EACA Match of The Week: Richmond Hill’s Bess Shock Protestant Everest

By Dyon Ravello
As predicted Richmond Hill’s encounter with league leaders ACS/Everest did not fail to be  a steamy encounter in the sweltering heat at the Cage. Everest won the toss and inserted Richmond Hill to take first strike. Everest imploring their attacking tactics with two leg slips for veteran left arm seamer Saheed Amin. That paid immediate dividends as as Rayo Sankar was caught by Zamin Amin in the close catching position down the leg, a peculiar but proven ACS strategy. Debo Sankar played a few expansives shots as he attempted to counteract the spot on bowling from Saheed and new ball partner Trevor Walke. Debo chipping, going for another one over the top played over the delivery to lose his off stump. Dhaniram Seepersaud given another opportunity up the order, looked the part taking the fight to Walke and Saheed. Seepersaud witnessed Zaheer Sadloo bowled by the faintest of contact as the bail fell in a delayed motion. Seepersaud’s cameo would come to an end as he held out to Saheed caught at long on by Gregory Sewdial for 22. Richmond Hill four down on their own ground at the first drinks break.

Bess did not make an impact with the ball but his 72 not out was the game changer against Everest for Richmond Hill

On the resumption following Saheed and Walke completing their eight over quota unchanged, Karan Ganesh struck another blow with his first delivery as Shameer Sadloo edged to wicket keeper Tamesh Balwant. Prashad Mahadeo was joined by Mahendra Seeram as they attempted to stem the procession to and fro, but Ganesh induced another error as Seeram offered a simple catch to cover. Mahadeo thumped on anything loose before he was bowled by Aun Merchant playing across the line for 27. Deryck Mac Donald, and Brandon Bess consolidate batting some 13 overs together to absorb the ACS pressure. Mac Donald was caught on the cover boundary by Merchant off the newest addition to the Everest line up, pacer Fahad Shahnawaz. Richmond Hill were rewarded for their patience as Bess capitalize stroking six huge sixes and four fours as he remained unbeaten on 72. In the penultimate over Merchant had no answer as Bess belt three of his maximums to tarnish the pacers returns. Roderick Lovell supported the West Indian Test bowler with two boundaries and a six, Richmond hill recovering from a precarious position to post a competitive total of 208/8. ACS were led by captain Karan bowling 8-1-15-2, Saheed Amin 8-1-20-2 and Walke 8-1-42-2.

Following the impressive start in the field Everest were disappointed that the plans were not executed through to the end as they chased at least 30 runs more than they would have bargained for. Bess was anything from the best with the ball as he continued to struggle with wides sprayed across the pitch. At the other end First Class pacer Lovell took care of Merchant caught at first slip by Shameer of a lifting delivery. Bess searching for his rhythm, line and length found himself struggling as he flared up a foot injury. Bess delivered two full pitched deliveries over the waist, but without causing danger to the batsmen. Following the second fault Bess complained of his discomfort as the umpires consulted but did not suspend the bowler for the rest of the match as the batsman were not in danger with the wide deliveries. Mahendra Seeram replaced Bess with distinction as he kept the explosive Gregory Sewdial in check. Sewdial pounced on the short and wide deliveries from Lovell as he drove over cover point. Seeram aka “Sunil” induced an edge for Mac Donald to accept at slip to remove the former US youth captain Sewdial.

Karan Ganesh came to the crease already in second gear as he took advantage of Seeram so much so he had to be replaced. Ganesh played a faulty pull off Lovell but the chance fell in no man’s land between mid off and the bowler. Ganesh playing the pull a second time failed again edging to wicket keeper Mahadeo. Richmond Hill Skipper Ramphal Bactowar replaced Seeram but he too had his share of disdain as opener Steve Nowrangilall took 14 runs of Bactowar’s first over. Seeram returned and accounted for Nowrangilall caught at deep cover for 29. Everest losing their fourth wicket following the first drinks break with the match evenly poised. Bess returned in  the 18th over as Ganesh clarified the grounds on which Bess was allowed to continue bowling in the match . Bess seemed a bit more compact as he found the edgy of Amjad Khan down the leg for Mahadeo to complete the dismissal. Seeram completed his spell with another scalp Balwant caught at slip by Mac Donald. At the fall of Balwant the sixth wicket Everest Skipper Ganesh informed the umpires that they were playing the game under protest, in reference to Bess being allowed to return to bowl.

