With a round to go in the Zonal phase of the EACA Power 40 competition. Zone I remains the most competitive with three teams in with a chance to at a spot in the top four. Meten-Meer-Zorg (MMZ), Big Apple and Hillside confirmed their positions with victories in the eighth round. The key fixtures of the round saw MMZ disposed of Arsenal, Arsenal 78 all out. Rocky Kowchai and Amarnauth Persaud had three wickets each, as Richie Seiuchan the league’s leading run scorer notched an unbeaten half century to complete the eight wicket victory. Arsenal needed a mere point to affirm a top four finish going into the final round, meaning any result but a defeat would have affirm a favorable finish.

Similarly Long Island United (LIUCC) did Arsenal no favors as they lost to NY Centurion allowing not only Centurion but also Camelot with a chances at a top four finish. This weekend Arsenal will need any result but a lost to oust the challengers. For Centurion and Camelot they need to win and win handsomely to offset any run rate calculations. Despite the current five point cushion, Arsenal host Centurion who have the next best chance at the top of the table finish. Outsiders Camelot will fancy their chances against LIUCC at home. MMZ tackle Big Apple in a top of the table clash as they vie to complete the phase with the only 100 percent record across zones. At the other end Falcons and Phantom will be searching for their first win of the season.

Big Apple v. Meten-Meer-Zorg @ Bay Park
Arsenal v.  Centurion @ Hecksher II
Camelot v.  LIUCC @ Flushing I
Falcons v.  Phantom @ Flushing II

In Zone II Atlantis maintained the pressure on Richmond Hill at the pole position, as they routed Victory for a season low 43 all out. Speedster Casper Davis Jr, and Greg Robinson were in an unforgiving mood with figures of  8-3-17-6 and 7.1-1-19-4 respectively. Henderson Blades scored 23 not out to complete the blow out nine wicket victory over Victory in 4.4 overs.

Richmond Hill put an end to Enmore’s run as Enmore slumped to 112 all out. S Mohammed 42 and L Latchman 22 offered little resistance. Richmond Hill skipper Shameer Sadloo lead his side with 3/23 as Deryck Mc Donald, Sudesh Dhaniram and Ramphal Bactowar had two wickets each. Zaheer Sadloo 43 and Wazid Ward 42 remained unbeated to complete a comfortable eight wicket win by the 19th over.

American Cricket Society (ACS) continued to reassert their dominance as they turned back Liberty. Liberty were restricted to 189/7 with Altaf Habibulla 58 and Imtiaz Hassan 32 with the best batting efforts. Aun Merchant and T Forde has two wicket each alongside the miserly bowling of veteran Zamin Amin with 8-1-20-1 at 2.5 runs per over. Merchant was buoyed by his bowling performances as he lead his side with 88. Dwayne Smith 59 was enough for ACS to complete a five wicket victory with 29 deliveries to spare. Hassan like Merchant, put in an all-round display with 3/45 as Thakur Singh had 2/21.

Galaxy who were dubbed to be challengers this term were able to complete the zonal phase with half a chance at a top four finish. With a great appetite for run Galaxy posted 302/5 against Eastside Warriors, Ryan Girdharry falling one short of a possible second ton this season. T Dhanraj was unbeaten on 57, V Peetam 44 and Sunesh Wazid 38. The Warriors managed 129 in  27.3 overs with Girdharry scalping 4/22 and Rafique Nazeer 2/30. This win couple with Liberty’s defeat mean Liberty must win when they face Eastside to make up the five point gap between them and Galaxy. Even with a win Liberty with have to win by at least 42 runs batting first. Atlantis host ACS in a romped for second, Enmore look to finish strong against Allstars and Richmond Hill look to hold of Atlantis when they host Victory.

Atlanta Women T20 Gaining Global Traction

By Tarika Khattar

Wisden India

I’m not one to question John Arlott, but the gods are changing.

