The fifth round was fan-filled in the EACA as NY Centurion notched their second win in as many matches. This time they were punching in their own weight bracket rather dislodging one of the Big Five, in Big Apple. Centurion’s win has drawn them level on points with Big Apple, 12. As for Big Apple they will have their work cut out for them this weekend when the meet Hillside on June 16th.

Like Big Apple, Hillside will be going for the kill after having lost pole position to Meten-Meer-Zorg (MMZ). MMZ scored 183/8 on the back of 50 from Deonauth Baksh and Amarnauth Persaud 36. Hillside did not only fall short in being routed for 61, so too surrendered  Zone I’s top spot. Rocky Kowchai was the main destroyer with 4/15. Arsenal kept pace as they shot out Phantom to move to 12 points. With Camelot joining the party, victorious over Falcons to move into the sixth round with 12 points as well.

Ardsley Romp Melbourne NY Alliance

American Cricket League

by Dyon Ravello

Ardsley made the trip to Baisley Pond, Queens where they met Melbourne NY Alliance. Melbourne won the toss and inserted the opposition to take first strike. Melbourne made use of the moist conditions as seamers Roopnarine and A. Khan accounted for the openers by the end of the fourth over. Batting at number three Kevin Murrell combined with former West Indian International Junior Murray to repair the damage. Murrell got into his stride a he walloped 25 off Khan’s third over, effectively ousting the bowler from the attack. At the other end Murray seemed circumspect as he attempted to acclimatized to the conditions.

Melbourne’s captain Troy Mars replaced Roopnarine from the Pond End, as he nipped Murray’s edge, with glove-man Rahimullah Shakoor completing the dismissal. Anthony Harewood had Orient Bostic caught at the wicket with Shakoor taking a sharp catch to his right. Murrell continued to anchor the innings even as he lost another partner, Chris Bachu finding the edge with Mars finishing a regulation catch behind the stumps. Amid the constant procession, Murrell was given a life as he slapped Ravello to extra cover, with the fieldsman unable to hold on. Bachu accounted for two scalps in his sixth over to maintain the pressure on the batting side.

Murrell (43) looking to step on the pedal could only manage to sky a return catch, Mars’ third snatch on the day. Jamal Simon was joined by Lester Douglas as the pair tried to release the shackles. Simon was keen running in between the wicket, and was even spared as Shakoor failed to effect in what should have been a simple run out with Simon 15 yards up the pitch. Both Mars and Shakoor kept the screws locked with their miserly off breaks. Douglas had a maximum as he swung Mars over wide mid wicket, but generally the boundaries were few on the day. Ardsley closed their innings by posting 183/9 with Douglas contributing 30. For Melbourne Bachu was the pick of the bowlers with 3/36, Mars 2/32, Shakoor, Khan, Harewood and Roopnarine all with one wicket each.

Set 184 at a modest rate of 4.6 runs per over Melbourne Alliance were confident in chasing the total. Simon began the defense with a maiden over first up. Shakoor stroked two sixes and boundary signalling his intent. Yet the heroics were all but short lived as Shakoor was adjudged stumped off the bowling of Simon to be the first man out. Harewood joined Stefan Rampersaud adopting less aggressive approach. Harewood nicked one onto his pad, which resulted in an appeal, as the umpire affirmed the appeal. The impact the ball made on the bat was so distinct that the stewards 70 meters away could decipher the sound similar to the Snickometer. Ardsley made the gallant decision to withdraw their appeal, recalling Harewood.

Undeterred by all the commotion Simon breach Rampersaud’s gate, through bat and pad identical to his dismissal to Khan a fortnight earlier. Mars opened his account by crashing a huge six over mid wicket. Harewood fell to another leg before decision but his time without reprieve. Mars fashioned his knock as Shakoor had done before him as he whipped a volley to the square boundary. The moisture seemed to overwhelming as yet another fiery display was quelled, Mars 24 caught at the wicket off Douglas 64/3. Now Melbourne has lost its talisman with 160 needed for victory, Ravello joined Persaud. Douglas bouyed by his success, found added motivation as he went pass Ravello’s bat outside off stump.

Looking for the effort delivery Douglas strayed down the legs concede three wides. Douglas was in the hunt again a he wrapped Ravello on the knee roll outside off, initiating a confident appeal. Ardsley were pumped as they claimed their fifth wicket, Melbourne Alliance trembling with the chills. From there on Melbourne found no repose as Persaud was adjudge leg before and Khan bowled by Orient Bostic. Bachu went for the jugular, to only pick out mid wicket, where the fieldman took an exquisite diving catch with Bachu still looking for his first run of the season. Douglas claimed Ujerm Galloway leg before playing on the back foot as Bostic played timber music with Errol Deally’s wicket to complete the rout. Melbourne Alliance 83 all out with more that 20 overs unused. Lester Douglas led the wrecking crew with 4/13, to add to his cameo with the bat to earn the Man of the Match, with Simon 2/19 and Bostic  2/29.