Zamin Amin and Terry Hastoo mixed quick running with power stroke-play to counter the slide. Zamin took ten off Bess with a six and a four to square leg as the quick was immediately removed from the attack.  Left arm orthodox Shameer Sadloo accounted for Hastoo caught at point by substitute Deoram Puran for a cameo of 28. With Shameer trapping Zamin in front for 20 to sap the ACS hopes. Saheed survived another convincing appeal the very next ball from Shameer, with Shahnawaz looking able of pulling of an upset for his side. Shameer would return to have is his man leg before with no doubt this time. Trevor Walke survived another convincing appeal from Shameer’s bowling. Walke’s heroic with the ball against Atlantis was not replicated with the bat as he scoop an easy catch to Zaheer Sadloo off Seepersaud. Everest all out for 167 in 34.4 overs, playing under protest stating that Bess had no grounds to return to bowl. Everest had even included an addendum to the protest, claiming Bess and Shameer were not wearing the correct uniform. Bess and Shameer both wore green shirts identical to the remaining members of the team with the textile being the most notable difference. Shahnawaz remained unbeaten on 22 as Shameer 6-0-19-3, Mahendra Seeram 8-0-31-3 and Roderick Lovell 8-0-40-2 with key strikes to limited the ACS chase. Brandon Bess  72 runs with the bat causing a stir with the ball more of a technical nature, nonetheless the match winner on the day.

Richmond Hill looking to keep up the pressure in the race to the semifinals maintaining third spot on 43 points.  Both Big Apple and Atlantis returned to winning ways after they both dropped points to Richmond Hill and Everest respectively. Atlantis occupy fourth and Big Apple fifth both on 40 points with run rate as the tie break. MMZ have drawn level on points with Everest after defeating Hillside. MMZ return to the Cage where the chased 284 to beat Big Apple, in another high intensity affair against Richmond Hill who look like setting a fortress at Foch. Everest journey to Brentwood to  play Long Island United who have no chance of advancing. Atlantis host cellar place Liberty at Hecksher and Big Apple look to keep the pressure on when the play the dangerous Hillside.

New York 2 Atlantic 1 as U21 Fail

By Dyon Ravello,

New York Region hosted Tristate neighbors Atlantic Region in a triple header at Marine Park, Brooklyn on Saturday August 4th 2012. The days events included matches up between the U-15, U-18 and U-21 selections from both regions. When the U-18 played New York were ruthless as they racked up an impressive 330 for 5 off 40 overs. Amarnauth Persaud renewed his form scoring 96. Persaud played flawless throughout his innings after he was given a life early in the innings when he top edged to square leg with neither wicketkeeper or square leg able to complete the dismissal from the bowling of women’s player Emmerson.

US Youth Batsman Amarnauth Persaud scored 96 for New York over Atlantic Region to be the best batsman on the day

Persaud made full use of the life and never look back as he accelerated, pushing his partner Zayeb Tariq converting long singles into twos. Persaud raced past fifty as he closed in on the triple digit milestone. Persaud would succumb to a low full toss from Waqas falling a mere four runs short of a hundred. Tariq was not a spectator as he played his shots in getting to 74, with Brandon Boodoo  playing a cameo for 42 and Troy Mars scoring 52 opening the batting to set the tone.

New York U-18 needing to defending 331 at a rate of 8.28 per over, attacked opening pair with seamers Chris Singh and Bilal Khan. Singh struck first to remove Ahsan Riaz, as Bilal accounted for the dangerous Waqas bowled and caught by the 10th over. Spinners Sajeeb Salam and Hamza Rana were introduced in tandem to wreck Atlantic at the Marine for 124. Atlantic losing by 206 runs with only Sharma Suhkdeo 34 and Michael Noble 24 able to negate the threat of Rana’s three wicket bag and Salam’s four wicket haul.

New York u-15 coached by Rudy John were as ruthless as their U-18 counterparts as they routed Atlantic for 91. Wicket keeper Surrendra Singh entrusted with the ball repaid the favor to be pick of the bowlers with three wickets, Nicholas Harripersaud had two and Joel Boodoo was economically impressive with 4-3-1-2 the solitary run a wide. Surrendra and Usman Ashraf completed the 10 wicket victory for the home side Ashraf scored 28 with extras being the top score.

