Olympic gold Bolt open to playing in BBL

From Espncricinfo:

Olympic Gold Usain Bolts in action off the track with the bat, AP photo

Usain Bolt has spoken of his desire to play in the Big Bash League this year, and the Melbourne Stars are keeping the door open to potentially sign him. The possibility was first raised in June when Bolt was interviewed on Australian TV by Eddie McGuire, a presenter who is also the Stars president, and the team’s marquee player Shane Warne has also asked Bolt whether he was interested.

Fresh from an Olympic campaign in which he won three gold medals, Bolt said at the weekend he was still open to the idea. “He [Shane Warne] contacted me and asked me about if I am serious and if I really want to do it then he can put in a few words that should get it done,” Bolt said on Channel Nine.

“So we will see if I get the time off. I will try. Twenty20, I love it. Just the fact that it is so exciting, it’s about going hard the whole time, not just about playing shots. It’s about being aggressive and I like that style of batsman. If I get the chance I will definitely try because I know it’s going to be a lot of fun. I don’t know how good I am. I will probably have to get a lot of practice in.”

One of the major issues would be whether Bolt could hold his own as a cricketer. Although he played junior cricket and famously bowled Chris Gayle in a charity match in Jamaica in 2009, facing the likes of Brett Lee and Pat Cummins would be another matter entirely.

In 2006-07, the rugby league star Andrew Johns turned out in two Big Bash matches for New South Wales in an effort to boost crowd numbers and attention for the competition, but the move backfired for the Blues. On debut, Johns batted at No.11 and was at the crease when New South Wales needed 13 from the final over to win, but his partner Simon Katich refused to put him on strike and the Blues lost.

The stakes have risen considerably since then, with the eight BBL franchises all competing not only for the trophy but also for two spots at the Champions League T20, where the winning team earns $2.5 million in prize money. Cricket Australia is cautious about the idea of Bolt playing in the BBL, declaring that the competition has moved past the “novelty factor” and that he would need to be able to play to the appropriate standard, but the Stars remain keen on the idea.

“We’re going to wait until the Olympics is over and re-engage with him and his management company,” Clint Cooper, the Stars CEO told the Sydney Morning Herald. “We’ve got a couple of spots left on our list.”

Sheffield Dent Panthers To Stay Alive

by Dyon Ravello,

Brooklyn Cricket League is never short of twist and turns, excitement and surprises. On Sunday 5th August play continued with Middlesex failing to show against Diplomats due to an internal dispute, give Diplomats only there third victory of the term. Middlesex marred by an internal dispute, which led to a player strike being unable to field a team against Diplomats. Middlesex has seem to rectified the issues by healing the wound or even reaching into the reserves to be ready for this weekend double header against Sheffield. Middlesex meet Sheffield twice on the weekend with these encounters granted to shape the season for either side.

Queensbury scored  220 as they sort about to resolve their record low of 24 against Wanderers. Queensbury were led by Kenneth Charles 52, Marcellin Stanford 33 and Elsworth Harper 27. Wanderers were unable to repeat there superfluous feat of two weeks prior, with bowling returns for L. Hyde 3/36 W. Celestine 3/49 and K. Wade 2/10. Needing an imposing 5.5 runs per over Wanderers would have much preferred to chase double digits. Only Wanderers Captain Roy Jackman with 54 showed any grit as Wanderers failed to even compete with a paltry total of 118 all out. Queensbury with a grand sigh of relief as Joseph Shorte 3/38 and Roy Cesar  4/20 combined to complete a convincing 102 run victory to leave Wanderers rooted at the bottom of the table.

Travel Treat maintain touching distance with Panthers at the top after winning by 45 runs over Imperial. Travel Treat scored 250 runs batting first with Imperial only managing 205. The result confirms Travel Treat’s place in the semifinals,  as Imperial’s aspirations have been retarded slightly. Travel Treat will look to finish strong in their final league encounter when they play lowly Diplomats on Sunday, August 12th. Imperial will be looking to rebound when the tackle Cavaliers on August 11th in a 20 pointer.