Melbourne have now lost three consecutive matches and will be keen to improve that record when the travel to 80th Street Canarsie Brooklyn to play Somerset on June 15th. Somerset will be looking to maintain this season’s record against Melbourne following their victory a week earlier. Ardsley face West Indian at 108th Street on June 16th in a Father’s Day affair.

Mohammed Ton And Islam Fifer Highlight EACA Round 4

Richmond Hill edge Atlantis to Top Zone II

Azurdeen Mohammed 133 led MMZ over Long Island United

Azurdeen Mohammed 133 led MMZ over Long Island United

EACA Power 40 resumed following the holiday intermission. For Meten-Meer-Zorg it was business as usual even having been inactive for the past two weeks. MMZ piled on 294 on the back of 133 by captain Azurdeen Mohammed. Deonauth Baksh and Saud Hossien contributed fifties to complete the onslaught. Long Island United were without fervor as they fold to the swing bowling of Rayhanul Islam. Islam sneering 5/17 to rout the Islanders for 79.

Centurions got their account on the road with a comfortable win over Phantom. Phantom posted 137 but it was not enough as C raghnauth finished unbeaten on 53 to lead his side to a seven wicket victory.  Falcons took Hillside to the depth after scoring just 116. But Hillside held their nerve to complete a three wicket to maintain pole position in Zone I. Big Apple made light work of Camelot completing a  convincing nine wicket victory.

In Zone II Richmond Hill face leaders Atlantis as the weekends most competitive fixture. Neither of the sides failed to live up to the billing as Atlantis posted 183 with Henderson Blades 46 and Greg Robinson 44 not out. Shameer Sadloo was workmanlike as the skipper with 4/28 and Sudesh Dhaniram 3/47. Set 184 at a rate of 4.6 per over Richmond Hill fancied their chances of extended their winning record against Atlantis. Casper Davis Jr drew first blood as he removed Debo Sankar and Sudesh Dhaniram to dent the Richmond Hill response. Jason Greaves accounted for Imran Alli to make it three down early on. Richmond Hill found their way again with a partnership between Wazid Ward 54 and Prashad Mahadeo 39. Shameer picked up the cause even amid a procession of dismissals. Shameer remained unbeaten on 35 to complete an all-round match winning performance to edge their rivals by a solitary wicket.

In other results ACS/Everest trounced Eastside Warriors by 302 runs. This was Everest’s first taste of the action all season as their previous fixtures were unplayable. Allstars register their first win, coming over Victory to keep the latter rooted at the bottom of the table. Enmore and Galaxy did not play their match and the result is under review. Action continues this Sunday.

Zafar 8 Wicket Haul Rocks Melbourne NY Alliance

American Cricket League

by Dyon Ravello,

Melbourne New York Alliance (MNYA) meet newcomers Punjab as the American League resumed after last weekends rains. At Baisley Pond, Queens, both teams seemed pumped for a keen contest. Punjab former Brooklyn champions in their last seasons of league play and MNYA 2011 American Champs the last champs to be crowned, met in moist conditions, as the clouds looked to clear after a some 10 days of torrential weather.

Different League, same old Zafar, Khan ripped through Melbourne NY Alliance with 8 wicket haul

Zafar Khan ripped through Melbourne NY Alliance with 8 wicket haul

Following a romping win over MVP a fortnight earlier with MNYA piling 370 on the back of 170 from Troy Mars, as MYNA looked to continue in the same vein. However Punjab had other ideas as they looked to improve on their record with one win from their solitary match played previously. Mars called incorrectly on a day when most captain with rather have won the toss. Shoaib “Babar” Chaudhry inserted the visitors to take first strike. Babar’s decision proved a significant one as he employed left arm seamer Zafar Khan. Z. Khan was greeted with a flowing on drive through mid wicket as Steve Samuels look to get his side on the way. Khan struck with the very next delivery Samuels failed to get bat on a full delivery to be adjudged leg before wicket. Z. Khan buoyed by the early breakthrough, held on to a return catch from namesake Zafar Yusuf, as he stuck out his left arm to hold on to a clinically one-handed snatch. Melbourne NY Alliance as ominous as the grey clouds overhead at 7/2 after the first over.

