Sars Fitness Paradigm A Guyanese Jinx
by Dyon Ravello
Guyana’s fortune has dipped of late, coincidentally with Ramnaresh Sarwan’s fitness dilemma. Sarwan has reportedly struggled against fitness starting with the advent of world cup winning coach Otis Gibson. In 2010 Sarwan’s was unable to complete the tour of Sri Lanka before returning for the 2011 World Cup. Following a poor showing at the World Cup. Sarwan criticized Gibson’s tactic with regards to the way he bats.
Chris Gayle supported his fellow teammate stating that the Coach was affecting Sarwan mentally. On return to the Caribbean in 2011 Sarwan featured in two Tests before being dropped. Sars low came later that year when he was not selected for Guyana at the Regional Super-50 tournament. The absence of the talismanic batsman has dented Guyana’s fortunes, across all formats.
In the without former captain, Guyana were able to ride on the successes of middle order batsmen Assad Fudadin and Narsingh Deonarine. Both Deonarine and Fudadin were rewarded with senior team call ups in 2012 as Guyana failed to feature in a top two finish in regional competitions, dating back to January 2011.
Meanwhile Sarwan who continues to feel the cold shoulder of the WICB selections, signed a two year deal with English county Leistershire. Sars excelled with his side this past season even as the Windies’ tour of England was marred by poor batsmanship. Following the end of the county season Sarwan contacted the WICB expressing his commitment to the regional team across all formats.
West Indies, have selected a 15 man touring party to visit Bangladesh, beginning November 3rd with Sarwan not among those listed. Sarwan will have to wait till Caribbean T20 in January 2013 before he can reassure the selectors of his quality and commitment. Surely Guyana should be buoyed by the return of Ronnie with Regional 4-day and Super 50 soon to follow Caribbean T20.

Caribbean Holds Their Nerves Against Maddogs
Caribbean XI continued its preparation to for its Jamaican tour with a 30 over affair against Maddogs. At Greenwich, Connecticut on a beautiful Autumn afternoon, Maddogs, hosted Caribbean who took first strike. Caribbean opened the batting with veteran Mark Audain and West Indies Under-19 batsman John Campbell. Caribbean lost Audain bowled round his legs, with left arm orthodox spinner Anand drawing first blood. Campbell remained resolute as he struck Anand for a six over square leg. Maddogs called on offspinner Ravi Nichani who induced a false stroke from Campbell, holding out to long for 20.
Batting at number four Owen Hienze picked up where the youth international left off as he consolidated the innings. Hienze was caught in two minds as he attempted to carve out his innings. Hienze lost his wicket as he gave into the fans jeers for big shots falling for 25. Lynch picked up the pieces, but Maddogs captain Keith Lawrence struck thrice in as many overs for a miserly five runs. Lynch contributed 23 before his wicket resulted in an end of innings slide. Masa Brown and Dyon Ravello, combine for an unbeaten half-century stand to lift Caribbean to 175 off their allotted 30 over. Brown with a liking for the boundaries scored 37 and Ravello notching 20. Lawrence 3/5 was the pick of the Maddog bowlers, with Anand and Nichani scalping 2/24 each.
Faced with of a touch under six per over to win, Maddogs set to pace their innings early. Audain accounted for the first wicket as new ball partner Ravello struggle for a consistent line. Audain gave Lawrence his first chance spilling his own catch. Ravello got into the act with a leg before appeal of the first delivery of the eighth over. Vindication came three balls later getting his man plumb in front. Ravello buoyed by success seeked to trap Lawrence as he adjusted the offside field. Lawrence rode his luck as Jack failed to hold onto the lofted drive in the covers following Ravello’s precise adjustment.

The skipper looked to consolidated for his side after the pace threat had decipated. Campbell’s off breaks kept the Maddogs in check, eventually striking the third wicket, a leg before decision. Following Campbell’s spell the game seemed to hang in the balance as Caribbean looked to fill in a fifth bowler. Hienze had two overs of leg break, as Peter remained tidy at the other end. With four overs to go Maddogs needed 36, Campbell’s throw found Nichani short of his ground looking for a second. Audain then made amends for his earlier spill as he bowled Lawrence for a dogged 72 to severely dent the Maddog’s chances. Caribbean captain Levine bowling for the first time at the depth bowled Anand and Phil to open up the tail.
Ravello returned for the penultimate over, as Everton attempted to take the attack to Caribbean, with a lofted drive to wide long off. Everton looked to press for a second run, but was Run Out by miles, Campbell with another pinpoint throw. Two deliveries later Neil poach a slow baller to Peter at cover to kill off any chances of a shock Maddog’s win. Last pair John Moore and Thakur survived the remaining nine deliveries preventing their side from being bowled out. Levine leading Caribbean with 2/9 Ravello had 2/25 and Audain 2/26 Caribbean winning by 18 runs.
Caribbean will continue it preparation for its Jamaica tour with two matches this weekend, when the play NY Selects at Bridgeport, and New Britain away.

