MMZ Push Liberty To The Brink In EACA

By Danesh Deonarain

Liberty Sports Club sporting a restructured outfit, fell by 69 runs to Meten-Meer-Zorg in their EACA Division A Round Robin fixture at Flushing Park on July 29th. MMZ won the toss and took first strike but LSC would make immediate inroads in the batting line up. Imtiaz Hassan had Amarnauth Persaud (8) caught and Thakur Singh followed with the prize wicket of USA national batsman Andy Mohammed (25) shortly after to leave MMZ at 40 for 2.

The in form pair of Travis Ross and Deonath Baksh threatened to once again putting together a huge partnership

Swing bowler Rayhanul Islam scalped 4/25

for MMZ, but Thakur would strike another crucial blow to remove Ross for 17. Andy Harrichand came into the attack and announced himself by clean bowling Baksh (28) then trapping Saud Hussain (5) leg before. Ramratan Jagnarine picked up Ken Nandakumar (3) caught by Thakur at long on to leave MMZ in some trouble at 6 for 106 after 20 overs.

Zaieed Majid (45) and veteran Ajaz Aasgarally (27) staged a resilient 79 runs partnership to pull MMZ back into the game. The pair struck the ball with ease as the LSC bowlers toiled for 13 overs before being able to separate the pair. Majid was bowled by Harrichand in the 33rd over and this triggered a collapse of the final three wickets at the close MMZ 205 all out in 36.5 overs. Bowling for Liberty Harrichand picked up 3 for 42 while Hassan, Thakur Singh and Vidour Singh picked up 2 wickets each.

The fairly depleted LSC batting line up in their reply to what would ordinarily be a pedestrian chase never posed any great threat to MMZ. Openers Bose Persaud (3) and Harrichand (5) fell early. Danesh Deonarain and Imtiaz Hassan staged a fighting partnership to boost the score to 75 for 3 before Deonarain fell for 20.  Hassan continued on but kept on losing partners after which he finally held out to mid-on for 35.

Later in the order Jay Singh chipped in with a run a ball 25 and Vidour made 11 to be the only batsmen to score double figures for LSC. Liberty only managed 135 all out in the 39th over in reply to MMZ. Bowling for MMZ, medium pacer, Rayhanul Islam picked up 4 for 25 while Ross and Amarnauth picked up 2 wickets each. The loss for LSC, the 4th consecutive for the team, has effectively brought an end to their hopes of qualifying for the semi-final stage of the EACA Power 40 competition with 3 games left.

MMZ’s win, on the other hand, keeps them in good standing as they vie for one of the 4 top spots in the EACA Division A Power40 playoffs. In next week’s play LSC will take on Big Apple at Brentwood while MMZ will face off against Hillside Sports Club at Bay Park.

Victory 350 too much for Phantom

By Dyon Ravello

At Hecksher Victory took first strike against Phantoms, with left arm seamer Shaun Merchant striking three early wickets to rock the Victory top order. Mandeep and Nipun combined with an aggressive 200 plus partnership to leave Phantom winded. Nipun fell fifteen runs short for his hundred allowing Kabir to come to the crease to finish with a let innings cameo sc0ring 46. Mandeep measured his course as he remained unbeaten on 113 to lead his side to 350/6.

Phantoms needing 8.75 runs per over were cautious in their approach as they got to 59/3 after 16 overs. The fall of opener Atif Bhaig signaled the end of the resistance as only Asif Kiani played any semblance of a innings against the Victory attack. Victory captain Rohit Kwatra who fell early when his side batted took the opportunity to scalp four wickets. Off Break bowler Gary finished off the tail with three wickets as the Phantoms were foiled for 100 to lose by 250 runs and still in search of their first win on the season.

Camelot chase down 205 to top Arsenal. Arsenal losing for the first time in Division B play. At Brentwood, Falcons and All Stars were inactive due to the unavailability of umpires at the location. There has been a shortage of umpires for a few weeks with numerous matches being played with a solitary umpires instead of two officials.

Wanderer sink Queensbury, As Jazeeb’s Ton leads Travel Treat

By Dyon Ravello

Wanderers shocked Queensbury by bowling out the cellar side for 24 . Wanderers completed a nine win as Queensbury recorded a Brooklyn Cricket League low. Panthers continued their winning ways with two wins over Cavaliers and Middlesex respectively. Panthers scored 227/7 on the back of 63 by all rounder Salman Ahmed. Cavaliers fell short scoring 185 with only former National batsman Albert Texiera showing any resistance with 61.

Panthers again piled on the runs on Sunday scoring 233/9 in 33 overs against Middlesex. Shahzad with his usual “Gayle-Pollard” like stroke play to top score with 66 for the league leaders. Former American youth pacer Dominic Audain led the attack with 4/25. Middlesex were bowled for 203 to lose by 30 runs with 15 balls to spare. Former Sheffield all rounder Hugo D’oliviera played a cameo for 46,  N. Adil 4/16 with his left arm fast medium bowling took the wind out of the sails for Middlesex.