New York 2-0 up and on to the main event!

Atlantic U-21 batted first with opener C Vantull scoring 33 and all rounder A. Pathak 43. New York restricted Atlantic to 175 all out with left arm orthodox bowler Trinson Carmichael scalping 4 for 23, and Faisal Taj 2 for 17. Requiring a seemingly straight forward 3.52 runs per over in a fifty over affair New York could do no wrong. Skipper Azurdeen Mohammed led the charge opening the batting, scoring 29. As the match fluctuated Atlantic region began to grip their opponents with spin twin Waleed Karimullah and A. Pathak pegging the New Yorkers. Terrance Madramootoo played a cameo for 24 by but after his partnership with Trinson Carmichael, New York seem to run out of ideas as the spin pressure wrapped up bind for  a 16 run victory. New York all out for 159 with Karimullah 5 for 33 and Pathak 4 for 20.

The days event were completed with the presentation ceremony as Surrendra Singh, Nicholas Harripersaud and Shahzad Mohammed being rewarded for their effort at the U-15 level. Amarnauth Persaud, Hamza Rana and Sajeeb Salam were the best performers on the day in U-18 play as Altantic swept the U 21 prizes with Karimullah, Pathak and Vantull the recipients. Members of the New York Region were proud of the days accomplishment as they look forward August 24th return leg to New Jersey. A pledge was made to maintain regional play despite the absence of USACA sanctioned events. A call was made to include the Northeast Region, which would complete a truly Tri-State regional series. Notable attendees include US national selector Selwyn Ceasar, former national batsman Albert Texiera, New York Volunteer Coach Ricky Kisson, Atlantic Region Coach Basil Butcher Jr., Brooklyn Cricket League President John Wilson, William White of the Caribbean Life community newspaper among others

By Dyon Ravello,

The past two weekends have seen humdingers at the Cage, the venue with the sobriquet synonymous with WWE or UFC will again welcome the fanfare of another grudge match. Big Apple had lost in the two previous encounters against Meten Meer Zorg and Richmond Hill, as home team Richmond Hill welcome perennial leaders ACS/Everest. Richmond Hill fortified with the additions of the first class duo in Brandon Best and Roderick Lovell, with be looking to upset Everest as they attempt to continue to surge up the table. Everest has maintained their supremacy this season with a solitary blemish turning back all comers with only Big Apple sturdy enough to form a dent in the Everest armor.

Meten Meer Zorg face Hillside as them try to keep pace with Everest. Hillside will be in search of crucial points in the hunt for a semifinal spot. Atlantis will look to return to winning ways when this host  struggling Long Island United. Big Apple with two consecutive defeats will look to pounce on cellar side Liberty. In Division B only two matches are carded with second place Arsenal playing fourth place Falcons in what should be a competitive affair. HD Stop Pause For Ah Cause in T&T Celebrations

By Dyon Ravello,

Melbourne New York Alliance kicked off  Trinidad and Tobago’s 50th  Independence Celebration in conjunction with the Trinidad and Tobago Consulate General. The weekend of celebrations began on Friday 3rd August with Windball Cricket. Windball cricket is a popular past time of both the local and native Trinibagonian community. HD United won the toss against Pause for ah Cause taking first strike. On hand to open the Celebrations were Consular General Mrs. Rudrawatee Nan Ramgoolam and Trinidad and Tobago Sports Ambassador Daren Ganga.

HD had got of to a strong start with Steve Samuels taking a liking to the bowling of Sunil Maraj. At the other end Chief pegged the HD batting with two wickets and a run out by Daryl Roopchand. Samuels found a similarly aggressive partner in Prem and the pair returned HD on course. Samuels going for another maximum held out on the boundary scoring 26 at a strike rate of 130.00. Prem continued his cause as he did not pause, with the late overs approaching. Prem held out to long on for a top score of 34, as HD captain Ralph made sure of an imposing score as 13 runs came off the last over, HD 114/8 in 14 overs.

