Team Predictor: WI Regional 4 Day Tough Task For T&T Selectors

Dyon Ravello,

With the West Indian Selectors about to determine their squad to face Oz in the first ODI of the Digicel Series on march 16th. It is anticipated from my previous Team Predictor, TnT will not have the services of Captain Ramdin, Dwayne and Darren the Bravo brothers, Kieron Pollard and Spin sensation Sunil Narine for the Regional 4 Day match up versus Jamaica on Friday at the Queens Park Oval. TnT would also be without the services of former skipper Daren Ganga, who is attending his graduation ceremony for completing his Law Degree. With six key member missing, along with Ravi Rampaul and Lendl Simmons injured, player who have been on the fringe of the team now have an opportunity to stake their claim at the First Class level, most notably Marlon Barclay this seasons in-form Opening batsman.

New York Cricket Region, USACA Senior East Conference Regional Cricket Champions

By Dyon Ravello

July 8, 2009
After a opening days defeat to South East. New York rebounded to win there final two games emphatically to take the East Conference Title and advance to the Finals of the USACA regional championships to be held in Texas, a prelude to USA’s journey to UAE where they will battle for a chance to play at the 20/20 world cup in the Caribbean in 2010.

Speaking with Linden Fraser the coach of the triumphant Big Apple selection, who outlined the journey to the top. The New Yorker left for Maryland at 6 am on Friday 17th July morning, arriving at 11:00 am, due to financial constraints within US cricket, overnight accommodation was not available on Thursday. Fraser states, “Our late arrival is not to blame of our dismal performance against the southerners but it did indeed have an overt effect.” after the 11: 00 am arrival New York won the toss and batted first thirty minutes later. The decision to bat was taken considering the physical and mental state of the players who had just completed a 5 hour trek down the I-95, who thought it would be worse to field first.

New York stumbled along to 119 all out after 31 over, with US and New York Captain, Steve Massiah with the only significant contribution 26. US seamer Tim Allen did most of the damage for south east. “The shot selection was poor when we batted and questionable decisions by the umpire, complemented our tardiness,” stated Fraser on New York’s poultry total. Lennox Cush and Kevin Darlington were both given leg before with bat on ball. and all-rounder Dennison Thomas was bowled and caught off a ball the hit the carpet before Allen held the catch.

In the field New York could not change there direction, even as Darlington ran through the South East top order, to leave the score at 33 for 5. Sloppy fielding and drop catches were no aided to the already dire position. Former American youth player, Andre Kirton effected a run out, with a direct hit leaving Tummala out of his crease. Fraser noted, “Kirton was excellence in the field he is one of the best all-rounder in the New York region, he is a complete cricketer, a batsman who can bat in any situation, outstanding fieldsman, and a very deceptive left arm orthodox bowler.” Nevertheless South East were able to rub the salt deep in the wounds as they took first day honors, defeating the perennial giants.

Day two rendered new hope for the defending champs as they meet the youthful Director’s XI. However it was not all smooth sailing as Azurudeen Mohammed, lead his team scoring the first century of the tournament, a deserved 112 taking advantage of placid conditions. The Director’s XI scored 242 all out with New York again sloppy in the field with a few drop catches. Barrington Bartley was superb with the ball picking up 2 for 23 off his 10, Kevin Darlington was again in the hunt wit three scalps, and Karan Ganesh snared two.

New York’s strategy was to post the win within 32 overs to boost their run rate in quest for standing at the pinnacle on Sunday, but could only achieve victory after 40 over. Hall lead the way with an exquisitely constructed unbeaten ton, 123 he was well supported by the captain Massiah 88, New York winning comprehensively by 9 wickets. Linden Fraser, made special mention about Keon Lake, who he thought contribute to New York’s delay in achieving its first victory of 2009, with an outstanding second spell to slow the run flow. “Lake is an outstanding fieldsman, and very knowledgeable bowler, as well as his knowledge of the game is more suitable for someone more senior. He has to maintain focus, by sticking to the basics and push for the next level,” commended Fraser.

After restoring some normalcy New York took the Saturday evening off, by not holding any team meeting. However both manager, Linden Dodson and Fraser, deliberated in the calculating the run rate to estimate the margin need for victory against the undefeated Atlantic Region, in an effort to grasp the top spot. Atlantic region were set a target of 150 by the big apple strategist. On Sunday morning prior to the final showdown against archrivals, manager Dodson, led the team with and inspiring speech, with include several motivational quotes. Understanding the task at hand, set by the Fraser, L. Dodson and skipper Massiah, the New York were now pumped to show why New York is the best cricket location in the East.

Atlantic won the toss and batted, only to have Darlington, breathe fire, scalping three to tally 10 in the tournament. In the field Glen Hall and Bartley both effected runouts. As George Adams and Bartley had 2 wickets each, restricting the second day leaders to 88 allout, well within the range which was planned by the strategist.

