Indy cricket stadium may be built by 2014

  • John LaBerge

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A cricket stadium may be built in Indianapolis by next year. That’s what some newspapers in India are reporting Mayor Greg Ballard told a group of business leaders during an overseas visit Tuesday.

“What were talking about is investing 4 or 5 world class international athletic fields, said Mayoral spokesman Marc Lotter.

It was a story put out by the Times of India with the headline ‘Indianapolis plans to build a cricket stadium’ that had Hoosiers scratching their head.

Indy_Cricket_Stadium_838800000_20130416183542_320_240Lotter says the “stadium” is actually part of the Indianapolis World Sports Park a facility in the works on the city’s eastside.“These are basically going to be world class athletic fields where we can host a multiple kind of sports lacrosse curling rugby cricket and really turn those into an asset for the city,”

Jatin Patel is the president of the Indiana Cricket association and also played the sport professionally in the US and his home country of India.

He supports the mayor’s efforts to build the facility and bid to host next years United States Amateur Cricket Championship.

“We have Indy 500 top world event our city has had so many sports in the past that we have had successful business and this is another international sport we can bring into this town,”

Cricket is the world’s second most popular sport behind soccer.

Both Patel and the Mayor believe adopting international sports like cricket will make Indianapolis more attractive to international businesses and talent.

Challengers Whip ACA To Take Raise Asia Tribune T20 Trophy

Normal

by Dyon Ravello

The Asia Tribune T20 ended with a fitting closure as Americas Cricket Academy faced favorites Challengers. The Academy had capitulated Punjab a day earlier to maintain its run as dark horses. Challengers entered the fray as the side to beat on the back of their 2012 success in Millat T20 and NYPL T20 tournaments. Amid the fanfare, Challengers won the toss and elected to take first strike.

As the teams prepared for their final pre-match conversations, the commentary team read the list of starting players for either side. For Challengers there were no surprises. In the other camp a startling omission, with Andre Kirton left out in bizarre circumstances making room for Hugh Craig who had sat out a day earlier, a genuine T20 all-rounder out for an off spinner. With the drama on its way Sean Stanislaus drew first blood only after four deliveries as Malik Razzak skied one to Dyon Ravello at mid off, 3/1. Ahmed Gulzar look to make up for the earlier loss as he stroked two consecutive boundaries through the covers off Greg Robinson. Gulzar looking to continue in the same vein offered a low catch to Michael Noble at cover off Stanislaus to be dismissed for 9 (5), 17/2.

The third wicket pair of Usman Choudary and Saroosh Nadeem consolidated as theylooked to repair the damage. Choudary hit a maximum and Nadeem found the boundary ropes as they rotated the strike amid some miserly Academy bowling. Challengers seemed suppressed by the pressure as Choudary 13 (18) called for a quick single, only to find himself short, Rafeek Nazeer’s direct hit completed the dismissal, 40/3.  Waqas Shah joined Nadeem as the pair maintained the ante as ACA dried up the boundaries. Prashant Nair struggled to find his line against a steady wind, but when he did Nadeem 19 (37) lost his wicket, bowled 67/4. Nair was again in the middle of the action to run out Waqas 15 (21) 74/5.

Haider Shah looked to loosen the screws with a maximum to get off the mark with Mohammed Shafiq supporting on the other end. Haider 16 (12) found the boundary, before he held out to Nazeer at long on 91/6.  Noble continued the procession as Burhan Siddique was bowled 96/7.  Alex Amsterdam completed the penultimate over with the wicket of Irfan Mazhar 2 (5) caught at cover 103/8. The late innings tempo was indeed shy as Noble picked up consecutive wickets off the final two deliveries of the innings. Taimoor Haider was caught at short third man Nazeer dove forward to complete his third dismissal on the day. Last man Asad Janjua stumped by wicketkeeper Ryan Sukhdeo, Challengers 107 all out, Shafiq unbeaten on 11 (10). Michael Noble the pick of the bowlers 4-0-17-3, joining Nair with 8 wickets in the tournament. Stanislaus 4-0-10-2 and Amsterdam 4-0-13-2 with the other key contributions.

