Khan, Omaid Shuja and Sheik Mohammed all played an integral role in covering the sport we have all grown to adore.

Happy Holidays to all for the velloCricket family, as we look forward to a prosperous 2013 season.

Trinson Carmichael played a pivotal role in NYYCC’s success during its inaugural season

The players will be rewarded for their outstanding efforts during the 2012 cricket season, participating in the American Cricket League. New York Youth Cricket Club won the Steve Holder Zone with a record of 11 wins and 3 losses.  Unfortunately they were not afforded the opportunity to achieve their goal of a championship, as the competition was aborted as a result of a lawsuit filed against the league.

If one were to include friendly games played during 2012, the club’s record would be 16 wins and 4 losses. It was a truly outstanding performance during the year, considering the New York Youth Cricket Club players range in age from 14 to 20 years, and the youngsters played against adult cricketers.

The following New York Youth Cricket Club members have been nominated for awards:
Rafeek Nazeer, Omar Afridi, Randall Wilson, Trinson Carmichael, Syed Hussain, Chris Singh, Trevor Singh, Abdullah Afridi, Himalaya Darji, Ryan Persaud, Elliott Bedessee, Keifer Phils, Michael Katwaroo, Chetram Persaud, Surrendra Singh, Andre Koulen.

Other nominees are Troy Mars, Trevis Ross and Clifford Hamilton. The Manager, Clifford Hinds and Coach Milton Pydanna are expecting all parents and supporters to attend and support this remarkable and very successful youth initiative.

Amsterdam, Stanislaus Steer NY Destroyers to US Open T20 Semis

by Dyon Ravello,

Following a successful opening day with two wins, NY Destroyers made light work of Dulles CC to top Group Two . Batting first Dulles were limited to 90 for 8. W Aslam was the most resistant scoring 36 with three sixes and two boundaries. A Roy had a cameo of 18 and former Destroyer Romeno Deane 11. The wickets were shared among the bowler with skipper Kevin Darlington sneered 2/13, Alex Amsterdam had 1/2, Neil Mc Garrell 1/16 and Keon Lake 1/22. Dulles were plagued by a communication issue at the crease, resulting in three batsmen being dismissed via the run out route.

Amsterdam was consistent with the Bat and Ball for Atlantis on the opening day of Play in the EACA 2012 T20 Blitz

Amsterdam had been the go to man for Destroyers at the 2012 US Open T20 with both bat and ball

In reply Sharaz Baksh got the chase on the road with a pair of sixes and a boundary before falling for 17. Quasen Alfred continued his miserable run with a golden duck. As did Nicholas Stanford would failed to score facing a single delivery. From 25 for 3 in the fifth over Amsterdam (29) and Kaveshwar Bridgepaul (32) ensure that the already wounded Dulles were buried. Both batsmen stroked three boundaries each with Bridgepaul clearing the ropes on two occasions, and Amsterdam once. Destroyers completing a commanding seven wicket win to qualify from Group two.

Friday served up confirmation, with Saturday being the day of elimination. Destroyer drew a pre-qualifier with Altanta Paramveers. As was the trend of the group phase, the Destroyers’ opposition batted first. D Smith start the innings in a flurry with a couple sixes and a boundary to score 17 off 11 balls. Altanta lost the plot slumping from 26/1 to 54/7. Only a 32 run eighth wicket stand between Sanjeev (20) and G Wallace (15) delayed the destruction. After 18.2 overs Altanta had mustered 101 the highest score against the Destroyers in this tourney to date. Darlington lead from the front with 3/10, Amsterdam continued his consistency with 2/14, with Twain Walters 2/29  aided by Hemant Punoo and Neil Mc Garrell with a wicket each.

NY Destroyers resumed with a healthy start with the opening pair posting 32 off just 14 balls. Following the initial whirlwind stand four wickets fell for nine runs in 2.1 overs. Sean Stanislaus and Zaheer Saffie combined for yet another unbeaten stand, yielding 58 runs to take the Destroyer to the quarterfinals. Both Stanislaus (32) and Saffie (24) struck three boundaries with the former adding a maximum.

Quarters Under Lights Against Second Seed Tigers

On to the quarters under lights Destroyers meet is US laden Washington Tigers. Tigers boosting current and former US national players batted first, game five and the Destroyers were yet to take first strike. The tempo followed the trend of the previous matches with the NY bowling gripping the Tigers. A Dawood carved out 30 with four boundaries and a six, with A Thragrajan chipping in with 14. Alex Amsterdam returned 3/13 to lead the assault, with Mc Garrell sneering 2/6 and Darlington 2/16. Tigers a far cry from their national ability all out for 76 in 16.4 overs.

Like its bowling pattern, Destroyers replicated the batting sequence which yielded success thus far. Quasen Alfred was forced to retire within the first over. As H Kurmalal and Nicholas Stanford were both dismissed giving the Tigers a snicker of hope at 12 for 2. In the group phase Amsterdam had combine with Bridgepaul as Stanislaus rallied with Saffie. This time Amsterdam scored an unbeaten score which included three boundaries. Stanislaus stroked four boundaries in his knock of 27 to complete an eight wicket win and to advance to the semifinal.

NY Destroyers Open With 2 Wins

NY Destroyers opened its 2012 US Open T20 with a couple of victories on day one. Following the opening ceremony Destroyers meet familiar opposition in the form of Fooglies. Fooglies batting first boost by national batsmen Aditya Mishra and Aditya Thyagarajan looked set to pose a threat to the New Yorkers.

Batting first Fooglies were restricted by the experienced Destroyers attack. Only Sidarth Mehta with 28 show as real fight, with Mishra (12) and M Asad (14) the other batsmen to reach double digits. It was skipper Kevin Darlington, who got the ball rolling with two early strikes for a return of 3-0-6-2. Zaheer Saffie 3/20 and Niel Mc Garrell the pick of the bowlers with 3.5-0-5-3, limiting the Fooglies to a meagre 85 runs after 17 overs.

Nicholas Stanford scored 38* for NY Destroyers on Day One at US Open T20 2012

Set 4.30 runs per over Destroyers had to wrestle the winter rust as they lost six wickets on the way. Mc Garrell completed an all-rounder performance to remain unbeaten on 20 with former USA youth captain Hemant Punoo performed the sheet anchor duty scoring 13 not out to complete the four wicket win. Punoo completed his bowling spell with 4-0-14-0 economical return on the day. For Fooglies M Nisar 2/10, N Jamali 2/18 and P Suri 2/27 made the initial inroads.

On to game two NY Destroyers meet Orlando Thunder. Thunder took first striker like Fooglies and they too had their momentum stymied. Z Baig scored 48 but none of his other team mate could clap their bats on the ball to summon the thunder. Destroyers shared the wickets among the five bowler with Andre Kirton leading the pack with 3/26, Mc Garrell 2/5, Punoo 2/15, Saffie 2/35 and Darlington 1/9. Thunder all out for 90 in 17.3 overs without the strike of lightning.

Destroyers looked like repeating the false start of game one when the lost both openers by the fifth over. But Nicholas Stanford (38) and Alex Amsterdam  (15) on US Open debut , completed the job for a thumping eight wicket win. Destroyers will seek to top Group two when they meet Dulles CC at Tradewinds from 9 am on Friday 7th.