Pause For Ah Cause began their reply in cavalier fashion with Daryl Roopchand hitting the very first delivery over the mid wicket boundary. Roopchand picked up a single before dispatching another maximum, as if that was not enough for Ravello, Roopchand completed the over with another heave this time straight back over the bowler to take 20 runs off the first over. Ryan replaced Ravello with immediate success as he bowled Shashi. Daryl would partner with the dangerous Reagan batting at number four as Pause got to 52/2. The introduction of Daniel proved a vital change as he removed Roopchand bowled for 31. Daniel then accounted for Reagan caught at square leg, Reagan infuriated with his dismissal appealing that the fieldsman had ran over the boundary.

That dismissal changed the complexion of the match with Ravello returning to redeem himself with a wicket in the tenth over. Ravello continued to be a main part of the action as he saved a six on the long on boundary, instead of holding the catch and falling into the boundary. In the penultimate over Ravello repeated the feat a second time and even went one better as Ralph held the catch off the rebound giving Daniel his fourth wicket. With the run rate set at 25 in the last over, Pause failed to score off the bat as HD huddled with two slips among two other close catching fielders. HD completing the victory over Pause For Ah Cause to open New York leg of Trinidad and Tobago’s Independence celebration.

The fanfare continues on Saturday with two more cricket matches this time with the use of the hard cricket ball instead of the windball (tennis ball).  Followed by soccer/football on Sunday, the action continues from 9 am at Baisley Pond Park, Queens. Saturday’s main attraction with see the New York community welcoming another Trinidad and Tobago Sports Ambassador, World Record Holder Brian Lara.

Its a Walke in the park for Everest/ACS

by John L. Aaron
Uneven surface causes an uneven match-ending injury
It was not exactly a walk over victory at Heckscher State Park last Sunday, but veteran pacer Trevor Walke certainly helped Everest/ACS stride to a 9-2 record in the EACA 2012 Division A Power40 tournament. Trevor Walke grabbed five Atlantis wickets for 35 runs off his eight overs, as though it was taking candy from a baby. However, it was Atlantis’ Kavishwar Bridgepaul who literally stumbled and fell, when he missed his footing on the edge of the recently resurfaced pitch at Heckscher. The hard-hitting batsman, along with Hugh Craig was the last pair at the crease and were in pursuit of 34 runs from 10 overs to ensure an Atlantis victory over Everest/ACS, when the mishap occurred and he was unable to complete the run, resulting in him retiring hurt to end the game.

Bridgepaul fight upstaged by injury

Winning the toss and inviting Everest/ACS to take first strike, Atlantis without its skipperPrashanth Nair, opener Jason Greaves, pacer Casper Davis Jr., and front-line wicketkeeper Ryan Sukhdeo, knew they had their work cut out for them. Atlantis struck with the score at 26, with 20 of those runs belonging to S. Nowrangalall (4x4s). His quick-fire knock came off 10 deliveries, before he was caught off the bowling of Nicholas Standford. Everest/ACS’ second-wicket partnership of 71 between Greg Sewdial 41 (1×6, 4x4s) and opener A. Merchant, 32 would steady the Everest/ACS inning, as the next four wickets would fall for the addition of 41 runs and in the 28th over. Tamesh Balwant with a steadfast knock of 38 off 45 balls and veteran Terry Hastoo with 17 not out would see Everest/ACS reach 210 for 9 in the 40th over.