Haider Shah completed an all-round with the bat, 2/13 with the ball and 3 dismissals in the field to earn the man of the match

Haider Shah completed an all-round performance with the bat, 2/13 with the ball and 3 dismissals in the field to earn the man of the match

Set 108 to win at a rate of 5.40 runs per over, Americas Cricket Academy were up for the challenge even with a batsman short. But it was Challengers who set about chart the course as Siddique began with a maiden over first up. Haider Shah followed up with the wicket of Noble 0 (3) caughtbehind 0/1. Siddique continued with negligible flaw only a wide conceded after his first two overs. Like Curtly and Courtney, Haider reaped the reward of Siddique’s effort as Nazeer was out leg before for a 12 ball duck. The score 8/2 as Nazeer fell to a dubious decision, a hint of bat was heard distinctly in the dugout. Stanislaus was joined by Amsterdam in a partnership, which was deemed to define the outcome. Like the openers the middle order pair struggled to release the challenging pressure.

At the halfway stage ACA were 30/2, needing 78 runs from 60 deliveries. Amsterdam 9 (20) attempted to free the hold as he swept at Nadeem to be leg before, 30/3. Nadeem struck another critical blow as he breached the captain’s gates to leave the Academy staring at defeat. Stanislaus 17 (27) played a rearguard innings but left much undone at 31/4. Three more wickets fell for the addition of nine runs, one of which Haider had a hand in effecting a run out. At 40/7, Nair found an able partner in Ravello with 68 runs needed off 45 deliveries. The late order pair rotated the strike for 13 deliveries scoring at a run a ball. With 55 needed off 32 Nair targeted Nadeem’s left arm orthodox, whipping a six over long on, which was followed up by a boundary with a repeated stroke.

The impetus, which was needed all innings, had finally arrived. The equation now stood at 45 from 30 at nine an over with three wickets in hand. Now ACA looked fancied to put on a late rally. The twisted in the tale was short lived as Ravello 5 (7) held out to long off 63/8, the innings’ best stand of 23 (16). Hugh Craig looking to push the score was run out, Haider involved again 66/9. The odds had now been restored in favor of Challengers. Choudary served up his first delivery, which turned out to be the last for the tournament a Robinson played all around it, bowled without scoring. Challengers lifted the Inaugural Asia Tribune T20 trophy.

Americas Cricket Academy lost by 42 runs, as Nair was left unbeaten for a top score of 20 (15). For Challengers, Nadeem was the pick of the bowlers with 4-0-21-3, Choudary 0/1, Tamoor 1/7 and Asad Janjua 1/14 with a wicket each. Haider Shah had figures of 3-0-13-2 in addition to his two run out and a cameo innings to earn the man of the match.

ACA To Battle Challenger For Asia Tribune T20 Crown

On a damp Saturday after at Marine Park, Brooklyn Asia Tribune T20 entered its third day with semifinal action. In game one, Challengers recovered from their narrow victory over Warriors to post 140 for 4 against Panthers. Usman Choudary lead the way with 43 and Trinson Caramichael contributed 25. Panthers needed to score at just above seven an over to advance, self-imploded. Panthers faulted to 102 all out to lose by 38 runs. Usman and Haider picked up two wickets each.

With Challengers on to Sunday’s Finale, it was left to Punjab and Americas Cricket Academy to duel for the remaining berth. ACA won the toss and inserted their opponent. After a succulent first over, Punjab lost Omar caught Troy Mars of Dyon Ravello’s first delivery, 13/1. Bilal made up for the early lost, thumping a six over cover point. Michael Noble replaced Ravello, and he had an immediate impact, as Shazad was leg before, 27/1.Wickets fell at regular intervals with the dangerous Jahanzib Alam, falling run out. Bilal scored 19 before he was caught at the wicket by Ryan Sukhdeo of Stanislaus as Punjab slipped to 38/5 at the end of the eighth over.