May 27, 2013. Atlanta, Georgia. 12.17am.  Stafanie Taylor leads us off the highway, behind a strip mall and into the Jamaica Jamaica Luxe restaurant/convenient store. Grocery racks packed with plantain chips and sweet bread to one side, three retro diner-style red leather booths to the other. A crooked, signed picture of Usain Bolt hangs above, yellow Soul headphones and all. Some reggae croaks out of an old radio in the kitchen. The store is empty save for a lone man behind the counter. Above him, framed and carefully ordered are pictures of Obama, MLK, Malcolm X, Gandhi and Bob Marley.

A light nod as the eight of us trudge in. We order all three items on the menu— oxtail, goat curry and jerk chicken. They all come with beans and rice. I fall into one of the booths, cramping, hungry and oddly at home.

Altanta t21An unexpected email one March morning from Nadia Gruny, captain of the Atlantis Cricket Club NY women’s team and US national player had rather miraculously brought me to the Atlanta Women’s T20 Tournament. I met them all for the first time yesterday. Shy and childishly nervous, I stood in the corner of manager John Aaron’s room as he handed the kits out, watching in awe as Stafanie Taylor rummaged through the bag for size ‘small’ pants, failing to find them as I clutched the only pair. Then suddenly a leather ball came hurling at me. Panicking, I grabbed it inches from the mirror to my left and they all burst into laughter. Fast bowler Catherine “Joy” Jones winked: “Just to see if you can catch!” And so the ice broke.

In the booth in front of me sits Joan Alexander-Serrano, 52 and radiant, chatting animatedly over some jerk chicken. Aged 16, she arrived in Indira’s India with the West Indies Women’s XI.

“I got hit in India, you know.”

“Like, with a bouncer?” I ask wide-eyed.

“If only,” she smiles recalling an afternoon shopping in a market when she felt a hard punch on her back. She spun around, fist-raised, ready to face her attacker.

“It was a cow!” she laughs. There were so many stories. So much knowledge, so much laughter, so much love for the game.

I opened the batting with Joan just a few hours ago versus the Cayman Islands XI in our second game of the day. It was my first time batting and she could sense my nerves. “You can do this, hun.” She punched my glove. I smiled reassuringly but my insides were melting away. Stafanie gave me some quick throwdowns. “Front foot out. It won’t bounce on the mat. Play straight, always straight. Drive.” Drive, drive, drive on repeat as I took guard. Here it comes. First ball in my first real match. Wide.

Stafanie was acting coach for these games. The organisers felt it would only be fair if she played one game so we were saving her for the final. She didn’t complain. She was just there for the cricket. I could see it in her constant fidgeting with the ball, in being first up to give throwdowns to the next bat and her insistence on acting as twelfth man. She sat at the boundary, water bottles ready in one hand, running up every couple of overs with a drink and a quick observation. Move third man to gully. Bring midwicket in. Play straight. It’s too close to cut. Drive.

There was no pretence of an aura, no air, no flaunting of what was clearly a remarkable knowledge and understanding of the game. Would her male counterparts do the same? Would they just show up to play for a club side in America for no reason other than the fact that they’ve been asked to come play cricket? No contracts, no commercialisation, just cricket.

The fact that the West Indies Cricket Board agreed to let her play, sending her as an ambassador for women’s cricket, points to the steps being taken by various boards like Cricket Australia and the England and Wales Cricket Board to develop the women’s game. Many members of Atlantis like Nadia, Joan and Sara Farooq played for the US in the World Cup qualifiers and experienced cricket at the highest level. But for someone like me, this was a rare opportunity to play with the likes of Taylor. And I was only to truly appreciate that the following morning.

May 27, 2013. 3:04pm. Forest Park, Georgia. There’s no shade so we build our pavilion of deckchairs in the trees. The spectators, mostly from the Caribbean, have flocked to the ground in large numbers knowing Staf is going to play.Dozing in deckchair’s gentle curve, through half-closed eyes [they] watched the cricket. The Lady Eagles post a challenging 123 against our rather strong bowling line-up. Too many extras but now it’s done. Drive, drive, drive.

Two overs in, a harsh runout brings opener Neha Anand back to the shade of our forest pavilion and Joan joins Nadia at the crease. The spectators ease out of their slumbers. The deckchairs sag a little less. Bums are adjusted. Sun hats perch higher. Surely she’ll come in next.