Glen Hall was again rearing to go with the bat as he took 13 of the first over for US seamer Irfan Awan. The umpires contribute to both events on th final day, with Hall playing on off a chest high full toss for clubmate Adrian Gordon. The square leg umpire, signalled no ball, but was over turned by the presiding umpire. The Director’s who eventually lost by two wickets were penalised for the use of profanity by their wicketkeeper, costing them 5 run in a keen contest. Massiah rounded of the tournament of grounded as he started, with and unbeaten 38, support by Dennis Evans 22 as New York again won with 9 wickets in hand in 9.3overs.

Fraser give praise to, “Bedesse Sporting Goods for sponsoring the team uniforms, Jeffery Marshall, the New York Cricket Region President and his league presidents for the financial support giving for the team travels and board, kudos to Linden Dodson the manager for his valuable articulation also.” Fraser hinted at players who he thinks may contribute to USA’s fortunes in UAE in the fall, Massiah, the national captain, Hall, Darlington, Bartley, Akeem Dodson, who can contribute as a wicketkeeper batsman or even just with the bat only, Rashard Marshall. Mention was made of Carl Wright but that is provided that he appears in the Finals.

Gregory Sewdial and Azurudeen Mohammed were also in mind, as they are both currently US youth players who have shown the tenacity to succeed at the next level. Fraser cited, “Sewdial should reassess he game and should push for ton a high profile tournaments as the ICC Under 19 Americas qualifiers recently completed and the Regional Conferences.”

Congratulations on the triumphant New York senior team. All New York cricket enthusiasts, officials, players and fans wish you best of luck in Texas later this year. However from a development prospective, a program can be implemented for this group to grow, by playing with each other on a regular basis. We can utilize the Indoor nets available, to accommodate the working team members as well as the outdoor facilities. This group should included the Currently selection of, Massiah, Evans, Hall, Lennox Cush, Rashard Marshal, Akeem Dodson, Dennison Thomas, Karan Ganesh, Bartley, Adams, Darlington, Kirton, Carl Wright. Another 6-8 players can contribute to maintaining a high level of competitiveness in the team; with names like, Azurudeen Mohammed, Gregory Sewdial, Dominic Audain, Adrian Gordon, Kumar Nandalal, Damien Lewis, Keon Lake, and Fahad Mughal to choose from.

Who Will Take “US Cricket Open 2011″

By Dyon Ravello

US Open is being pitted as America’s premier cricketing event. Cricket Council USA is hosting their US Cricket Open for the third year beginning on December 1st through 4th. In its inauguaral tournament Washington Tigers pipped New York Destroyers to take home the $10,000 prize.  A year ago US captain Steve Massiah led United Chargers to pocket the $25,000 purse. Massiah will be leading the Chargers again as he looks to take make a personal hattrick of championships, albeit with differing teams.  This winter the pole prize has double to $50,000 and there will be 31 teams pushing Massiah and his chargers to pocket the loot.

The 32 team champions will have eight groups of four teams from which each group winner will qualify for the quarterfinals. It’s a “do or die” scenario where all the effort would count especially the extra enthuasiam that a prestigeous tournament extracts from top players. Each mistake will be taken into account during and after each match. The lesser the number of mistake the close each team shall be to the $50,000 booty. The eight quarterfinalists will face off for four semifinal places from which the two winners will contest the final. The teams are grouped as follows:

Group 1   ****   United Chargers/Midwest Bears/Blue Angels/Boom Boom Giants

Group 2   ****   NY Destroyers/NW Moose/Memphis Super Kings/Virginia Warriors

Group 3   ****   Cool Tech/Dulles CC/Orlando Thunder/North Atlanta

Group 4   ****   Fooglies/NY Steelers/MC Eagles/US All-Stars

Group 5   ****   FL Destroyers/Metropolitan Giants/DC Knight Riders/

                           San Francisco Blasters

Group 6   ****   US Tigers/Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Legions/

                           Urbana Panthers/Connecticut Huskies

Group 7   ****   Sixersports/US Masters/Washington Tigers/BPL

Group 8   ****   Pakistan Magic/Team MJ/Sri Lankans/Camelot CC

Matches will be played at three venues across Lauderhill Florida, Central Broward Regional Park, Miramar Regional Park and Brian Piccolo Park. Two venues will host three matches per day with evening match under light while Brian Piccolo is only able to host two games per day in the daylight. On December 1st Central Broward will host the Opening Ceremony from 8:30am-9:15am. At 9pm on Day 1 there will be a reception at Holiday Inn & Suites – Sunrise the tournament Command Center. On Saturday 3rd the Command Center will host the Gala Dinner – Cricket in America at 9 pm. The tournament closes on Sunday 4th with semifinals at Central Broward at 10 am, Half-Time Musical Festival at 1pm and the Championship Trophy Presentation at 5 pm after the Final which begins at 2 pm.

Teams across the country have been bracing the cold fall weather in an effort to prepare their units for the tournament. Florida in December provides to perfect launching pad for the winners with the holiday season and the New Year around the corner. The first prize is truly a neat bonus to look forward to, and for the athletes the national selectors won’t be too far off taking notice of the abundance of talent from which American Cricket can move forward. May the best unit buy the best gifts this holiday.