The Everest/ACS wickets fell at 26, 107, 111, 115, 148, 178, 180, 192 and 194. Atlantis’ Keon Lake with figures of 8-0-31-4 was the pick of the bowlers, followed by Steven Jacobs 8-0-29-2 and acting skipper Nicholas Standford, Jermaine Horatio and Alex Amsterdam grabbing one wicket each in the 2 hours 55 minutes inning.
Atlantis in reply was off to decent start posting 40 runs before Henderson Blades (10), would become the first victim of the veteran pacer Trevor Walke. Skipper Nicholas Standford would be greeted with a first ball duck, caught compliments of Mr. Walke. Shawn Mason would stick around for 20 deliveries hitting a well-made 40 in his best effort of the season, thus far. His knock included 5x4s and 2x6s, before he gave Walke his third wicket with the Atlantis score at 65. Seven runs later Alex Amsterdam would become Walke’s fourth scalp, having contributed only four runs, as Steven Jacobs tried to figure Walke out at one end, while Shaheed Amin (8-0-65-1) was being clobbered at the other end. However, it would be Everest/ACS’ skipper Karan Ganesh who would get the experienced Jacobs caught and bowled for a painstaking contribution of 29 off 48 deliveries. Atlantis would go on to lose its first six wickets for 90 runs as a rout loomed. Ron Andrew with eight runs would be Trevor Walke’s fifth victim for the day, as Atlantis limped to 148 for 8 in the 25th over. However, with Kavishwar Bridgepaul stroking the ball very well but running out of partners, Atlantis had the overs and the power of Bridgepaul, but was looking for someone to stay with the hard-hitting right-hander. As the batsmen rotated the strike, Bridgepaul was unrelenting on the Everest/ACS’ bowlers hitting 2x6s and 5x4s in his knock of 41. Bridgepaul and the very dependable Hugh Craig as the last man in appeared to quickly develop an understanding of the mathematical equation facing them.  However, fate would favor Everest/ACS and remove any threat of the Atlantis last pair making the 34 runs needed off the final 9.5 overs for the victory. With Karan Ganesh’s first delivery of his seventh over, Bridgepaul called for a single and took off, barely crossing with Craig before twisting his ankle on the covered edge of the recently paved pitch. The batsman went down heavily and was unable to complete the single as an Everest/ACS fielder realizing what had happened simply took a quick courteous glance at Bridgepaul, before flipping off one bail of the exposed wicket to run-out the hapless batsman, and end the match.
The match was not expected to be a walk in the park for either team, but neither could have imagined that was the way it would end. However, the major credit must go to the veteran and wily pacer Trevor Walke for scalping five of Atlantis’ top-order six batsmen. A. Merchant had figures of 5-1-21-2, while Shaheed Amin and his brother Zamin each grabbed one wicket, with the Atlantis wickets falling at 40, 40, 65, 72, 83, 90, 113, 148 and 177.
As of this posting, Kavishwar Bridgepaul appears to have suffered only a very bad sprain of his right-ankle. X-rays taken showed no broken bones.
Everest/ACS now stands at 9-1, while Atlantis is at 7-2. Everest/ACS plays Richmond Hill this Sunday in The Cage at Baisley Pond Park in Queens, while Atlantis hosts Long Island United at Heckscher State Park. A previously postponed Atlantis vs. Big Apple match is slated for this Saturday. The venue is yet to be determined. One other result, Hillside maintained their quest to challenge for a semifinal berth with a victory over Long Island United. Hillside meet Meten Meer Zorg at Bay Park.

Queensbury shock Travel Treat

By Dyon Ravello,

With rains about, Brooklyn League reschedule three matches at Marine Park on Saturday, July 28th. The teams affected by the change were, Queensbury, Panthers     Diplomats, Imperial, Cavaliers and Middlesex. In a strange decision the BCL committee postponed the match till August 19th. Normally rained out matches would yield each team four point unlike the usual ten for a win. Meanwhile Travel Treat stayed close on the heels of the leaders Panther with a win against Wanderers. Travel Treat are almost certain of a place in the League semifinals.

In Sundays Matches Queenbury shock a depleted Travel Treat to record only their second win of the season, to mirror fellow table proppers, Wanderers and Diplomats with two victories each. Cavaliers topped Diplomats to stay the in the hunt, as Middlesex, routed the inconsistent Imperial to moved close to confirming there semifinal berth. Sheffield gave their campaign a much needed life line as they whipped Wanderers.

With only four rounds remaining, Panthers, Travel Treat and Middlesex will be confidence for a playoff spot. The Cellar trio of Diplomats, Queensbury, and Wanderers as practically eliminated as only math or a miracle would lift any team to the top of standings. The excitement lies in the middle of the table with Sheffield, Imperial and Cavaliers. Cavaliers and Imperial have the luxury of the August 19th fixtures providing there is no rain. Sheffield have the toughest of the draws with matches against leaders Panthers on August 5th and back to back matches against Middlesex the following week.

Cavaliers with three matches face Imperial in what should be a intense affair on the August 11th. Cavaliers  play the less imposing Wanderers on 12th and meet Middlesex on the 19th. Imperial has the best draw of the lot with Travel Travel on the 5th, Cavaliers, Panther on 12th and Diplomats scheduled for the 19th,