Joan parts the leaves, kicks a branch and joins us. There is a fleeting, involuntary pause, hardly noticeable in the chatter that accompanies a departed batsman. Yet here it is, floating between the trees. There’s no intake of breath, no dramatic applause. Just that pause as we peer through the leaves to watch as Stafanie Taylor takes the field.

Some marvellous shots leave her blade this afternoon. Deckchairs empty, hoots of “You go, girl” echo. Down on one knee. Arms swing back. A whirling wooden blur that materialises into a bat above her left shoulder. Beyond the scorebox, through the trees. Straight drives. Lofted drives. Drives through the covers. 64 off 36 deliveries. Elegant brutality. There’s no other way to describe it.

Game over. 125 for two in just 14.1 overs. Atlantis retains the trophy. Players and spectators flock to her with iPhones and cameras. The photo session goes on for an hour with her still padded up. As I watch her, inevitably tired and thirsty but happily obliging, it strikes me that she is my age. She’s 23 years younger than Lara, 11 years younger than Gayle; she’s even younger than Kohli.  In fact, she just became legal.

A few weeks ago, Raf Nicholson wrote an important piece on the need for girls to recognise women cricketers as role models. It’s certainly true that instead of Mithali Raj my idol has been Sachin Tendulkar. Yet here stands Stafanie Taylor, a model of humility, composure and self-belief. Who wouldn’t aspire to that?

Alan Gibson, translating Horace in a wonderful article on the history of English cricket, wrote: “There were great men before Agamemnon, but the press hadn’t got round to it.” The press is awakening now. The likes of Taylor and Perry and Raj are shaping an evolving game. Women’s cricket is growing. The world has started watching. And slowly but inevitably the gods too are changing.

As we left Jamaica Jamaica Luxe that night, they asked if it’s true I’ll be writing an article on the tournament. Joan gave a big “whoop” and Sara said I better copy the scorecards. Then, Joy armed not with a ball but a question this time, cornered me. “How will you describe us? If you had one word to describe us, what would it be?”

Two days is not an awful lot of time to summarily judge 11 strangers. Yet sometimes it takes just minutes for the truest and most powerful impressions to be made. It rolled off my tongue so easily that I only realised later how cheesy it must have sounded.

“Passionate.”

Fierce midday sun upon the ground;
Through heat haze came the hollow sound
Of wary bat on ball, to pound
The devil out of it, quell its bound.

Baksh the son of former ICC Panel Umpire Mohammed N. Baksh, has officiated at the highest level here in the US, standing in Regional tournaments as well as the famed US Open tournament among others. Baksh continues to work diligently each year through the United States of America Cricket Umpires Association (USACUA) as a tutor at the the organization’s annual in-class umpiring course.

Baksh is another example of the wealth of cricket talent within the USA not only in the players pool but also within the umpiring ranks. This assignments complements the number of US based umpires who have aced the West Indian Cricket Umpires Association’s Exams on a perennial basis.

Richmond Hill, MMZ Remain Unbeaten, As Dhaniram and Baksh Post Tons

EACA Power 40 Sixth Round

Marlon Persaud (l) 4/22 and And Harricharran (r) 98 lead Liberty back to winners row

Marlon Persaud (l) 4/22 and And Harricharran (r) 98 lead Liberty back to winners row

In the match of the week Richmond Hill CC entertained American Cricket Society (ACS or ACS/Everest) at the league’s most popular venue, “The Cage.” Richmond Hill piled on 261/7 with former US National Batsman Sudesh Dhaniram stoking a 78 ball hundred. Imran Alli built off the early momentum to close off the innings in a flurry with 51 from 23 balls. ACS defending double crown champs did no justice to their title defense as Kevin Darlington scalped three wicket alongside the many destroyer Kumar Nandalall who picked up five. ACS all out for 151, to lose their first on the season, to add to points dropped in two rounds where play was not possible. Richmond Hill’s 110 run victory evening up their record with ACS to 2-2 oover the last two seasons, to remain unbeaten this term.