Kiwi Players look to partner with American clubs Posted on November 14, 2011

November 14th 2011

The NZCPA has partnered with the United States Youth Cricket Association to match New Zealand first-class cricketers with American clubs. This collaboration will include competitive play and coaching by the Kiwis. These will also be a cost sharing opportunities, As the NZCPA will be subsidizing a percentage of the cost for a club to have the player over the summer.

The New Zealand Cricket Players Association (NZCPA) is taking strides not only to keep there players active in the off season, but also developing cricket beyond the test world. The seasons of the Southern Hemisphere are opposite to those of the Northern half of the world. In the frigid months of each new year American cricketers are fortunate to get in a knock in the indoor nets if one is available. Simultaneously the new year bring the busiest cricket in the southernmost reach of the cricket world. Conversely, Americans are able to enjoy the bat and ball tussle between the wicket during the summer months of May through to September. During this time our Kiwi friends are confined by the winter months.

This is very unique opportunity and a step in the right direction for both the players in the American and New Zealand game. This should be a catalyst for future development and talent sharing. As much as the Kiwis are keen to share and enjoy the glitz of America, so too American cricketers should be keen to step out of their comfort zone and venture aboard for further development, knowledge and advancement. In 2005 after the Trinidad and Tobago season had been complete, Justin Guillen (Then a lesser known name to first-class cricket) spent weeks competing in Barbados at the highest level. These overseas excursions lead to Guillen’s selection to his National senior team and eventual West Indies A team. At the youth level Guillen was behind in the pecking order but has now surpass those who were ahead of him then, and he continues to push to become a more significant member of the Red Force Team.

Akeem Dodson too comes to mind, after attending the 2006 youth world cup his visits to England has helped him to force his way back into the senior fold of the US national team. These exchanges are imperative for all stakeholders, from Test playing nations right back to the Affiliates. And the responsibility lies on this the parents, the coaches, the clubs and administration at each level. We can no longer wait for the Board or the Management to help us develop our game (be it as a player or a nation). We all have a role to play to make a difference.

Windies Missing Gayle in India

With Gayle still out of action in maroon what cards will Gibson and Sammy play on Monday when the Second test begins.

It would have been nice to have Gayle and DJ Bravo to choose from to bolster the team. Hopefully the limited over leg of this series can restore some normalcy to West Indian team selection. It great to see the performances coming through on the A team. Finally miser new ball spinner Samuel Badree gets a call up to WI A team. But there is still the matter of Sunil Narine is he going to India on the limited over leg? Even as we speak about those who have been outstanding? Andre Russell continues to impress with both ball and bat and is developing into a genuine allrounder. We would all like him to transfer his successes to the top level. So too Nkruma Bonner has shown that his bat can carry him a long way.

So I will invite all fans to comment, share your views on selection for the coming limited overs leg in India. Here is my Sqaud with all else equal:

Gayle, Simmons, Barath, DM Bravo, Samuels, Ramdin, DJ Bravo, Pollard, Capt Sammy, Rampaul, Russell, Roach, Bishoo, Narine, Hyatt, (Powell)

USACA strike a pose

Well Well Well the great eagle strikes again. Since when a CRICKET coach is cavalier enough to take up reins of a team mere days before a tournament. No disrespect to my fellow Trini Mr. Singh. But any team any coach needs at least a month of work with at minimum the team’s core players. This will be Singh’s third stint as a National coach. And its the third occurrence which is undeserving. I would go on to stay that USACA and its current HONCHOS need to be dumped by the caucus. Furthermore the USACA should be renamed to purge the blight which has slighted our beloved sport in this here great nation. Kudos to those who have put principle first, those ladies from Lynx who have forgone national duty for dignity will be rewarded for this gesture. To those who have been entrusted with the responsibility of qualifying us for the World Cup, best of luck make us proud spur on this cricketing Nation.

To address the issue of stipends. Our women are qualifying for the World Cup unlike our men who can seem to understand the meaning of international cricket. The women are going for world cup they should earn a similar of greater stipend than the lads. The women got $100K donation. How can us spend 63K on a training camp and not have enough for the main tournament that is just insane.

CHA is looking to have a T20 tournament with local and international pros. The initial complaints were about the pitches in Florida. What is the short term and long term goals and objective for the Tournament. What with be the format? Regions, Franchisees? A tournament at on venue of a tournament that attempts to attract a fan base across the national. We need answers what about sponsors and corporate partnerships?

On the issue of national structure the entire system is flawed. Clubs feed into the Leagues and Leagues supply the Regional teams from which the National team is selected. Our clubs contest T20 and limited over between 30 and 40 overs per team. The Inter league structure follows similar to that of the Clubs. For us New Yorkers the Club season runs from May till early October, giving cricketer five full months of cricket. Inter League tournaments are as short and instantaneous as Regional tournaments. Regional tournament are two three day events each year and are t20 and 50 over tournaments like the Division Tournaments. The point is the players who are competing against each other on a regular basis. We have eight regions, we need these region playing each other at least one a in a season even more, mo’ better. So too the longer version of the game has to be incorporated as we cannot wait till USA is playing in Division one for our regions to play three day cricket and our clubs two day affairs. Tomorrow starts now!!! We need transparency, corporation and partnership.
