Noble, Madramootoo & Mc Donald shine for Liberty SC on the road in Maryland

Liberty Sports Club vs Washington Metro Cricket Board All Star XI over the Memorial Day Weekend

The Achievers Real Estate NY, Inc sponsored Liberty Sports Club spent the 2012 Memorial Day Weekend playing two matches against a Washington Metro Cricket Board All Star XI in Oxen Hill, Maryland. Micheal Noble stared with the bat and ball in the first game played on Saturday while Terrence ‘Coolie Bai’ Madramootoo and Deryck McDonald came up trumps with bat and ball respectively in the second game on Sunday.

Game 1 (35 Over Game on Saturday)

Noble scored 42 and picked up 2 wickets in Game 1

The hosting side, WMCB All Star XI, allowed Liberty Sports Club the option to bat first following the visiting team’s early morning drive down to The Old Line State from New York. Dilly Khilawan and Danesh Deonaran opened the batting for LSC and got the visitors off to a slow but steady start on a sweltering Maryland day. Deonarain would be the first to go for 21 and followed shortly after by Alex Amsterdam.

Dilly battled on to stroke a solid 32. The fall of Amsterdam’s wicket brought Micheal Noble to the crease. Noble held his end as quick wickets were lost,  after Dilly departed, while LSC mid order tried to up the run rate in the 35 over affair.

The WMCB All Star XI bowlers found success against the LSC bats but Noble would counter with an assault of his own as he struck an attractive 42 to guide LSC to 158 all out off of 32.4 overs.

In their chase the WMCB All Stars were given a strong start by openers Karthik Thota & Akash Pathak. The pair posted 58 for the first wicket as they capitalized on the visiting side’s unfamiliarity of the pitch and outfield. Liberty SC would go on to pick up 6 more wickets at frequent interval with Terrence Madramootoo picking up back to back wickets in the final over of his spell of 2 for 15 off 7.

Ashwin Boini had other plans, however, his muscular hitting combined with clever stroke play saw the Washington Metro All Star team home with an over and 3 balls to spare with 3 wickets in hand.

Madramootoo aka Coolie Bai blasted an unbeaten 46 and picked up 1 for 17 in Game 2

At the end of the game the host team recognized Michael Noble for putting up the best individual performance for Liberty Sports.

Game 2 (40 Over Game on Sunday)

Having narrowly lost the first game and having a sense of payback due the LSC team showed up on Sunday at Oxen Hill to take on the WMCB All Star XI in a 40 over encounter. The all stars won the toss and chose to bat but Vijendra Singh would strike early in the second over to start with a wicket maiden. Terrence Madramootoo would continue to spur LSC forward by trapping the number three batsman, Bally Maharaj, LBW in the 5th over. Thota, who posted 23 on Saturday would follow that up with 24 to help the host rebuild after the early wickets.

The hard hitting Mohammed Amir batting at number 5 would change the course of the All Star’s innings as he blasted 44 which included 5 fours and a 6 to help boost his team to 162 all out in the 38th over.

Bowling for Liberty SC Deryck McDonald was the star. McDonald picked up 4 for 28 off of his 8 over allotment which included the wicket of Amir who was looking to take the game away from LSC when Deryck was introduced into the attack. Sohan Dass supported with 2 for 25, Alex Amsterdam 2 for 11 and Terrence bowled an economical 5 overs for 17 runs and 1 scalp. Imtiaz Hassan also bowled 8 economical overs for 25 runs.

Liberty SC Captain presents WMCB Captain with a medal

Liberty SC got off to a shaky start losing openers Shafik Shaw followed by Dilly Khilawan with the score on 8. Danesh Deonarain would play a patient knock to partner Amsterdam as the pair put on 36 before Deonarain was run out. Amsterdam went on to post 38 before he was out bowled shortly after Noble was out caught at short fine leg.

In a spot of bother with the score on 71 for 5 needing 92 more to win off of 22 overs, in stepped Terrence Madramootoo. Following a few cautious overs the appropriately named ‘Hulk’ took full flight into the WMCB all star attack. His first 22 balls yielded 6 runs but from there onwards it only took 19 more balls to blast 40 runs to champion his team to the win.

Terrence, who after the game was honored as LSC best player by the hosts, found support from Vijendra Singh who played an 18 balls 17 runs cameo and Derick McDonald who chipped in with 13 off 15 balls to help seal the victory.