Liberty SC returned to winning ways with a win over Allstars. In what should have been a straightforward victory, the Blue Nation were made to work for the spoils. Andy Harricharran continued his rich vein off form falling two runs short of his hundred. Terrence Madramootoo contributed 36 as Liberty posted a competitive 197 all out in 37.4 overs. S Ahmed 4/20, J Hussain 2/32, and Dhaval Patel had the best efforts with the ball for Allstars. Allstars batted a bal more than Libery did, but their run rate was closer to four per over rather than Liberty’s near five. Allstars had cameo’s from Hussain 39, R Kellawan 36, Z baig 21 and R Faruque 20. Thakur Singh started the top order slide with 3/35 with Marlon Persaud finishing off the middle and lower order with 4/22. Allstars 159 all out felling short by 38 runs. Liberty’s win couple with ACS’ loss, saw the Blue Nation move into third, with the perennial giants slipping to fourth ACS poorest start for in a decade.

At the picturesque Lido Beach, Atlantis and Galaxy lost 10 overs due to inclement weather. Batting first the Atlantis posted 187 allout with Alex Amsterdam 38,  Ron Andrews 35 and Kaveshwar Bridgpaul 32 all getting starts. A Rambharack 3/23 and Ryan Girdharry 3/43 maintained a procession from the middle to the dug out for Galaxy. Galaxy who were dubbed to be challengers to the EACA establishment of yesteryear, failed yet again to live up to the preseason bill. Galaxy were restricted by some miserly bowling from Casper Davis Jr 6-2-12-1 and Alex Amsterdam 6-0-13-2. Girdharry continued to be Galaxy’s swansong topscoring with 47 alongside captain Sunesh Wazid with 22. Greg Robinson 2/17  and Prashant Nair 3/27 completed the 54 run victory as Galaxy could only manage 133 with eight delivery to spare. In Zone II other encounter Eastside Warriors chalked up their second win on the season surpassing their 2012 returns.

In Zone II MMZ kept pace with Zone I leader Richmond Hill to be to only clubs yet to be beaten. MMZ scored an imposing 245/2 against Falcons. Deonauth Baksh became the third centurions for his side this term with an unbeaten 105. Richie Sieuchan maintained poll position on the batting tables stroke a half-century (55). Falcons made a match of the total similar to their last meeting. Zulfiqar Alli (45) lead the challenge with cameos from S Deopal 28, and the Shamsundar brothers of  Komal and Mark with 25 and 24 respectively. For MMZ the wickets with distribute with skipper Azurdeen Mohammed leading with an economical display of 8-3-13-2. Siechan had 2/43 and Saumil Gandhi 2/48 to give their side a 26 run victory as Falcon posted 219.

Big Apple rebounded from the shock of the season against Centurion, to inflict Hillside’s second consecutive defeat. Zaheer Saffie lead his side with 57, with Andre Kirton 35, Telston Johnson 23 and Romeno Dean 20, as Big Apple posted 211/9. Zamal Khan was the pick of the bowlers for Hillside with 3/47, Latch, Lalisa and Roopnarine had a wicket each. The sixth round turned out to be one of the more competitive weekends in the EACA as Hillside fancied their chances in chasing 212. N Basdeo 47 and Captain Khan 39 were the main scorers. The day did not belong to Hillside as Kirton’s (8-0-14-3) precise slow left arm bowling setting back the opposition early up. Shiv Raghubir 2/23 stemmed the run flow through the middle of the innings as Hillside closed on 185/9 to lose by 26 runs.

Closing on the weekend Camelot and Arsenal continued their winning ways, to open up a four way tight for second on points. Big Apple, Arsenal, Hillside and Camelot all locked on 17 points.