Diplomats scored 171 with Sheffield returning to winning ways after two embarrassing defeats, to complete an eight wicket win as Glen Hall scored his third hundred of the season. Middlesex despite their defeat to Panthers on Sunday got the better of resurgent Imperial. Middlesex 228/5 with Mark Audain 51 and Andre Kirton 40. Imperial scored a paltry 68 in reply as M. Audain and Kirton both completed all round performance with figures of 4/13 and 3/ 16 respectively.

In other matches on Sunday, Imperial rebounded to defeat Queensbury by five wickets. Queensbury fearing much better scoring 160 with Imperial getting to 163/5. Cavaliers brought Wanderers back down to earth as they scored 141. Wanderers made a hash of  a relatively low score as they could only muster 101 to lose by 40 runs, far from their record breaking performance a day earlier.

Jazeeb Tariq’s Ton

Jazeeb Tariq scored his first century in Brooklyn League

Sheffields looking to consolidate Saturday’s victory with another against Travel Treat were upstaged as NYPD all rounder, Jazeeb Tariq scored his first hundred. Travel Treat batting first had openers J. Tariq and captain Junaid  Mirza amass 145 for the first wicket. Mirza scoring 64 and Jazeeb with 110. Jazeeb with his effervescent talent continuously on display at the youth level, paying great dividend in open play. Travel Treat setting Sheffield a target of 258 to win. I was always going to be a daunting proposition as Sheffield fell 30 runs short.

Panthers are certain of a place in the BCL semifinals with Travel Treat and Middlesex in promising positions. The battle seems likely to go to the final round with Imperial, Sheffield and Cavaliers having all to play for. Rooted are Diplomats, Wanderers and Queensbury who will continue to play for pride and could even pull off some spoilers, apart from looking forward to 35 over and T20 knockout play.

MMZ Top LIUCC by Three Wickets In EACA

by Dyon Ravello

Meten Merg Zorg traveled to Brentwood where they meet home side Long Island United. LIUCC won the toss and elected to take first strike. Seamer Rocky Kowchai was on the ball early as he removed both openers, Sajeed Khan caught at mid wicket and U Ali bowled. Kowchai would go on to complete an effective and economical spell as he cramped the opponents finishing with figures of 8-1-26-2. Rahynul Islam  sharing the new ball with Kowchai took care of the dangerous Waqas Shah. At the other end Asim Khan (33) played his shotsto keep his side in the match as he lost Anwer Khan run out. Qasim Dastgir (29) played in the same vein as Asim, as Asim was the fifth man out leg before to Hemendra Ramdhiall. Selwyn Mohan built a partnership with Dastgir, but the Dastgir was coaxed by a flighted delivery from Azurdeen Mohammed to be caught at point. There was no late innings flourish for United as Islam returned to finish with 2/30 and off spinner Travis Ross cleaned up the tail with 2/5, LIUCC 174 all out in 38.1 overs.

Travis Ross scored 65 to lead MMZ over LIUCC

Mohammed started aggressively for MMZ taking the attack to the LIUCC attack. Fellow opener Ken Nandkumar started quietly by was not allowed to play his game as Anwer Khan found a gap breaching the gate to bowl Nandkumar. Anwer followed up with the wicket of Deonath Baksh leg before first ball. Things began to look precarious when national batsman Mohammed was leg before to Dastgir for 17. Ross was joined by anchorman Saud Hussain as the pair set about the repair work. Ross pouncing on the bowling to pick up the boundaries as well as some quick running between the wickets to take advantage of the singles. At the drinks break MMZ 109 from 15 overs, needing another 66 from 25 over at just 2.64 runs per over.

Hussain was undone by one that popped from LIUCC captain Istihaque Khan, caught at cover. Ross up the ante as he was joined by national under 19 batsman Amarnauth Persaud. The pair continued the quick running between the wickets putting pressure on the LIU fielders. Ross’ appetite for grand stroke play saw him raise his half century as his side closed in on the target. Both Ross and Persaud both fell caught with less than 20 runs needed. As if that was not sufficient MMZ wicketkeeper batsman Ajaz Asgarally was leg before to Istihaque. Kowchai and Ramdhiall ensured that a win would be recorded as MMZ completed the victory in 22.1 overs. Anwer 2/34 and Istihaque 3/21 the only bowlers to causing any concern for the MMZ line up as Travis Ross completed an all-round match winning performance. Ross with travel to Canada as captain of a select under 17 team to participate in an invitational tournament.

In Other EACA matches

Allstar were easy victors for the second week in row as East Side Warriors failed to show. Arsenal scored 300 plus at they grind Enmore to there third defeat in Division B play. Atlantis and Big Apple were rescheduled due to Atlantis’ travels to Guyana. Hillside lost to ACS/Everest as Everest look to avoid another flop when they lost to Big Apple two weeks ago. See points table below after two rounds for divisional play.