Amsterdam picked up 3 wickets for 9 runs, and scored 31 to lead ACA to Asia Tribune T20 final

Amsterdam picked up 3 wickets for 9 runs, and scored 31 to lead ACA to Asia Tribune T20 final

Adnan Karim attempt to post a recovery effort but the saving cast failed to show in overcast conditions. Alex Amsterdam had Adnan stumped for 19 as he accounted for two more scalps to wrap up the tail. Prashant Nair maintained he consistency with two wickets of his own. Punjab 65 all in 15. overs, Michael Noble yet to concede a run from his two overs with a wicket. Bowling Analysis: Stanislaus 4-0-12-1, Noble 2-2-0-1, Andre Kirton 2-0-5-1, Amsterdam 3-0-9-3 and Nair 2.1-0-9-2 among the pick of the bowlers.

Set a paltry total, the lowest of the tournament to date, ACA seemed keen to make light work of the target. Wahab Munir had other ideas as he had Noble bowled after he had conceded a boundary, 7/1. Punjabs was pumped as Adnan Naseem breached the gates of Rafeek Nazeer, to leave the Academy in a spot of both at 11/2. Amsterdam joined is captain as he found the boundary signaling his intent. Adnan Naseem added to the drama as he trapped the ACA skipper, Stanislaus leg before 25/3. Amsterdam continued in the same vein as he pulled to the square leg boundary on his way to 31 (17) at strike rate of 182.35. Amsterdam looked to finish off the victory in style, but held out to long on off Rizwan Akram. Mars who had feature in a 30 run stand with Amsterdam, whipped Babar over long on to tie up the scores. Babar found some consolation as he had his man bowled for 12, 65/5. Sameet Khawaja struck the winning runs with a double to deep cover, as Kirton remained unbeaten on four. Americas Cricket Academy trotting into the Asia Tribune final with comfortable five-wicket victory. Amsterdam deservedly earned man of the match for his exploits with both bat and ball.

ACA Complete 2KO To Reach Asia Tribune Semis

by Dyon Ravello

On Sunday April 8th 2013, Americas Cricket Academy rallied for two wins at 80th Street Canarsie. ACA met Wanderers in the morning’s first round encounter. Batting first the Academy got off to an aggressive start with openers Rafeez Nazeer and Michael Noble taking 27 runs off the first three overs. Nazeer looking to continue in the same vein struck seamer Francis Mendonza to the boundary, before gifting a simple catch to Mark Audain at point, 32/1 Nazeer 14(12) . Noble was joined by ACA skipper Sean Stanislaus as they added 40 odd for the second wicket partnership. Noble fell caught at the wicket off Andre Hooper for 17, 78/2 after 12 overs.

Stanislaus found an able partner in Andre Kirton as they took took aliking for the Wanderers attack. Stanislaus struck a boundary and a six as he brought up his half century off 53 deliveries. As Stanislaus provided the platform, Kirton cashed in for four sixes and three boundaries, as he remained unbeaten on 47 off 21 deliveries at an astounding strike rate of 223.81. Stanislaus was caught on the long on boundary of Rawle Jackman scoring 59 of 60. Jackman got some consolation as Ravello was stumped off the last delivery. The Academy side closed on 164/4 led by Stanislaus and Kirton. Bowling for Wanderers Jackman had 2/20, Mendonza 1/21, Hooper 1/40, Leon Hyde 0/20, and Mark Audain 0/28.

Andre Kirton sneered 4 wickets and scored an unbeaten 47 off 21 balls to help ACA reach the Asia Tribune semis

In reply Wanderers suffered an early setback as Stanislaus caught Audain off Greg Robinson at midwicket. Robinson continued to make inroads as he had the dangerous Jacob Emmanuel caught at wide long on by Pranshant Nair. Emmanuel disconsolate with his dismissal, walked to the position where he had being caught, disputing whether Nair had taken the caught within the ropes. Andre Hooper failed to bail his side out, as Robinson trapped him leg before playing back. Mendonza seemed to be the last hope, but he fell to Robinson caught Sameet Khawaja at mid off to leave the Wanderers reeling with four wickets down.  Robinson completed his quota of four overs with as many wickets.

Prashant Nair got into the act with his leg breaks as he picked with three wickets to put Wanderers out of their misery. Andre Kirton sneered two scalps as Noble had one wicket. Wanderers 81 all out with 4.5 over unused. ACA completed a convincing 83 run victory to book a quarterfinal place against Brooklyn Knights.

QuarterFinal

Michael Noble took 3/9 and scored 78 off 48 balls, to earn the man of the match as ACA rolled past Brooklyn Knights.