Karan Saini was the pick of the bowlers for the Marylanders with 3 for 21 off his allotted 8 overs.

Post Game

Both teams expressed excitement at the opportunity of playing against each other and thanked each other for a great weekend of cricket. Both the WMCB’s president, Avinash Varma, and Liberty SC Director, Dilly Khilawan, stated the need for a continued relationship between the two organizations. The two teams shared interest in making the Memorial Day weekend games and annual event.

Following each game the host team provided a handsome supply of food and refreshments for both teams and the teams presented memorabilia to each other to mark the occasion.

Liberty SC would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Mr. Varma & Mr. Garnet who made the whole weekend possible.  A special thank you to Mr.  Joey Sadloo is also being extended for playing a key part in allowing Liberty SC to play in the weekend games.

Around the Park: Panthers Complete Hatrick to Reach Final

Panther won three consecutive matches on Memorial Weekend to reach BB Memorial T20  Finals. Panther disposed of Jinnah in the BB T20 quarters on Saturday to meet Bedessee Destroyers on Memorial Day. In between the T20 fanfare Panthers won over Middlesex in the Brooklyn League 40 over tournament. On Sunday  Panthers batted first at Marine Park scoring a 123 of 26.2 overs. Ulfat Shahzad was the main contributor scoring 49 as Middlesex offspinners Joseph Ledwridge and Claymont Rose pegged the Panthers batting with career best 5 for 18 off 5 over, and 6-1-15-3 respectively. In reply Middlesex fell to their first defeat of the season falling 44 runs short scoring 79 with Andre Kirton 25 and Alston Bacchus 22. Nousherwan Adil ripped through the opponents with a potent 4-2-2-4.

Panthers again batting first on Monday this time in BB T20 struck 158 for 6 from the allotted 20 over with Ulfat Shahzad again leading the way with an unbeaten 61 he was supported by Shahbaz with 41 and Boxer 21. Bowling for Destroyers, Adam Sanford had 2 for 20, Keon Lake 2 for 37 and Andre Kirton 2 for 39. In reply Bedessee failed to get over the line ending on 142 for 6 only  Romeno Deane 26*, Nicholas Stanford 23 and Kaveshwar Bridgepaul 23 with respectable cameos. N. Adil was again on the ball with 2 for 51, and brother Bilal 2 for 21 to restrict  the opponents. Panthers now move on to play Golden Duck in BB T20 final on June 2nd at 8:30 am at Marine Park.

Treat Travel enjoyed a pedestrian day in the BCL as they won by default against newcomers Sheffield, who failed to show for their fixture scheduled for May 27, in what can be dubbed a dose of miscommunication. The battle for Brooklyn continues on June 2:

Destroyers edge ACA to move in BBT20

Following the twist and turn of scheduling The Bhutto Memorial T 20 resumed with the remaining quarterfinals on Saturday, May 26 at Marine Park. The undefeated Americas Cricket Academy meet the formidable Bedessee Destroyers, while Millat T20 runners up Panthers entertained Jinnah. Upon winning toss Destroyers inserted the Dragons in moist conditions. Trouble started early when Dellon Moffat swept Azurudeen Mohammed into the lap of Hugh Craig at square leg, 10 for 1. Mohammed and Craig combined again this time to effect a run out, Craig fielding at mid wicket this time to find Lawrence Shoy short of his ground at the bowlers end.

The recovery never came as Adam Sanford had Sean Stanislaus leg before without scoring in the fifth over 20 for 3,  He was followed by Clain Williams two overs later bowled Sanford 35 for 4. Keon Lake replaced Mohammed and he stifled the batting further inducing a false shot from Javien Thomas caught Romeno Deane running in from long off. Akeem Dodson at the other end looked in good nick as he tried to put an innings together. Going after Andre Kirton with another big drive he held out to Nicholas Stanford on the long off boundary 55 for 6. Jermaine Lawson batting at 10 put together a cameo stroking two lusty maximum back over the bowlers’ heads as he ended unbeaten on 27, with ACA mustering a poultry 111 off 19 over. Bowling for Destroyers Sanford 2 for 13, Lake 2 for 19,  and Mohammed 2 for 24 kept the opposition batting intact.