Sheffield made the biggest news in Brooklyn on the day as Panthers proved dull losing their first this season. Panthers slumped to 148 with only the rampant “Blade Da” Shahzad scoring 34, as M. Patel made key breakthroughs for returns of 4/23.  Tails up sensing an opportunity to pounce on a much need victory, Sheffield led by Trevor Wittick 32 and Zain  Masood 37 not out, were not about to botch this one, completing a comfortable five wicket victory. Sheffield who have struggled all season, creating the biggest headline of the season rocking the league leaders.

Cavaliers were inactive last weekend, but are very much in with a chance to make the playoff, as they play Imperial, and the potentially dangerous Wanderers. Cavaliers close out the season with another 20 pointer against Middlesex on August 25th. Imperial face the wounded Panthers on the 12th, needing nothing but a win, but the leaders will be looking to return to their form following the Sheffield shock. Imperial will face Diplomats on the 25th as well. As for Diplomats, Queensbury, and Wanderers they will continue to play for pride and attempt to pull off an upset or two against the boys at the business end of the table. Matches this weekend:

New York Cricket Academy Labor Day Weekend Sixes comes to Brooklyn, New York

The New York Cricket Academy cordially invites teams interested in participating in a six-a-side tournament scheduled for Sunday, September 2nd @ Marine Park in Brooklyn, NY.  A maximum of seven (7) players per team are allowed to register before Saturday, August 25th.  Please email questions and concerns to vellocricket@hotmail.com or newyorkcricketacademy@yahoo.com.

An entry fee is required and a monetary prize award is expected based on the number of participants.  Our goal is to accommodate eight (16) teams in which the tournament would be played on a knock-out format.

The tournament is made for excitement with rules and a venue that encourage aggressive batting and high scoring.  Because every player (except the wicket-keeper) is required to bowl one over, the format suits all-rounder’s.

Match Rules
• Matches are played between two teams of six players, and each game consists of a maximum of five six-ball overs bowled by each side (eight-ball overs in the final match.)
• Each member of the fielding side bowls one over, with the exception of the wicket-keeper.  Teams are NOT ALLOWED to switch wicket-keepers during the match.
• Wides and no-ball count as two runs.
• If five wickets fall before 5 overs are completed, the last remaining batsman bats on with the fifth batsman acting as a runner. He always takes strike. The innings is complete when the sixth wicket falls.
• Batsmen retire not out on reaching 31 runs. The idea being to reach 36 runs by hitting 6 sixes. A retired batsman can return to the crease after lower-order batsmen either retire or are out.

METEN-MEER-ZORG ALL ROUNDER AMARNAUTH PERSAUD PERFORMANCE SINKS HILLSIDE

In glorious sunshine with heavy winds transcending from the ocean across the picturesque Bay Park, Meten-Meer-Zorg Cricket Club won the toss and elected to bat playing without the aggressive Trevis Ross who was in Canada representing the US Under -17 team as their captain. Skipper Azurdeen Mohammed and Ken Nadkumar opening the batting for the MMZ boys as Syed Allie and Altaf Habibulla took the attack for Hillside. Mohammed was cautious at first sighting very good bowling from Allie who was taking full advantage of the strong winds to help is out swing bowling.  The US batsman Mohammed was batting well alongside his faithful partner Nandkumar as the pair put on a solid 75 run stand before Nandkumar was caught on the long off boundary by Awaz Hasildar for a well played 35 which includes six fours and one six, his dismissal brought “MR DEPENDABLE” Deonauth Baksh to the crease to take up strike with his skipper.

Amarnauth Persaud scored 72 and took 3/10 to turn back Hillside, not even injury could keep him at bay.