Only Pride Left To Play For
by Dyon Ravello
As quick as the world cup winners arrived in South Africa, they are on the way out. Even a sublime recovery by Darren Bravo and Denesh Ramdin was not enough to hold off Yorkshire in their must-win qualifier. Ramdin and Bravo post a 94 run stand to help Trinidad and Tobago, recover from 8/3. Ramdin and Kevon Cooper gave the innings the momentum needed at the end to post 148/9.

World Cup T20 Winner Denesh Ramdin played a captain’s knock of 59 to help Trinidad and Tobago recover from 8/3.
Rampaul and Badree struck early to remove Phil Jacques and Alex Gale. Champions League Debutants Rayad Emrit and Yannick Ottley both had a wicket each. But Adil Rashid and Gary Ballance played sensible cricket in an unbeaten stand to qualify the English to Champions League proper. On a day when Trinidad and Tobago looked a bowler or two short, Ballance continued to build his reputation with an unbeaten 63.
Red Force will open the third and final day of the qualifying against Uva Next of Sri Lanka. All four team with only pride to play for as Yorkshire Carnigie and Auckland Aces have completed the main groups. Game two on Thursday will see Hampshire Royals taking on Sialkot Stallions.
A Chance To Blood Talent
For the Caribbean side, there will be much to contemplate, what could have been, missed opportunities and more. As for the players who missed as chance against the Yorkshiremen, they will want to get a taste of the limelight, a chance to showcase their talent on the global stage.
Navin Stewart will be eager to get out to the middle with the many medium pacer all-rounders around, a high commodity in Twenty20 cricket. Sherwin Ganga like Stewart is no newcomer to this stage and he too will like to have a bite with his off breaks and blade too. As for Shannon Gabriel he has showed what he can do on sporting pitches in England last summer. Gabriel may just be the bowler TnT were missing to open up the Yorkshire tail. Evin Lewis a former West Indies youth batsman will be keen to get his name on the team-sheet especially after the three opener flop.
Team Predictor line up against Next: Lendl Simmons, Adrian Barath, Darren Bravo, Denesh Ramdin, Evin Lewis, Kevon Cooper, Navin Stewart, Ravi Rampaul, Rayad Emrit, Shannon Gabriel and Samuel Badree

Team Predictor: TnT Must Win Against Yorkshire
by Dyon Ravello
As the old adage goes “no rest for the wicked!” Wicked cricketers, sure they are, in the colloquial sense of the word. Mere days after a comprehensive win at the World Cup Twenty20, Trindad and Tobago’s players continue the hunt for supremacy. The Red Force will be eager to make a two for two celebrations for the Caribbean. As is the case in Twenty T20 cricket, there is little time for pause. Team TnT enter the first Qualifying match against Yorkshire already in must win situation.

World Cup T20 Winner Denesh Ramdin with the toughest of tasks, filling Ganga’s Shoes and Emulating Sammy Feat.
Yorshire won against UVA Next in game one, pressuring the Trinibagonians right from the start. Already asked to qualify for the main event the 2009 finalist, will need to win at the first a time of asking as was the case in 2011. Denesh Ramdin is leading his country for the first time at the Champions League, and is keen to secure two victories to qualify for the main event. Daren Ganga, Ramdin’s predecessor, has set high standards to follow, but even without the iconic leader, Ramdin will be poised to supercede the feats of Champions League past. Team confidence will be exponential with the World Cup triumph still very fresh.
Even without Sunil, Keiron and Dwayne, Denesh and Co will be buoyed to emulated the feats of another Darren, Sammy that is, in being champions of the world.
Initial objective defeat Yorkshire, then on to Next, Uva Next, predict your eleven for game 1 with Team Predictor:

October 10th 17:30 GMT, 13:30 ECT/EST Trinidad and Tobago and Yorkshire.