In reply Bedessee found the going tough as ACA wasn’t about to roll over. Lawson again was in the action as his throw to the bowlers end found Travis Ross short of his ground 6 for 1 the first wicket falling on the 11th ball simultaneously with the fall of the first wicket in the ACA innings. Dragons kept up the pressure and that allowed Sean Stanislaus to induce a false stroke from Stanford, playing across to one outside off, caught at the wicket by Dodson 15 for 2 (3.3 overs), Dragons were 14 for 2 (3.2 overs). Stanislaus then had Mohammed caught at slip by Moffat 15 for 3 (3.5 overs) game on. Henderson Blades then followed a short one from Lawson to offer a simple catch to Thomas at mid on 23 for 4 (4.5 overs) advantage Academy.

Deane batting with Treon Forde put together a 23 run stand which looked like stealing the game from the Dragons, but Deane trying to keep up the moment picked out Prashant Nair running in from midwicket off Thomas 46 for 5 (8.4 overs). It was a day when the big partnership were few as Forde was bowled Thomas after adding 11 with Shaw Mason 57 for 6. Captain Kirton announced his presence at the crease whipping Nair over the mid wicket ropes, but going for another jugular, Williams held on to the catch running round some 10 plus yards to wide long on, 71 for 7  12.3 overs. Two balls later Nair worked Mason’s timber 73 for 8 12.5.

ACA needing just two wicket with a meager 25 runs required for victory did themselves no justice. Lake swept Nair out to square leg, only for D. Ravello to be out of position in front of square on the boundary, yielding four and a missed chance. Nair pried another opportunity with Sanford looping a catch to wide long on only for miscommunication between Moffat running around from mid wicket and Jermaine Horatio, down his throat to clash spilling the chance. Lake lofted a mistimed drive to cover but a jaded fielder was never in position to create even a half chance. Sanford then drove Moffat down the ground to find Thomas off the boundary with the chance going into the ropes for four. Sandford then sealed the match with another one of his straight drives this time off Thomas with Moffatt unable to get to firm hand to it, five was needed so the maximum did the trick, Sanford unbeaten on 21, a matching cameo.

Panthers got past Jinnah in another close quarterfinal, and will meet Destroyers in the semis on Memorial Day at 3 pm. In the first Semifinal Golden Ducks, beat Shaheen to book their place in the final.

Noble 50, Jags 3 for 12 spur Liberty SC past ESW

By Danesh Deonarine

A patient 50 from Micheal Noble and a web-spinning 4 overs for 12 runs with 3 wickets from veteran Ramratan Jagnarine spurred the Achievers Real Estate NY, Inc. sponsored Liberty Sports Club past East Side Warriors.

LSC won the toss and chose to bat first on at times tricky to negotiate Brentwood II pitch. With openers removed early Noble was left to rebuild the LSC innings. The right hander played a patient innings working the ball around and capitalizing on the odd boundaries.

The rest of the LSC batsmen all got decent starts but were not able to carry on with Imtiaz Hassan and Thakur Singh managing 17 each to lend support. The LSC innings ended on 189 all out off of 37 overs. Bowling for ESW Saud Alvi picked up 5 wickets for 32 runs and was supported by Ashon Quadeer  and Kashif Naseem who picked up 2 wickets each.

The men in blue got off to a spirited start in their defense. ESW opener Ali Alvi opted to charge paceman Terrence Madramootoo on the very first ball only to be greeted with a sharp bouncer in the armpit region. From there the LSC attack would not allow their opposition to settle.

Fellow opening bowler, Imtiaz Hassan (3 for 40), would strike early along with Terrence (1 for 25) make early inroads. Vijendra Singh (2 for 19) also delivered the goods as the first change option when he rearranged the furniture breaking the third wicket partnership as well as removing the fourth wicket.

Ramratan Jagnarine entered the attack at this stage and cleaned up the middle and lower order with his experienced off spin. Jags picked up 3 cheap wickets for 12 runs off 4 overs. ESW’s innings came to an end in 27th over when they were all out for 108.

Liberty Sports Club heads into the Memorial Day Weekend break with 8 points in the competitive EACA Power40 Zone I points table (Game 1– Tied With Richmond Hill Cricket Club, Game 2 – Loss to Everest/ACS, Game 3 –Win against East Side Warriors).

Can Windies Bounce Back at Trent Bridge?