Mohammed looks set for a big inning, hitting the bad balls to the boundary and picking up the singles and doubles as MMZ hundred came up in the 14 overs. Mohammed looking to carry on, swept at a wide delivery from Colin Sandy that pitched wide outside the leg stump, and was adjudged LBW for a well played 41 which included four fours and a huge six.  In came the USA Under-19 batsman Amarnath Persaud who made an impressive 96 against the Atlantic Region in an Under-18 game the day before to joined Baksh. Persaud and Baksh were batting very well when Baksh got a wide ball down the leg side, flicked with brilliantly caught by  wicket keeper  Ogle diving to his left.  Persaud was joined by Saud Hussain and the pair batted well to bring up 150/3 in the 23rd over, Persaud displayed some glorious stroke play that sparked the MMZ spectators off their feet in jubilation. Persaud  brought up his outstanding half century with a spanking cover drive for four which was deemed “the shot of the day”.  It was the 19 year old Wazim Shaw who was introduced to the attack in the 30th over to put a check on the MMZ scoring, picking up 4 for 24 in 5 overs. Amarnauth was caught on the boundary for a well played 72, Hussain was bowled by Shaw for 10. It was some good batting by all rounders Rocky Kowchai and Himendra Ramdihall at the bottom saw MMZ to a decent score of 246 at the end of their 40 overs.

Hillside started off their innings with the aggressive pair of Aleem Khan and Harry Heeralall coupled with MMZ ‘s Rocky Kowchai  and Rayhanul Islam as usual new ball pair for MMZ.   Islam bowling against the wind snatched the wicket of Heeralall caught by wicketkeeper Ajaz Asgarally for 6.   Kowchai bowling with aggression with the gusty wind behind him got a delivery to lift off a good length and unfortunately struck Khan on the nose sadly causing the batsman to retire hurt with the score on 45. R.Ogle was batting well hitting some lofty blows with his score marching on to 66, in his urgency to hit Amarnauth Persaud for another six, but was brilliantly caught by Saud Hussain on the long on boundary that sent him walking back to the benches. In the flowing momentum of the game Persaud struck  yet again in the same over as he had Syed Allie caught by Majeed at deep backward square for 14.  The next ball had Shameer Rahim caught at short mid wicket for a duck, to leave Hillside reeling.

Hillside trying to secure a spot in the semi final of the  Division 1 needed a vital win in this match to give their team a good chance to remain in contention for the semi finals.  At the Fall of Rahim’s wicket they decided to send Aleem Khan to the crease in order to give them some hope in securing some valuable points.  Khan in his aggressive manner batted well even though facing some discomfort, playing some fantastic shots all over the  Park.  With the scorecard reading 175 Khan flicked Persaud to short mid wicket into the eager hands of Kieth Mungalsingh who grasped the chance.  At that juncture it was the continuation of another sad moment for both teams being faced with an untimely mishap. Khan drove a well pitched up delivery from Persaud and the ball bounced off a nail from the matting and struck Persaud in the head causing him to leave the field and be rushed to Nassau Community Hospital in agony. The entire hillside team showed remarkable compassion rushed out to the middle to lend their support for Persaud who was in severe pain.  After the undue delay play resumed with skipper Mohammed and Ramdihall bowling well, as the pair tighten the screws on the Hilliside’s batsmen to see them finishing on 210 for 9 off their 40 overs. MMZ drawing level on points with leaders Everest. Bowling for MMZ , R.Islam 8-0-32-1, R.Kowchai  7-1-28-1, A.Persaud  3-0-10-3, Z.Majeed  4-0-30-1, H.Ramdihall  8-0-44-3, A.Mohammed  8-0-25-0 .

Final score in the match: MMZ 246 all out off 40 overs. Hillside 210 for 9 off 40 overs.

Meten-Meer-Zorg now on 50 points having won 10 and lost 2 games. They take on the strong Richmond Hill Cricket Club at Baisley Cage this Sunday. Richmond Hill having strengthened up their team with former West Indies fast bowler Brandon Bess and a few other Guyana First Class players is hoping to make it in the final four, with the competition well alive with five teams vying for the top four spots. This game will no doubt be an interesting contest, Richmond Hill is on 43 points with two games remaining.

The MMZ team would like to thank Mr Juman and the entire Hillside cricket team and the President of the EACA Mr. Rudy Persaud for their support and best wishes for Amarnauth Persaud prevailing against all odds. Update on Amarnath Persaud is that all test came back negative thankfully, and remains fit to play this weekend against Richmond Hill.