Mars opened his account as he whipped Ghallani to the mid wicket boundary. At the other end Kristoff Narine

Troy Mars continued with his appetite for big runs as he score 170 for Melbourne NY Alliance

Troy Mars continued with his appetite for big runs as he scored 170 for Melbourne NY Alliance

found his stride with an expansive delivery over cover to find the ropes. Narine’s bravado was short-lived as Zafar made timber music to scalp his third. Jameel Khan made it two for two on the namesake list as he was adjudge leg before. Zafar was not quite done as he trapped Rahimullah Shakoor in front to achieve his five wicket haul by the end of his third over.  Mars continued to be a spectator for much of the proceeding at the non-strikers end, but he too met his fate, with  Zafar at work again this time with a suspect leg before decision. As the famous football “soccer” commentator, Ally Mc Coist would say, “they are six down on their own ground,” a chill to the MNYA cause. Stephan Rampersaud looked solid first up, yet Zafar would again breach the gate to account for the first seven scalps.

Melbourne NY Alliance cordially invites one and all to its Bar-Ber-Q in the Park on June 8th from High Noon, you got to be there!

Melbourne NY Alliance cordially invites one and all to its Bar-Ber-Q in the Park on June 8th, 12pm

Melbourne NY Alliance looked to use its get out of jail card as Ravello and S. Persaud looked to build a match saving partnership. The pair took 14 of first over from change bowler S. Ahmed, as they played Zafar with caution. The repair job was foiled as Ravello was stumped by Imran Mahzar off Rizwan Akram.  For a moment if seemed that the Zafar show had ran its course, but he was never short of appetite on the day as the bails were made to do the jig, Carlos Bachu being number eight. S Roopnarine played his shots at number eleven as if the alarms had been silenced. Another attempt to stem the carnage only for a while, even as Zafar completed his quota at the drinks break. Waseem Akhtar completed the rout as Roopnarine was the last man out for a topscore of  24. Melbourne NY Alliance stuttering to a paltry 90 all out in 16 overs. Zafar Khan’s eight wicket grab setting the bar for the 2013 season.

Punjab were always in control as Abdul Hafeez thumped Bachu over long on for a maximum in the very first over. Bachu had a reprieve as Shabeer Ahmed skied a simple catch to Jameel Khan at cover.  Adnan Khan looked nonchalant as he rotated the strike with the aggressive Hafeez. Persaud was employed with his left arm spin in the eleventh over, and he accounted for Hafeez, stumped by Samuels for 34. Adnan and Qasim worked the singles and pounced on any loose bowling on offer to complete a comprehensive eight wicket win, Adnan unbeaten on 34. An earlier wake up call for the Melbourne NY Alliance as Punjab seek to assert the standard.

Rain Rules EACA Third Round

May Showers was the only winner last weekend during the EACA Power 40 Third Round. Swamped outfields left the league inactive with teams earning two points each, apart from Meten Meer Zorg (MMZ) and Victory as they were not carded to play.

With memorial weekend upon us, there are no matches scheduled till the Fourth round on June 2nd. On the field there was no activity but on the table Hillside took a two point lead to replace MMZ as Zone I leaders. In Zone II the changes were at the bottom end as Eastside Warriors and Allstars earned their first points to leave Victory in cellar position and pointless.

Eight New Yorkers Among 24 USA U-19 Trialist

USACAAfter a month of Regional trials across the nation, The United States of America Cricket Association (USACA), today announced that it has sent letters of invitation to 24 players to attend its inaugural U19 Combine to be held in Florida from May 31 to June2, 2013

An invitation to this inaugural USACA Combine is an honor and it gives players the opportunity  to advance their cricket education and be part of the USACA Talented Player Pathway designed to track and support players from the youth level all the way up into the National senior team.  By attending the Combine players will be included in USACA Talented Player database and will  be targeted for future skills development. Performance at the local level will be monitored on an on-going basis.

The format of the Combine will include speed, endurance and strength tests and cricketing skills testing along with a series of matches of varying lengths. The Combine also provides the opportunity to assess technical, tactical, physical and mental strengths. All tests will be measurable to allow for direct comparisons between players.

Selwyn Caesar, Chair of USACA National Selection Committee commented

“The USACA U19 Combine was designed to prepare players who were identified during the evaluation period. The selected players would be participating in multiple facets of physical training, dexterity and other cricket related activities which would be managed by Mr. Andy Pick, ICC Americas High Performance Manager in conjunction with coaches and other specialist trainers.”

The Combine is one component of the USA National U19 Team preparation for ICC Americas U19 Tournament to be held in Toronto, Canada from July 7 to 15, 2013. Participating countries are USA, Bermuda and Canada. The winner automatically advances to ICC U19 2014 World Cup to be held in UAE.