By Dyon Ravello

With many die-hards realizing the slight improvement, West Indies continue along that long dark road better known as failure. Yes Shiv continues to be a sturdy fortification in the batting line up, with support coming from Samuels, Ramdin, Bravo and Barath at the top, yet it remaining insufficient.  We have batsmen continuously failing innings after innings all season spaning back to the recently concluded series against the Aussies. The clouds over Lord’s may have been less grey if Powell and Kirk Edward had made amends for the first innings fault and contributed to the second innings resilience to have the fifth day ending in a different complexion.

I can remember while I Queen’s Park Cricket Club, former Test pacer Dillon mentioned,  that the batsmen wont giving the bowlers any sort of runs to defend. The scenario in particular was South Africa’s 5 nil drubbing of the Caribbean side in a series where the Proteas score in excess of 500 in almost each fixture. This leads one to think cricket is 11 v. 11 and if the batting side could only must 150, 175 it would be the duty of the bowling attack to restrict the opponents below those totals rather than complaint that the total was not enough. England bowled out for 51 at Sabina a series in which the Maroon men fought tooth and nail to maintain the lead and eventual win the series back in 2009. Actual that was the last time WICB beat anyone ranked above them in Test. Rolling back the years Ambi  and Co. bowling out Andy Fowler’s Zimbabwe for 63 defending 99 at the Queens Park Oval in 2000.That’s why its called Test Cricket there are no fielding restriction, on over limitations a true test, not only of talent and skill, but of character and mental aptitude.

Trent Bridge presents the world number with another opportunity to fine tune their engine before the real test in South Africa, and Strauss will want Sammy and Co. to continue to bring the “A-Game.” However there are many dilemmas which continue to plague the once crowd pleasing unit of the 70’s into the mid 90’s. The top order remains unresolved even with the sparkles shown by the youth talents. Many would have thought Gayle’s 333 in late 2010 against Sri Lanka had secured the opening position with some stability. Then came IPL, Gibson, Radio Shows all of which have contributed to the fraility of the top order. Ronnie Sarwan had been seasoned at number 3 barring injury which eventual cost him his role at the team leader. How different things may have been if Sarwan was able to lead the Windies for an extended period like Gayle or incumbent Sammy.

The travails continue as Shiv has stood the ultimate test of time, Samuels continues to look a renewed player since his ban with Kirk and Darren Bravo showing that they are key to the West Indian recovery but the must managed properly. Our bowling is a far cry from the 500 plus totals of yesteryear with Kemar Roach developing into a gallant leader but he too needs to manage his work load to ensure longevity. Ravi Rampaul, Shane Shillingford, Shannon Gabriel, and to a less extent Fidel Edwards as well as Tino Best combine with the ability to support Roach in bowling out the opposition twice.  As for Fidel I am reserved as he has not been the same player since returning from Big Bash earlier this year. Then come Darren Sammy, a personality who continues to work on his individual game, a marked influence as captain, and ever positive. However Sammy’s role in the Test team still continues to leave a lot to be desired. He is not a match winning bowler day in day out, and his batting is not honed sufficiently to omitted a specialist up the order.

Dwayne Bravo and Andre Russell are more suitable candidates for the all-rounder role. But then IPL comes into play, its glitz, the glamor and off course its gold. WICB remain mum on the issue of losing players to the IPL, it so much seems as its part of their agenda. To speculate the WICB are willing to sacrifice its finer talents for a “Gibson Agenda” or any other peculiar reason. The strange scenario is that IPL has not been given distinct place on the ICC calendar in addition to West Indies being the most, if not only team daunted by the Indian T20 extravaganza. Can WICB not source, and present a package to attract adequate financing in order to keep our talents at home when needed especially against ana Australian team who whipped the Indians 4 nil and the world Number 1 English.

KP not Pietersen but Pollard, has at times mentioned his interest to play at the Test Level, and he has backed these statement with two ODI hundreds in close succession. One can only wander if he continues in the same vain if he will get his chance now some five years in international cricket. In sum the Caribbean Administration,  needs to discontinue its archaic attitude of isolating players, and keep them close, in touch,  still believing. The talent is abundant but the system continues to fail its numerous flaws. With Sarwan and Nash scoring runs in England and not under consideration, the batting should not be the problem. The pool of West Indian players is more than sufficient to beat any side in the world but we need to plan to utilize our resources to succeed.

Looking forward to see what cards will, Gib and Sam play come Test #2 at the Bridge.