Yusuf, Mars Ease Melbourne NY Alliance Past Somerset

by Dyon Ravello

Zafar put in a match winning performance with figures of 8-0-23-4 and 35 with the bat

Zafar put in a match winning performance with figures of 8-0-23-4 and 35 with the bat

Staring down the tunnel following three consecutive losses Melbourne NY Alliance (MNYA) needed to turn back Somerset. Dubbed as the return fixture from a fortnight ago the stage was set at Canarsie Oval, arguably the best cricket ground in the city. Upon winning the toss Melbourne’s captain Troy Mars invited Somerset to take first strike. With seven consecutive weeks of torrential rains the conditions offered moisture to the seam bowlers. Carlos Bachu with his left medium fast continuously wrapped the pads of the openers with little bat coming into play. Even with a leg before decision seeming imminent, the initial dismissal came via the run out route, as Bachu wrapped the pads yet again with the ball rolling out to backward point with Roopnarine combining with Mars to find the prodding batsmen out of his crease.

Initially runs were hard to come  as Bachu picked up his scalp with Somerset Skipper Brian Cumebatch plumb in front. P Harris and J Rowe set about the repair job cashing in on some loose bowling by the change bowlers. A threatening third wicket partnership was cut short as Rowe (22) lobbed a short delivery from Ravello, with Bachu completing a single-handed leap at mid off to complete the dismissal. Harris took advantage of any short bowling from the medium pacers. Mars introduced spin to good effect as the twin of Rahimullah Shakoor and Zafar Yusuf dried up the runs in tandem. Yusuf was the more incisive of the pair as he maintained a procession from the middle to the bleachers, as he struck Harris (39) in front. Stefan Rampersaud took advantage of a mix-up between the sixth wicket pair to complete a run out with a direct hit from short mid wicket. Down the order Roger Larrier played cameo of 23 to stave a complete collapse. Again it was Yusuf with the final say as Larrier (23) drove, edging to slip where Shakoor completed a regulation catch. Somerset posted 152 in 33 overs, with Yusuf as the main destroyer with 8-0-23-4 he was supported by Bachu, Ravello, Shakoor and De Freitas with a wicket each.

Troy Mars played a skippers knock 68*, to take is aggregate to 346 runs on the season, averaging 88.5

Troy Mars played a skipper’s knock 68*, to take his aggregate to 346 runs on the season, averaging 86.5

Like Somerset Melbourne NY Alliance were slow in their approach with Shakoor and Yusuf partners at the top of the order as well. Shakoor (14) was the first to go, caught at backward point to a leading edge, Darrell Evelyn the bowler. Anthony Harewood scored two before Evelyn found his edge with Harris completing the catch at slip. In a bold move Bachu was promoted up the order combine with Yusuf for another fruitful partner which saw Melbourne Alliance to 51/1 after 15 overs. Bachu had done enough to improve his batting record before C Small had his man to a successful leg before decision. Yusuf continued to rotate the strike as he found his captain Mars as a capable partner.  Mars curbed his inhibition, relying less lusting hitting as Melbourne closed in on the score at 100. Yusuf (35) played solidly throughout his innings, until he began to attempt cross batted strokes. Playing across the line to Larrier, Yusuf had no reprieve this time to be dismissed leg before. Next in was De Freitas, struck in front of a golden duck, 100/5.

The match had now shaped to be Melbourne’s to lose rather than Somerset’s to win with the equation at 51 runs needed in 15 overs. Ravello joined Mars, as the pair mixed solid defense with quick running between the wickets to drive home the momentum. Mars added insult to injury as he whipped Larrier for two sixes over the mid wicket boundary. Ravello was no bystander as he took 7 off an over himself and even injured Evelyn who failed to hold on to a return catch as he was struck where it hurts the most. Evelyn completed his seventh over, but in grim-macing in pain he left the field to a nurse his wound. Larrier return for a tight over before Mars took apart Small with 15 runs coming in what was the final over. Melbourne Alliance completing the equalizer against Somerset with a comfortable five wicket victory. Mars unbeaten on 68 and Ravello still standing on 12, the win coming with 42 balls to spare. Evelyn 2/24 and Larrier 2/25 were the best efforts with the ball for Somerset.

Melbourne will look to build a momentum going into next weeks double header against MVP and Punjab both at Baisley Pond Cricket Park. Somerset will be off this coming weekend and resume play against Challengers on June 29th in the Mark Clarke Knockout Trophy.