Michael Noble took 3/9 and scored 78 off 48 balls, to earn the man of the match as ACA rolled past Brooklyn Knights.

Following the luncheon interval, ACA returned to contest the Knights in the afternoon’s card. Brooklyn Knights won the toss and elected to bat in the chilling wind bellowing in a Northeasterly direction. Stanislaus, struck with the third delivery as Nabeel was caught by Khawaja at mid off for no score. Amir and Kashif stared off three testing over from Stanislaus and Robinson, to cash in on the last two overs of the mandatory Power Play. Amir stroking three boundaries to Wide Long on to loosen the stranglehold. The pair added 56 (45) runs for the second wicket before Kashif held out to Hugh Craig on the Long on boundary for 27, Nair the bowler 56/2 at 7.5 overs.

Amir was joined by Owais, as they set about laying the foundation for a possible late innings assault. The third wicket partnership yielded 22 off 29 deliveries, which included a maiden over from Noble. Noble broke the stand getting Amir, (32) caught at the wicket, as he attempted run one down to third man. Ryan Sukhdeo effected the dissmissal, Knights 79/3 after 13 overs. Owais (24) took advantage of some looseners from Craig, scoring two boundaries and a six to take 16 off the 14th overs. Only three run came off the 15th overs as Noble continued his pinpoint bowling, stiffling the Knights’ progress 103/3.

The last five overs resulted in 32 runs as six wickets fell at the depth. The Academy bowlers holding off any late innings blitz. Noble was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/1/19/3, Nair had 4/0/21/2, Kirton 4/0/27/2, and Stanislaus 3/0/18/1 were among the wickets.

Set 136 at 6.80 runs per over, ACA kept the opening pair from game one unchanged, with Nazeer and Noble. The pair feared much better than they did against Wanderers. They combine to score 42 during the power play. Nazeer played some deft drive through the covers as Noble found the long on boundary with exquisite timing. Nazeer followed up a square drive for four with a single to bring up the 50 run partnership off 6.5 overs. After the solid start Noble began to play with more freedom, as the Academy looked to take the match away from the Knights. At the other end Nazeer seemed starved due to lack of rotation as he tried to capitalize on a brilliant start. Nazeer 33 (26) lost his way stumped off Nafees, one down for 73 after 10.4 overs.

Nazeer was replaces by Stanislaus who signaled his intent stroking a boundary and a six of Bilal Shahid in the 12th over. The hundred came up after 13.1 overs as Noble pushed on with a boundary and a maximum of his own off Amir to bring up is fifty. Stanislaus 18 (10) suffered the same faith as Nazeer, with similar symptoms, Nafees getting his man stumped, 121/2 in 15 overs. Noble in free flowing fashion punished Shahid with a six over midwicket, and then followed two consecutive boundaries. Shahid had the consolation of Noble’s wicket, caught for 78 (48) at a strike rate of 162.50. Americas Cricket Academy capitalizing on a comprehensive batting display to win by seven wickets, to advance to the semifinals.

Across town, Pak Stallions completed the quarterfinal card as they got the better of K.R. Playing against Punjab; Stallions were on point restricting their opponents to 117 all out. That total proved to be a competitive one as Stallions fell seven runs short. Punjab held their nerve to book a semifinal meeting with the Academy. Challengers scored 114 against Warriors, as 110 seemed to be a dark total on at Marine Park. Warriors like Stallions 110 all out to lose by a mere four runs, to be eliminated. Panthers continued their appetite for runs as the piled up 198/3. Jazba provided a challenge in getting to 171, but still 27 runs in arrears.

Asia Tribune T20 excitement continues on Saturday, April 13th from 10 am with all the action at Marine Park. In game one Panthers play Challengers in a rematch of the 2012 Millat T20 Final. At 2 pm Punjab meet the dark horses Americas Cricket Academy. The Competition ends on Sunday, April 14 with the Grand Finale and presentation ceremony from High Noon, with live commentary on site.

Six Teams Advance, As Panthers KO MMZ

Asia Tribune got on the way Saturday April 7th, with six matches across Brooklyn.  As expected the entertainment was great value for money.
