Unstoppable Panthers Roll On in Brooklyn

by Dyon Ravelllo

Panthers continued their impeccable run with two victories last weekend as they edged Imperial by 16 runs and Diplomats by three wickets.  On Saturday Diplomats record their second win of the season as they got past fellow stragglers Wanderers by 86 runs. Whille Cavaliers (223/7) notched up a convincing 126 run victory against Queensbury.

On Sunday Panthers lost seven wickets as they chased 183 set by Diplomats, to go “nine and o” on the season. Travel Treat stayed close on the heels of Panther as they lost 4 wickets to get past Cavaliers’ 91 to win by six wickets and maintain their second spot.

Middlesex batted first against Wanderers scoring 232/4 in 35 overs. Joseph Ledwridge led the charge with 75 not out, with support coming from Andre Kirton (43) and Freddie Roopchand (41). Bowling for Wanderers George Sutherland had 2/24, Leon Hyde 1/47 and Shane Anthony 1/52. Wanderers fancied their chances getting to 173/7 to lose by 59 runs. Sutherland followed up his bowling effort scoring 60 with the bat. Middlesex kept Wanderers in check with Mark Audain 2/18 and Claymont Rose 2/36.

What was expected to be a grudge match between Sheffield and Imperial turned out to be a very pedestrian affair. Imperial racked up a mammoth 235/3 off 28 overs on the back of 94 by veteran batsman Roy Bryan. Only Peter Persaud with two wickets and Dellon Moffat with one induced any faults in the Imperial batting. Trouble set in early as Glen Hall was dismissed in the first over for four, 4/1. Akeem Dodson  (26) and Moffat (26) took the attack to the bowlers keeping the run rate close to the asking rate. At 51 Sheffield captain Dodson went caught at point and the rate began to dip and never recovered as wickets fell at regular intervals. Sheffield eventual closed on 103 to lose by 132 runs allowing Imperial to draw level on points in the battled for fourth.

Saud Hussain anchored MMZ to a Narrow win over Falcons.

The first round of EACA Power 40 came to a close on Sunday 24th June. The final round was not without its fanfare or tense moments as Falcons hosted Meter Meer Zorg at Flushing . Falcons won the toss, taking the opportunity to have first strike. Fast Medium bowler Amarnauth Persaud got in the action earlier as he bowled opener Rajendra Khan and captain Zulifikar Ali. At the other end J. Hardeen played resourcefully as he attempted to keep his team on course. Persaud’s new ball partner Rocky Kowchai was not absent from the action as he removed opener Mahindra Harprashad (17), Komal Shamsundar and Manoj Shamsundar.

Hardeen’s cameo came to an end leg before to Ramdiall for 24 with MMZ creating and opening into the Falcons tail. However, they were denied immediate success as Lakeram Mohan and J Karan put together a consolidating partnership. It was Mohan attempting to increase the run rate only to be caught at straight mid wicket for 27. That dismissal created a real opportunity as Zaaid Majeed had Karan caught for 25 and had wickets 9 and 10 all timbers. Falcons all out for 146 in 29 overs. Majeed led the attack with 3/21, Kowchai 3/21 and Persaud 2/32.

Needing less than four runs per over for what would have been predicted as another cruise home, got off to the most disastrous starts as Captain Azurdeen Mohammed was run out trying to pick up a quick single off a fumble in the covers. Fellow opener Ken Nandkumar rue the loss and knew he would have to make up for the err. Nandkumar took the attack to Falcons but he would see the back of Baksh as he was caught at square leg off Komal. Then Nandkumar (23) would play one shot too many as Komal accounted for the disturbance of his stumps.

Reeling with three wickets down in only four overs MMZ were now at the mercy of the Falcon’s claw.  Manoj accounted for Travis Ross with Kumar Hemnauth dismissing Persaud in the very next over. Hemnauth would again induce the edge but this time wicketkeeper Z. Ali could not hold on giving Saud Hussain first ball chance. That miss would count to be a costly one, as Hussain played the waiting game as he anchor his team. The procession of wickets slowed be nonetheless continued, Majeed, Ejaz Asgarally and Kowchai were all victims as Falcons looked to press home the advantage.

Batting at number 10, Rawle Hoyte (24*) played his usual “no non-sense” innings to complement Hussain’s steady approach. The pair mixed aggression with cautious taking the single as well as pouncing on the odd boundary. Their efforts were more than sufficient as Falcons ran out of tricks to pry the last two wickets. MMZ recovering at the depth to seek home from a very precarious position. In such a low scoring affair Hussain’s (27*) rearguard innings was undoubtedly the game changer.  MMZ now move on to  EACA Divison A alongside Hillside, Big Apple, and LIUCC from Zone II as Falcons, All Stars, Arsenal and Victory will vie for Division B bragging rights.

Noble Spearheads Another LSC Victory

Micheal Noble stroked an unbeaten 78 to follow up his 6th round 119 to spearhead the Achievers Real Estate NY Inc. sponsored Liberty Sports Club fourth win of the 2012 EACA Power40 season. For the second weekend in a row the LSC skipper anchored a successful run chase to deliver his team a victory against Enmore Cricket Club.

Liberty SC won the toss and elected to field first at Flushing II, a decision which proved fruitful when opening bowler Imtiaz ‘Tizzle’ Hassan struck early to remove Enmore Cricket Club’s opening pair with less than 10 runs on the board.

Teryll Datt (25) and Chaman Ramdial (22) would set about a cautious rebuilding operation but patience ran dry when Datt got stumped trying to charge Ramratan Jagnarine. Ramdial followed shortly after holding out to point going after a wide ball outside off stump against the same bowler.

Safraz Ali, who already has three 100’s to his name in the 2012 season, would continue his exceptional  form  with an attacking 51. Veteran, Jerry Persaud, reminded the LSC youngsters of his cricketing exploits as he blasted 25 coming in at number 8 to boost ECC to 166 for 8 off their allotted 35 overs.

Seamer, Terrence ‘Coolie Bai’ Madramootoo, polished off the last three ECC batsmen to get amongst the wickets with Hassan & Jagnarine.

Dilly Khilawan and Andy Harrichan started the LSC chase but Harrichan would fall would fall early to Mahadeo Motana. Dilly and Micheal Noble would cautiously see off opening bowlers Motana and Jerry Persaud who settled on a solid line and length. Restricting the men in blue to 35 after 14 overs ECC was in a solid position with LSC needing just over 6 per over to win the game. The loss of Dilly (21) while trying to up the run rate did not help the efforts.

Noble turned up the scoring rate shortly after, however. Joined by the hard hitting Bose Persaud the pair consolidated the required run rate in an 80 runs partnership. Noble took the lead in the partnership as he struck 7 fours and 2 sixes on his way past his third 50 plus score of the season. Enmore spinners Jason Thomas  and Shivraj Jainarine faced the brunt of the assault as LSC quickly pulled ahead of the par score in the 25th over.

Persaud (28) would fall along with two other LSC wickets before the chase was completed in the 31st over with Noble unbeaten on 78 and Danesh Deonarain on 9. Asif Ali picked up 2 LSC wickets while Motana, Jainaraine & Thomas picked up one wicket each.

Liberty Sports Club will now move on to the Division A in the second stage of the EACA Power40 competition while Enmore CC will compete for the Division B championship. LSC with be joined by Everest, Richmond Hill and Atlantis in the top flight, where they will me MetenMeerZorg, Big Apple, Hillside and LIUCC. Division B will have Enmore, Camelot, Phantom, East Side Warriors, All Stars, Arsenal, Falcons and Victory vying for second class honors.
